Great place to find your self-confidence 1/18/2010

Body Mind Systems makes you feel welcome as soon as you walk through the door. My daughter started 1 year ago and her strength and self-confidence has greatly improved. The staff is well trained in their craft and they supportively teach self-discipline and the art of challenging one's self to improve. Thanks to their training my daughter has gained both outer and inner strength. It is encouraging and fun to watch her apply this discipline to her everyday life. Maybe mom should sign up!:) more

Tai Chi at New Horizons at Choate! 3/20/2009

Charles DeVirgilio has volunteered to lead Tai Chi classes at New Horizons at Choate retirement community of Woburn, MA for several years. His generous spirit and broad knowledge of Tai Chi clearly motivates and inspires seniors of the Warren Avenue retirement community. Resident seniors attest that regular exercise reduces stress and increases feelings of well being. Charles? loyal following of about twenty residents appreciate his very pleasant personality, fondness for seniors, and Tai Chi expertise. Charles is truly an asset to New Horizons at Choate. New Horizons residents greatly value and appreciate Charles? contributions to the community and highly recommend his wonderful services for others. more

Tai Chi for Seniors 2/15/2009

I am an Activities Director at a retirement community. Charles has been teaching the senior community weekly Tai Chi classes for 4 or more years. Charles understands the needs, abilities as well as limitations of his senior students. The classes are attended by 15 to 20 faithful residents. Working with these same people Charles has seen much improvement in their mobility, strength and all around energy. The residents love Charles' interaction with them and look forward to his classes. When budgets got tight Charles continued to teach donating his time. Charles loves to see how Tai Chi helps improve his seniors class. I highly recommend Charles' classes. more

BEST Martial Arts in New England! 1/20/2009

My son who is 6 years old has been attending the pee-wee Martial Art classes at Body Mind Systems in Arlington Center three times a week for the past 8 months. I originally wanted him to make new friends, get some exercise and hoped that he would learn better how to focus, listen and follow orders while having fun at it. When he first started, instructor Charles saw right away that my son was having problems listening, teasing others, talking too much and not always participating. In so little time and with great professionalism, instructor Charles has transformed my child's attitude tremendously. He has teaching techniques that suit every child and pays great attention to all children in his class. Instructor Charles has wonderful ways to work with children that are so beneficial to them, as to develop their own self esteem, to comprehend their own bodies, to interact with others and to better be physically coordinated. Although the classes have regular warm up session, Charles always find new ideas to varying his teachings while using his imagination, sometimes with the use of toys so that the children can have fun and enjoy themselves while learning, without ever getting bored. My son is now better focused, respects his peers and is better able to follow instructions without constant reminders. He looks forward to every class and I can only express how happy and thankful I am to instructor Charles and his colleagues for providing this wonderful environment. This is a place I highly recommend! more

Looking For a Place for Your Child Maybe Yourself Come Here 1/19/2009

This is the awesome place for children of the ages 4-17 to learn martial arts. The instructors name is Charles. There are four age groups ages 4-6, ages 7-10, ages 11-17 and 18-any age. For the 4-6 Peewee classes he does teach them some movements but sometimes they have fun like the game bombs away and more. The children in his class get so into this game. In the ages 11-17 he teaches the class more on movements and usually Charles has them do a fun game like relay races but the only way you can travel is by a kick, cartwheel, etc, etc. All the children in each age groups look like they are really into the class. Also the parking lots may have few parking slots but this martial arts school is near a restaurant, Starbucks coffee, CVS, and more stores. The school is designed in a way that the parents can stay to watch the class. Also Charles helps the children learn manners. Choose this place because both of my children had so much fun at this school. Choose this school if you want your child to learn and have fun. more

Found What We Were Looking For 1/14/2009

After spending almost 3 years at another martial arts school in town, realized that neither my young son nor I was getting what we wanted and that a change was appropriate. After looking at several other schools, we ended up at Martial Arts for Health. Almost 3 years later, it was still absolutely the best choice we could have made. This place is different in that it takes a more holistic approach to martial arts - i.e., it''s not just about the combat part. The emphasis on both mental and physical development, combined with the focus on maintaining more of the traditional discipline and respect for the line (the continuum from the higher to lower belts) fit for both my then 10 year old son and me. While the instructors will definitely push you to get out of your mental and physical comfort zones - you need to do that to develop - it is done in a way that recognizes that every student is not the same and that can't all do the same things. To be perfectly upfront, the instructors can come across as aggressive in trying to get people to sign up and commit. However, from what I have seen and experienced, this comes from a very heartfelt and sincere desire to see you have the chance to experience the potential for personal growth that the school offers through your martial arts training. Looking at what the school has done for us, I have no problem in recommending it to anyone of any age or ability. more

Owner Gives Tai Chi Lessons Pro-Bono to Help Local Non-profit 1/12/2009

The owner of Martial Arts for Health (Charles Devirgilio), of his own accord, generously offered to give Tai Chi lessons at his studio to some of our girls from our Arlington residential treatment facility, Germaine Lawrence. Germaine Lawrence treats girls who have severe behavioral and emotional difficulties and is a challenging group to teach, even in the best of circumstances. Because of the persistance of his instruction, the girls have learned valuable, life-long skills (e.g. discipline, goal-setting) and relaxation techniques, which are much needed for our population. I am continually amazed by the generosity of members of our local community, such as Charles, who give so generously of their time and other resources to help others. more

Hot spot to learn Martial Arts 1/10/2009

Our 2 children are both members of the Martial Arts for Health school in Arlington. We signed them up 1 year ago when we arrived in town. They both dramatically improved their physical skills and mental balance thanks to the profesionalism of instructor Charles and his team. The young students learn true values, discipline, self confidence, self respect and respect of the others, in a friendly and safe atmosphere on top of a vast array of martial arts moves. Pros: pro and friendly staff. more

A great martial arts school 1/9/2009

I highly recommend this school. I've been attending for 3 years, two to four times a week, starting after a serious back injury. The school and all of its instructors have helped me be the best I can be, whether I practice intensely or in a more relaxed way, whether often or less often; I set my own schedule, and they have always respected the decisions I have made for myself. Classes are small, and the teaching is individualized for each student in the class, as impossible as that may sound. I've seen nothing but respect there for all students. I've also seen NO injuries. The staff is dedicated to helping each student reach whatever goal he or she may have. I see a lot of happy, motivated students here - boys, girls, men, women, young, and old. The feeling of community is remarkable. The holiday party in December (pot-luck) was extremely well-attended. Same for the picnic every July. They have a float every year in the Woburn town parade, and a booth at Arlington Town Day every year. They're active in the Arlington High School Martial Arts Club, and they provide gratis access for certain social outreach organizations. Their kids tournament is also very well-attended, by kids and adults, parents and non-parents. Pros: Centrally located. Great instructors. Convenient class times. Parking convenient. more
