The best food I've ever had... 6/21/2007

Honestly, both my husband and I hands down agree this is the best food we've ever had. It's small, and a bit cramped, but the food is worth it. Absolutely delicious. more

Great Little Place! 6/21/2007

This was a nice find. I went here on my year anniversary and it was great. The service was excellent and the staff was super friendly! Pros: Great food Cons: Small Place more

The best Piggy Fix! 4/28/2007

We went to Little Owl late Saturday night. It's very charming and romantic. The service was amazing. The meatball sliders were phenomenal.! The scallop appetizer arrived on a hearts of palm citrus salad. While the scallops were delicious, it would have worked better on a different base. It was nice of the waitress to bring it to us on 2 separate plates. We shared the MASSIVE pork chop. It is probably the best thing that's ever been done to a pork chop. Absolutely delicious. We wanted to try the warm chocolate cake with espresso ice cream but they had just run out (it was past midnight) and our server very graciously brought us a trio of gelato on the house. It was fantastic. We loved the restaurant, fabulous service, and even if it had sucked, I'd still go back for those addictive sliders! Pros: fabulos food Cons: tiny space, hard to get a reservation more

Very nice, but room for improvement 2/27/2007

I really like this place, but there is room for improvement. Pros: a few select dishes are amazing, casual but elegant Cons: too crowded, service is spotty, brunch overpriced more

Worth the Wait! 2/8/2007

I recently went to the Little Owl for the third time, and as the saying goes, ""third times a charm!"" and was it ever! Beginning with the moment I walked into the front door, the host greeted me like he had known me forever. He took our coats (like he does every time) and warmly welcomed us in. The tiny place was already fully seated when we arrived but he assured me that we would be the next party seated. He then proceeded to take a moment to chat us up actually saying that he remembered meeting me before and then offering to get us some drinks at the bar. True to his word we were seated shortly thereafter. Once we were seated we were promptly met by our server whose name has currently left my mind, but I can say that she was very knowledgeable about the menu and always on top of updating our silverware, wiping our table of crumbs, and making sure that we never went thirsty. Now for the meal!! If I had to use only 3 words to describe the past 3 visits worth of food, they would be: TO DIE FOR. The food is seriously hands down delicious. Thus far, I have tried a number of different items but for the sake of the pattern I have going on, I will stick with my top 3. Appetizer: the duck over arugala with sliced almonds. This is seriously the last place I will ever eat duck again and I have ordered this as my appetizer every single time, (letting my friends do the experimenting with the other apps!) Entree: lamb shank=HUGE, juicy, and delicious, what more could you want? Dessert: the pear crisp with a gelato that is indescribable in both words and in taste!!! Overall, I had, yet again, a most amazing experience at the Little Owl. The atmosphere is always elegant yet cozy and welcoming with great background music. The chef is genius, service is impeccable, host that truly welcomes you to his home. Go as fast as you can but when you get there, remember, it's well worth the wait! Pros: food, atmosphere, service more

Lame Lame Lame!! 2/6/2007

The host GABRIEL is smug and obnoxious. While the scene is quaint and cozy, i found the host to be condescending and rude. His smarmy demeanor throughout our meal was unpleasant and distracting. While the food was decent, i wouldn't never return due to the pretentious treatment at the door. more

Very good 2/3/2007

Went there w/my in-laws an husband. My in-laws have been a bunch of times and have always loved it. Must admit, we were not disappointed. The bibb lettuce salad w/beets and sunflower seeds was fresh, nutty and excellent. And the cod w/the celery root was buttery, perfectly cooked and very tasty. My husband had the crispy chicken and the in-laws had the pork chop. Everyone was very happy. Pros: All food - incl. dessert, v. good service Cons: Bathroom is small and cold, but that's a small quibble more

I had a great dinner at little O. I sat by miself at the bar, Pros: a true small ny restaurant experience with a pro in the kitchen Cons: bumps and clutter....ohhhh no cons more

LOVED IT 1/21/2007

What a little gem. The service was terrific, the food delish, and presentation very appealing, the atmosphere very comfortable and well thought out. A little cramped though. The restaurant is very small with very few tables. But, I think that helps every dish get the extra attention it deserves. The chef doesn't look stressed out, in fact, I caught him boogying to a little music in the open kitchen. Glad to see he's enjoying himself. As for the food, I had the crabcake (yum), crispy chicken (better than anything I could ever make at home) and brussel sprouts (so so so good). My husband had the meatball sliders (so recommended...every bite is great) and the pork chop (which is highly recommended, but looked a little dry and my husband said mine are better). I definitely liked the place much better than my husband did, but overall though, I'd go back here again and again if I could just get a reservation. more

Rushed, crowded, overpriced, pretentious and inconsistent 1/11/2007

We were there on a Monday, but this is no excuse for how awful this experience was. The waitress seemed friendly, helpful and accommodating, although the hostess kept reminding people that they had to finish their meals in order for tables to become available. People were actually told how long they could stay there. The wine list is beyond markup, with many unsuitable selections that don't match the food well, especially the dessert wines (I work in the wine business). My friend and I LOVED the scrumptious meatball sliders, however we both ordered the roast snapper and a side of brussels sprouts. The snapper somehow managed to be both overcooked and raw at the same time, stringy and hard to cut. Served on runny, tasteless mashed potatoes. The only detectable flavoring seemed to be salt. The sprouts were tough and overly sweet. Out of sheer curiosity at whether or not they would ruin it, and because were were early for our play, we stayed for dessert. The fruit cobbler was all flour and sugar. Then we watched in horror as the hostess made the next table get up in the middle of their meal and move for more high profile guests. For these outrages, for just 2 of us, we shelled out over $115 for the meal, 1 drink each and 1 dessert wine. Avoid at all costs, for cost it will be. Pros: meatball sliders Cons: absolutely everything else more

Average food, terrible service 12/27/2006

The restaurant is cute, but that is all I can say for it. It suffers from a marked lack of professionalism. However, it's not from lack of trying -- in fact, they are trying too hard to be an ""it"" restaurant and it comes off as forced. Rude, distant service on every level, and inconsistent meals add to the unpleasantness of the experience. more

Typical West Village 12/22/2006

Living in the WV, I've been to almost every restaurant in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, most of them are exactly the same. Same menu, same prices, closely packed tables. The Little Owl is no exception. The food was good enough - the side was the best part. We were very disappointed in the desserts, though. A cute place, but like almost every other in the area. Pros: Cute, Friendly Chef, Open Kitchen Cons: Small, Long Waits, Unoriginal more

Great atmosphere and amazing food. 10/22/2006

Came here on a Friday night with my parents (in from out of town) and we had an amazing experience--besides having to wait for 45 mins even though we had a reservation. It could have been due to the presence of a few celebs who simply sat for far too long after finishing. Once we sat, though, it was a great experience. They brought out a complimentary appetizer, and we had great service. I HIGHLY recommend the pork and the meatball sliders, but everything at our table was incredible. The atmosphere was great, light and airy, but cozy and comfortable--and not too noisy, which the parents appreciated. This place is great. Pros: Atmosphere, food Cons: Waits more

Best Everything 10/16/2006

Very Good West Village Spot 10/3/2006

I went to the Little Owl last night and was generally impressed. Scallop apetizer was terrific - cooked perfectly, with a touch of salt, pepper and olive oil. Halibut was a bit overcooked but still good. Very reasonable wine list. more
