small place, bad attitude 12/4/2010

I used to really like their food, though I did not approve of their hygiene standards. But the man who owns the place completely turned me off with his bad attitude. Taking out food from Zaws entails a 30-45 minute wait after placing the order. What is worse is that even if I placed an order for take out by phone and arrived 45 minutes later, I would still have to wait for another 30-45 minutes! Clearly, he wouldn't even start making my order till I got there. This happened to me not once, but on 3 different occasions. When I complained, the owner instead of being apoplogetic, was rude to me and even went to the extent of saying I SHOULD NOT ORDER HENCEFORTH IF I CANNOT WAIT!!!! I have never been there since...good as though the food is, I would rather order from somewhere where people are nice to customers. Would never recommend more

Fresh Asian food 1/19/2010

This is a fabulous hole-in-the-wall takeout-only place; Pittsburgh seems to mostly have sit-down places with a take-out sideline. But anyway. We've been buying food here since just after they opened. I've never been disappointed. Zaw's does all the standard Chinese-American dishes, but better/fresher than other places (get the Tso Chicken to see what I mean). You must try the non-Chinese specialties such as the curried Singapore noodles; take the time to explore the menu, you will be rewarded. I do mean it about the ""Chinese-American""; do not expect real Mainland food: also, be aware that this is a strictly stir/deep-fry and boil operation, not really the full range of Chinese cuisine. Some people have mentioned that the place looks dirty.I agree it could certainly use more frequent steam-cleans, on the other hand I've never been sick from their food (unlike some other places in town). The people running the place, Sonny, Marvin and Esther are amazing. Watching Marvin cook is a treat, Esther's knife work is amazing and Sonny always knows who you are (""I'll put in an extra fortune cookie for your son""). Eat there. Pros: non-Chinese specialties Cons: you need to call your order in ~40 mins in advance more

Best Burmese style cooking around 2/11/2008

On Southwest China/Burma/Southeast Asian standards, the restaurant is immaculate, but I would not normally eat anything from a kitchen that looked like that. That being said, it is the best Burmese-style food around. I have not had a bad take-out from here. Wonderful Chinese, Burmese and other Asian cooking. Pros: Best take out Chinese around Cons: No place to eat there, the place could be cleaner more

Best Value, Great food 8/2/2007

Zaw's is the best and most reliable Chinese takeout place in the Pittsburgh area. But more than being a joint to get some cheap and quick grub, Zaw's offers outstanding, expertly prepared Asian cuisine. Pros: Food quality, Price, Service Cons: Lack of expansive seating more

Great Prices??? 4/10/2007

Everyone always talks about what a great value Zaw's is, but I was not impressed. The food is good and the portion sizes are large, but when you walk in it's overwhelmingly dirty. The people are definitley nice, but I don't agree that it is a value at all. It is just as expensive as any other chinese restaurant where you can actually sit down and be served and not be grossed out by the filth Pros: Portion Size, Service Cons: Cleanliness, Price more

Great food! 8/5/2005

Our favorite place for Chinese take-out! Their food is terrific, the prices are great and the people that own Zaw's are so very nice! One of my favorites is the Szechuan Beef, but everything we have ordered has been yummy! more

Best Chinese Food EVER 4/1/2005

We just had our first Zaw's experience and it was FANTASTIC. The best Chinese food we've ever had! I loved the Pork Lo Mein (with big piece of pork looking like they were fresh from a pork rib! YUM!) and the Singapore Rice Noodles was great too! Their egg rolls were at least 2 inches thick! We'll never go to a chinese buffet again! more

chinese heaven 11/25/2002

I tried Zaws for the first time and they have made a dedicated customer of me for years to come. The Chicken in garlic sauce was absolutel the best i have ever had Pros: inexpensive, service, quality Cons: no parking, very busy more

Zaw's - Gourmet Asian takeout 6/2/2002

Very good chinese standards with some specials, all at rock bottom prices. Beware Monday, the one day a week they're closed. Its hard to go wrong with anything on their menu; a personal favorite is burmese garlic noodles with barbecued pork. One pint sized servings of 66% of the menu are under $3.75; shrimp dishes and 'Chef's Specials' are higher priced ($6.50 to $8.95). Four people could easily get a filling meal for little more than $20, but its all take out. Pros: inexpensive, excellent food Cons: poor parking, take out only more
