5-star selection, 0-star service 11/22/2005

Without a doubt, the Wine and Cheese Cask has an amazing selection of wine, cheese, beer, and other gourmet sundries. However, the only reason I frequent this establishment is because it is the closest liquor store to my house. Why? Because the staff is the most miserable, unfriendly, and easily annoyed group of people I've ever encountered in customer service. The toll booth operators on the Mass Pike are happier than these people. With the sole exception of Kim - the Korean-American girl - they are routinely 'put out' to slice the deli meat, describe a cheese, handle returns, and ring up items. Are they gravely under-paid? Are the managers tyrants? Are they jaded by the condescending Cambridge clientele? Probably a little bit of all of these but please, if I'm paying $20/lb. for imported ham or $10 for a single bottle of beer, try to crack a smile once in a while. Or, if you're just not happy, move on. There are plenty of hourly, part-time jobs out there. more

Wine and Cheese 10/16/2005

The Wine and Cheese Cask is just as it sounds - a great selection of wine and cheese. The beer selection is not great - they have fewer options than other places - they might have some of the really common types of beer, but in all, they probably only have 20 or so types of beer. The prices are reasonable in that they have a good range - everything from cheap red wine to expensive ports, but the prices are within the range that you would expect. The staff is helpful when you have questions about the various types of cheese and even help you pair the wine with it if you ask. The location is great - it is at an intersection right between Harvard, Inman, Central and Union Squares. This is really convenient, especially for people connected with Harvard. This is a "must visit" before your next party! Enjoy! more

Great selection 9/26/2005

I bought both cheese and wine here for my wedding and was very pleased with the selection. Wines from around the world line the shelves interspersed with a myriad selection of cheese. Champagne is also sold here and the propitier is happy to sell by the case at a discount. As the store is located down the street from a university, a good selection of beer is available and last I checked they did sell kegs here. Customer service is excellent. more

The Wine and Cheese Cask 8/16/2005

The Wine and Cheese Cask, located just outside of Inman Square at the corner of Washington and Beacon, is a great market that will handle all of the Wine and Cheese needs you have. Their selection of cheese, pate, and cheese accoutrements is quite thorough. Feel free to ask to try a cheese, they usually will accommodate and help you make buying decisions without making you feel like an idiot for not knowing the difference between Tellagio and Gruyere. (One of my absolute favorite cheeses available here is the Double Cream Gouda). The wine selection is not mammoth, but what they have is top quality at very reasonable prices. Sidenote: the cheese counter stays open as long as the shop is open for those late night cheese binges! more
