...but I've had nothing but good experiences with this place at both their old and new locations. The food is great (I like the cuban bbq sandwich), they have a good selection of microbrews available for such a small place, and they have live entertainment on friday and saturdays. Perfect for a date or small group. In response to the comment about the place being drafty - it is an old shockoe bottom building after all. Feel free to waste 45 minutes of your weekend to eat at an overpriced, cookie-cutter, big box restaurant over at short pump or stony point. Rediculous portion sizes over there will help continue to expand your waistline as well. Zuppa offers a great alternative to break the mold, overall a great experience every time. Pros: Great food, Atmosphere, Value, & Entertainment Cons: Parking (as with any other Shockoe establishment) more

Terrible experience overall! 7/29/2008

New to Richmond, eaten at several other resturants in the area trying to find great food and wine at good prices. We received a coupoun buy one get one free..which we try not to do because you know the saying...you get what you pay for. We walked in - it was compelety dead except for the locals at the bar. We were seated at a tiny little two top at the window. We were attacked by flies the entire time we were there. The waitress sat two other people next to us...keeping in mind we were the only ones in that dining area! They must have been seated maybe less than a foot away...ridiculous. So there we sat, next to two other strangers having dinner - really with them, the sun was beating through the window with massive amounts of flies!! I know we should have left but we continued to order a sandwich and soup....that's what their known for right??? Anyhow the waitress came over maybe once then we never saw her again. She brought the bill and then acted completely rude because of the coupoun....I wonder if the owner (I'm he is the one that sent the coupons to attract new business) knew how rude his staff treated the customers that brought a coupon in to try the resturant?? The food itself was very average, will not go back!!! Terrible experience all around! :( Pros: Average food Cons: Dining area was dirty, wait staff was rude more

Enjoyed It! 7/24/2008

I visited for the first time a few weeks ago and enjoyed it very much. I had the Italian chopped salad with a cup of the lobster bisque soup. It was very good and I got a lot for the price. The atmosphere was good but I felt as though our table was too close to the one beside us. But that is something that can be overlooked, especially since I went there for lunch. I will go back! more

After my second visit, I've determined that my first visit wasn't a fluke. The menu is a very interesting read, but the delivery, both in terms of food and service fails. On my first visit, I ordered some variant of Eggs Benedict. On the menu, their twist on the standard sounded interesting. I've since forgotten what that twist was, but I didn't forget the service. My food came out cool-to-cold. I sent it back and it returned after it was zapped or baked into leather. The manager(?) who literally dropped the plate off, did so, so quickly, that his muttered apology was over his shoulder as he was trotting away. I gave them another try to be fair. This time wasn't much different except they were not busy. The food was hot, but generally not interesting, and certainly not worth the service. I ordered a couple of appetizers as a meal - the soup sampler and the Thai beef skewers. The soup sampler was 'nice', but not great. I got 3 dollops of soups - Thai Chicken Noodle (good), black bean (average) and tomato (bland). I'm not one generally to be critical of potions, but in this case I make an exception. I didn't expect to get full servings, but for paying twice the price of a cup of soup, I would expect to get at least a cup's worth. The soup was the highlight of the visit. The Thai beef skewers were very unremarkable and the "Spicy peanut dipping sauce" was only half right. It did have peanuts. But any relation to spice was lost. The service was poor again. Very pleasant, but sorely lacking. After asking for more time before ordering a desert, I never saw my waitress again. So I didn't order more, nor get more coffee, nor even the check until I got up and chased it down. I commented on it to the waitress and she just shrugged it off. As the other review stated, there is fair amount of bafflingly buzz for this place. One friend said they were better before 'the move' to new digs. That may be so, but I can't see going there now. Pros: Interesting decor Cons: Food, Service more

Don't Waste Your Time... 10/26/2007

I've heard all the rave reviews about this place, but they all must have been from people who had no taste buds. We ordered for an appetizer, the garlic bread with MARINARA sauce. For my entree, I ordered grilled cheese (with 2" thick bread per-slice, too big to actually fit in my mouth) and TOMATO SOUP. The first thing I noticed was that the soup and the marinara sauce tasted strangely IDENTICAL!! Except for the slight oregano/parsley flavor of the marinara-they were of the same substance. #2: My partner ordered Lobster Bisque, and I guess in Zuppa's mind, bisque means ultra, hard to get-down-the throat "Soup"-because, and I am not kidding-it was the thickness of pudding. To top it off, the waitress could care less that my partner stepped on a big chair tack that pierced his shoe all the way to his foot, she only seemed concerned with getting our order taken, so she could go back to doing whatever she was doing before we walked in. Not friendly, not compassionate and she didn't even ask how our meal was after we were done. Probably because she knew that the food there wasn't worth the time of day. So, as mentioned, I wouldn't even bother. Go somewhere else and skip this mold smelling place of dinning, because honestly-it's overpriced for it's quality and you will not be satisfied what you order, especially the Marinara Soup. Pros: I like some of the ambience, the bead board addition was nice. Cons: Slightly breezy in the winter though. Service, food, bad soup selection for a place named Zuppa! more
