I have had the pleasure of studying yoga under Stacey Brass, one of the founders of Yogamaya, for the last five years and was thrilled to check out this new studio. My already high expectations were far exceeded from the moment I walked in. The space itself is absolutely beautiful in design with lofty ceilings, wood carved windows and exquisite paintings throughout. One has a feeling of spaciousness and relaxation in every room whether it be the reception, changing room or practice space which is so hard to find anywhere in NYC.
There are a wide range of classes accommodating yogis of all levels, as well as specialized instructions such as the Men's Class, Big Juicy or Restorative. I have truly enjoyed every class I have taken from various teachers at Yogamaya where there is a strong emphasis on the choreography of the poses, embodying the true essence of the Vinyasa practice.
Although I have studied yoga for many years, I love that I can take an open level or level 1 class and still be challenged by the instructor. In addition, their level 3 classes are designed to enable the advanced practitioner to evolve their Asana practice in a mindful and safe environment. Additionally, there is a perfect balance of the spiritual practice with the physical, that is truly respectful of all, no matter what your personal spiritual or religious beliefs may be.
I have been to many studios in NYC and I would say that Yogamaya is without a doubt my favorite because every aspect of the space honors the inner and outer landscape of the yoga practice. I always look forward to and am grateful for the time I get to spend there and take a retreat from hectic city life.
