First thing's first. Don't come here expecting to find crayons, mac n' cheese, or hayseed stereotypes. That's not southern. This is real, fresh-cooked southern comfort food without all the nonsense. Granted, the place is a bit of a dichotomy: the garden and pop and folk art make it seem kid-friendly at first glance, but youre really better off leaving the kids at home (as they suggest on the menu). Also, its a tad pricy (for gargantuan portions) and they dont take plastic, so bring cash.
The chicken is fried to order. Coated with honey and cracked black pepper, its usually stellar. Pot roast has been terrible of late. I usually opt for the fishes, meatloaf, or potpie. Serious sides include FRESH applesauce, honest-to-goodness broccoli casserole, and collards. For dessert the monstrous slabs of fresh pie get the headlines, and rightfully so, but dont overlook the luscious ice cream made onsite.
Pros: Real southern cooking, Funky atmosphere, Monster portions
Cons: , Wait at peak times, Odd hours
