Not worth the short drive to play here 4/1/2010

I love to play golf and Raleigh has some really nice golf courses and some rally nice places to practice golf. Unfortunately Wildwood Green does not offer either. The practice areas are the worst in Raleigh. The practice area here has a putting and chipping green along with a sand trap. The putting green is in poor shape, the chipping green is small. The sand trap is full of gravel and rocks, which is just like the traps on the golf course so I guess it is a good place to practice for this golf course. The driving range is small and they use artificial turf mats which is fine, except these mats are ancient and you cant get the ball to stay on then because they are in such bad shape. The first tee lines up like a municipal course, the starters don't work off of the tee sheet but by who walks up first, so if you have a 10 am tee times, show up at 9:00 am and wait on the tee box, because if you show up at 9:50 you may not get off until noon. The pace of play is really slow about 2:45-3:00 hours per nine. The tee boxes have no grass and the fairways are like hitting off of the parking lot, baked clay with some weeds, and a little bit of Bermuda grass. There are rocks in the sand traps, many traps have no sand at all. I was out with my nephew and thought that this short public course would be good for a 12 year old. We were harassed by older men that clearly don;t like kids on the golf course, despite the fact my nephew's 95 was probably better than their score and since we were waiting on every shot we were not holding up the golf course. We didn't see much of the rangers but when I asked them to talk to the group behind us that kept hitting into us and made unnecessary comments about kids on ""their golf course"", he looked at us and drove in the opposite direction. When we made the halfway point I went in to ask for assistance from the pro shop, but the counter was empty and no one was there to help. The snack bar girl gave me a business card of the manager and suggested that we call him Not surprisingly, he never returned my call. Why would I expect that management cared? Since this experience we have been out to River Ridge and were treated well and have returned two more times. Even though I live just 5 minutes from Wildwood Green, I will drive 20 minutes to River Ridge for now on. They are much more friendly and management is visible and interested in making sure golfer have a nice day. Pros: that there are other optionsin Raleigh Cons: poor conditions, slow play, more

If all you want to do is golf.....go elsewhere 6/27/2009

So poor in so many ways. From slow play, to poor greens and fairways this place needs new management and a lot of attitude adjustment. Pros: Layout has potential Cons: poor playing conditions, slow pace of play, no parking more

Red Flag- golf for walkers!!! 10/17/2008

This course has so much potential. However I must agree that the cart situation is annoying. You plan your golf day with buddies and the round take over five hours because your cart breaks down, not once but twice.... The head professional and staff attendants were professional and courteous; however we never got a straight answer on why the carts were dropping like flies. We weren't the only ones. None the less, there is a so-called ""golf director"" who is annoying and seems to have a comment to everyone about anything or nothing. I noticed him approaching people in the shop saying off the wall things and all I wanted to do was get my buddies and go, run for the hills. The snack bar is limited but the staff was nice. I feel bad for the people who work with this guy, I think his name was Willis... If you are going to play the course walk. The course was in good shape. more

This is a joke, right?? 9/19/2008

Gotta be honest with you here - the last 2 star review was too kind and forgot a few things - 1) $30 for 9 hole starting at 6pm?? You sure? I can name a few golf courses right now that'll let you get a full day of 18 hole for that price. 2) This is one of those places that puts out a Buy One Get One Free coupon and then does some fuzzy math to convince you that B1G1 = $5 off. (Well, I guess that's better than The Crossings where they convince you B1G1=$1.50 off) Hint to any business owner: if you actually honor the coupon, we might actually want to come back and pay full price one day. 3) Not only was the place strung with dead/abandoned carts, but the guys at the clubhouse were like ""oh yeah, there's some steep hills out there - I don't know why people think they can just drive up those"" Yeah, pardon me for forgetting that it's normal to pay $30 to PUSH your cart every time there's a 5 degree incline. Hint: Just say you forgot to charge the cart or you were being GREEN and saving electricity or something instead of trying to blame the customers. 4) A guy walking his dog through the course informed us dead carts are nothing new - confirmed of course by the review below from 2002(!) I actually wouldn't be surprised if the carts were never charged between now and then, i'm kinda not kidding.\r \r \r Pros: Course might be good - i wouldn't know b/c the cart never made it... Cons: Expensive, dead cart, poor customer service more

