I left a pair of GIA certified diamond earrings at 14 Karats to have them reset for my daughter's wedding, which was just 6 weeks off. When I called the next week, the owner (John) said he couldn't find them but was looking and would call me. i had to call him repeatedly for information. After several weeks, he said he had no insurance (!) and tried to replace them with a pair of non-GIA certified stones, which I declined to accept. At that point, now just a few weeks before my daughter's wedding, he refused to compensate me for the earrings so I could shop for another pair. At that point I filed a claim with my own insurance company, who quickly paid me several thousand dollars more than I requested of the shop owner, and then sued him. Months later, after he was sued, he "found" the original earrings. Those acting for the insurance company were of the opinion that his behavior was sleazy and suspicious. I share that opinion.
