I got two estimates from pest control companies for what appeared to be a rat problem. Western's was about $100 less and they seemed to know more about how to abate the problem. They proofed right away. But then I had to call for traps. Call for them to come back and check the traps -- each time. No traps caught anything and we still had ""something"" up there. So we had to leave the attic door open (to the exterior, thank heavens) and hope after 3 weeks of no water or food the pest would leave on its own.
It's now four weeks into the contract and went ahead and removed the traps myself (nothing caught). If they want the traps back, they can call me. Because essentially they did nothing. It's not worth me arranging another appointment -- they never called me after doing the proofing. I haven't heard any more noises up there -- so I just hope there are no dead animals.
I don't know if they put a chemical on the traps to attract rodents, but if they don't then there was nothing on the trap to attract the pests. Perplexing too.
I would recommend that if you can get on the roof yourself and look for openings through vents or rafters that you get some wire and nails and seal off access yourself. Then, get some CHEAP rat traps (the wooden, old-fashioned kind) and just put peanut butter on them and trap the buggers yourself. I paid $295.00 for essentially all this and am kicking myself that it could have been so simple on my own and would have saved me about $240.00 or so.
Pros: will come day of request
Cons: you have to babysit them with service you paid for