Wildwood: All Looks, No Service 9/19/2008

I?ll start on a good note and say Wildwood is an immaculate golf course, probably one of the best-kept I?ve seen in my brief time playing golf. The pro shop is pretty nice?there?s a snack bar and golf gear available. Nothing new. So in that respect, I?d recommend checking it out, but bring your wallet, for the green fees aren?t for those on a budget. Don?t get me wrong. Wildwood is an excellent golf course...if you plan on walking. To put it mildly, our 9-holf golf game was completely ruined because our carts (yes?two carts in our party) died out on us in the middle of the 13th hole, a hilly par five. These carts were obviously not charged, as they couldn?t make it up the slightest hills without us Fred Flintsone-ing it. They slowed our game down to the point where it was too dark to continue, thus ending our day. And it wasn?t just our carts; on that same hole, there were two other dead ones camped around the green. What bugged me even more was the fact that they didn?t offer refunds for our terrible experience. They handed the three of us rainchecks marked for ?super twilight?, whatever that means. So, plain and simple, when I redeem that raincheck, that?ll be the last time I go to that golf course. If you?re a walker, go for it; it?s a beautiful course, so for that I?ll recommend it, but wear some good golf shoes because you just may end up hoofing it if you get a golf cart. Maybe I'm being a little hard on the star rating, but the overall experience left me and the rest of my group seething. ***UPDATE*** So I redeemed the raincheck they gave me from the previous debacle, and apparently, lightening strikes twice. The cart I had didn't die this time around...it had NO PARKING BRAKE. I had to park the cart in all sorts of funky positions just so the thing wouldn't roll down a hill and into a lake. Easily the worst golf experiences I've had were here at Wildwood, and I won't so much as pass by this facility again. AND they lose a star. Pros: Beautiful course, challenging Cons: Golf carts are absolutely worthless, and the staff doesn't really seem to care. more

Great location, good course 9/15/2003

Location of this course can't be beat! The staff is excellent and the course is in good condition. Some might find the length to be a negative, but I think it makes it more challenging by making you control your irons. The newly added GPS system is a great added feature-makes the round a lot more fun. Pros: location, staff, GPS System more

Should be called Bushwood and Blown Up! 7/8/2002

This course has become a big disappointment. The condition is poor, pace of play is slow, value is non-existent, GPS is no longer on carts, carts tend to die in middle of rounds so bring a cell phone to call the pros hop for a replacement. There is no manager on weekends, so if you have a problem requiring attention you must call back Mon-Friday between 9 and 5. \r \r With so many other really nice options in Raleigh, this course should be at the bottom of anyone/s list.\r \r \r UPDATE: (March 2010)\r \r After two years of not playing at Wildwood Green, I was coaxed by friends to return to this course. The experience was, once again,a huge disappointment. Location is everything and people are not willing to drive to find a better golf course. This place is always crowded and the pace of play is absolutely horrid. The practice area is even worse, they did have two people at the check in counter, the first tee was backed up and no starter was there, so people were ""self starting"" despite the fact it was a 70 degree afternoon in March. The driving range is ugly- all old, hard, and bumpy mats. The practice putting green was just as bad as I remembered and the golf course was worse then two years ago. If I could take away the single star rating I would. \r \r As long as people keep showing up and paying money to play this place, the owners will continue to milk this cash cow dry. They don't appear to put money back into the golf course and after 25 years it has to be paid off, so it is probably a retirement nest egg for the owners.\r I bet once the economy improves the owners will look to sell the land for real estate development. As a golf course it wil take too much money to bring the condition up to par and eventually golfers will migrate to the netter conditioned, improved service and higher value of River Ridge, Eagle Ridge or Falls Village all just a short drive from this place. \r Pros: The location will be good for condos. Cons: They haven't ruened it inot condos yet. more
