Classic German Biergarten 7/28/2006

If you are in the mood for a taste of Europe - Germany specifically - make sure to stop by Zum Schneider. Waiters wear authentic clothing, tables are the long wood kind, and the beer is huge and great! They have holiday festivities all the time - we went there for Easter last year - and everyone is always in a great mood. Wonderful place to come with a bunch of friends and possibly meet some new ones. more

Guten beer 5/11/2006

Zum Schneider is a German beer bar in Alphabet City known for its proud tradition of celebrating all things German, more specifically their beer. Staffed mostly of German-born or German-speaking employees, only food native to Deutschland is served. It's a hit or miss menu, but that's not really why people come. The beer is a carefully edited selection German beers, appealing to palates from very light to extra dark. In the summer, tables are set up on the sidewalk where you can chat with friends or stare at the beauty that is Avenue C. Make sure to check out their calendar of events, because if there's one thing the people at Zum Schneider know how to do - it's celebrate for any given reason. Their annual Karnevale is a tickets-only event, and really, truly is not to be missed. more

Editorial
  • Maybe the East Village didn't need a beer garden, but it certainly wanted one. Seat yourself--a squeeze on weekends--grab a handful of sourdough pretzels and choose from a dozen hard-to-find German beers. A varied crowd craves the foamy pilsners and fruity Schneider Weisse wheat beers, but happy hour takes an even happier turn when schnitzel skeptics boldly bite into bratwurst with mustard potato salad, a classic Wiener schnitzel or sweet red cabbage and schweinebraten (delicious roasted pork with a crispy, bacony crust). No drunken sing-alongs here--guests are more mellow and merry than raucous and revved, especially after the apple strudel.
