Fantastic hair dresser and great person 6/13/2011

I don't usually write reviews, but I read the negative reviews about Jason and had to write about my own experiences at Zen 2002. I first saw Jason's work nearly 40 years ago on a coworker. She was Jason's model at a hair show. I believe he won some category - if he didn't he sure deserved a prize. Over the years many other coworkers received beautiful cuts and styles from Jason. I didn't try him at the time because I had a long relationship with my then hair dresser. But, when she retired I immediately called Jason - probably about 6 years ago. With Jason doing my hair I received many complements about my hair - even perfect strangers. When I retired I didn't want to drive from Long Beach to Pasadena for haircuts so I tried other salons and hair dressers. Silly me. I finally came to my senses and went back to Jason with my tail between my legs and a peace offering of a bottle of fine bourbon under my arm. I learned my lesson and won't be going any where else! The other hair dressers in the salon are also very good. I referred a friend's daughter to Zen 2002 when she was getting married in Pasadena. Her entire wedding party had their hair done at the salon and the styles were exactly what they wanted. I highly recommend Jason and Zen 2002! more

Excellent for 20+ years 5/31/2011

I have been going to Zen 2002 for over 20 years now and I won't go anywhere else for haircuts. Jason, the owner, is great at knowing what will look best on me and has been consistently excellent in the quality of his cuts. I've read some of the complaints in other reviews about how they will sometimes be massaged or get a blowdry from an assistant instead of the stylist, but this is a pretty common practice at high-end hair salons that get really busy as far as I know. At the end of the day, I've always walked out of the salon looking great and receiving complements on my haircut from everyone I know. more

Knows hair 5/31/2011

I am a guy and have some what hard to manage hair as it is coarse and a bit thick. I've been to other high end salons but they can't get my hair right. Zen is open Tuesday-Saturday, but if you need a late appointment, Jason can accomodate you. (very hard working). When you first come for your appointment, you'll be greeted and the shampoo person will call you to change into a smock. The shampoo is probably my favorite part because they shampoo twice and condition once while giving you a little head massage. I haven't had that at other salons. For the haircut, Jason understands different types of hair and knows how to manage what you have. One thing that I notice from other places is that my hair grows out much better over the next month. when I need tips on my hair styling or products, he can teach you how to do it. After the cut, you will get another rinse, and then back to the chair and he'll finish with styling. If you need help with your hair...give it a try! more

Good cut, good color 5/29/2011

I've been seeing Jason for about two years for cut and color. I must say that no one has been able to cut my hair so that I can maintain the style myself between salon visits. I've been to some well known places, not just around the corner. But Jason has enabled me to maintain my own hair so that I look styled..............I really feel that he understands"" my not-so-easy-to-manage, thin, curly hair and works with it; he's not just giving me a haircut. The color also enhances my curls, gives them depth. He's not cheap, but I'm worth it. more

Years of great hair care 7/15/2010

I've been a client of Jason for at least 10 years. I was initially referred to him by my acting coach. Since then, my wife and many friend have have also become loyal and regular fans. We now live more then 900 miles from Los Angeles, but whenever we absolutely must get our hair done, we fly or drive in to see Jason. I just booked an appointment 2 months in advance...when I'll be in town... Pros: Precision Hair Care more

This place is overpriced and unprofessional. First, I made an appointment and came in only to be sent away as soon as I arrived because they suddenly didn't have enough time that day. Then when I finally did receive my haircut, Jason didn't even blow-dry my hair himself. He just had the hair-wash girl do it while he sits in front drinking his coffee or whatever. Mind you this place isn't cheap, but I heard good things about it and decided to give it a try. Although the haircut wasn't bad, the terrible customer service ruined it for me. more

My first and my last 6/17/2007

This is my first and my last time on this hair salon. I went there with a picture of what color I wanted for my highlights. Eleanor the colorist said, it's not a good choice and show me another color, I said I want what is on the picture I brought. When my hair was done, I was not happy with the result, she said , she will remedy it, but then, I was afraid it will damage my hair, but she said , it will be fine, Well, the result is not the color I expected and it was bronzy. There is no massage offered when they shampood my hair. At first I was hesitant to write a review, because all the reviews I read was positive, but then, I wanted to tell my experience with this salon. The big shocker to me is the price, they charged me $180, wow, if I am satisfied , I won't complain, but my gosh, my hair color is ugly, this is not Beverly Hills, the place is decent, but not special or extra ordinary. I get my hair cut at Vidal Sassoon in Beverly Hills, but it was worth it, for the services they offered and the treatment you receive. Anyway, I won't go back in this salon. Pros: can't think of any, Cons: pricey for the services offered and atmosphere more

Outstanding work, great customer service--great neck massages! 2/22/2007

I fell in love with this salon the first time Jason (the owner) cut my hair. His cuts are gorgeous and precise, and he really designs your hair to be the best fit for your face. His assistants are also excellent and they pamper you with neck massages during hair washing, several beverage choices, and a comfortable waiting area with obscene amounts of (updated) magazines! This is a fantastic salon with very fair prices! more

Mediocrity Doesn't Justify High Prices 10/15/2006

I would go to this ""salon"" again if their prices were cut by at least $30 . . . the prices are normal for a good salon with high talent, service, and a nice atmosphere, but Zen 2002 made me blowdry my own hair, the physical appearance is so-so, and the person (owner) who was scheduled to do my hair had his assistant do all of it (including asking me to blowdry my own hair). I got color done - not recommended - and there's barely any difference from what I walked in with. It was supposed to be lighter and less bronzy - and it's a little darker and about the same amount of bronze. Pros: Nice staff, decent work Cons: High prices, mediocre work more

The Best in Town 5/18/2006

Zen 2002 hair salon is one of the top, affordable hair salons in town. they have seven experts in hair coloring & cuts. the prices at zen 2002 is great and their service is expectional. everyone who arrivals at Zen 2002 are treated like family. i had the honor of becoming part of the family because that i have had my hair service there for over a year. everytime i go to zen 2002, i am welcome with warm and friendliness by seven hairstylists who are Eleanor, Geraldine, Jason, Joan, Letty, Raul, and Ya-Ling. i have never seen any salons in LA that provide the services that I've receive at Zen 2002. i would like to introduce to everyone this great hair salon so everyone can experience this special place on Fair Oaks Ave in South Pasadena. A nice and relaxing joint w/ skillful stylists 4/26/2006

I really like the place because there is a really relaxing atmosphere in the salon. Some really high-profile salons in Los Angeles make you feel uncool, unhip, and ignored. This place definitely is more friendly, and the staff really cares about the customers. more

Zen 2002 Review 4/9/2006

This is a very excellent salon, the best out of all I have ever seen in my entire life. Unlike most salons that are near my neighborhood, the floors are clean and the bathrooms are unfilthy. The service is great, with professional stylists who really know their job. They take it upon themselves to make sure that the haircuts they produce turn out to be as satisfactory to the customer as possible, taking their assignments with zeal and passion. If I had to name my number one hair salon, Zen 2002 would be it! more
