Horrible service...does not honor advertisement in newspaper 1/11/2009

I made a reservation after seeing a special in the paper for 19.98 (mussels, dessert, etc). I use to love this place..until now. When we arrived, we were seated next to a private party. It was very loud and freezing in there so we asked to move to another table on the other side of the room. That took about 15 minutes despite the fact that there were hardly other people in our section. Once the waitress came over we asked about the special and she went to talk to the manager. We were told that the special did not apply to sunday brunch. That was not included on the advertisement and we were upset that they would not honor the ad in the paper. We left because of the whole principal behind it and went next door to Novita (which was AWESOME) by the way. The host asked if their special applied to brunch (they are owned by the same company) and their manager and chef said they would honor it. The host then said it's probably because Waterzooi was having a private party and that is why they wouldn't honor it. Novita was great! Don't go to WAterzooi! Their service is awful, waitstaff unskilled and their manager needs to learn about customer service. I will never go back there again. If anyone knows of a better Belgian restaurant in the LI/Queens area let me know! Oh and by the way... I opened my email at 10pm to see that Waterzooi cancelled my reservation at 12:32 on Open Table. Isn't that the rudest thing ever?? DO NOT EAT AT WATERZOOI! Pros: I use to like the mussels but the service ruined it for me. Cons: Manager, waitstaff, customer service... more

UPDATED: No sense of baby safety or how to cook seafood 10/18/2007

(2006 visit) First of all, this is not the place to go if you have little ones in diapers. There are no changing stations in the bathroom, they initially wouldn't let me change my daughter in the restaurant, and the management suggested that I use the purse shelf (a sheet metal shelf that was screwed & welded onto the outside of a stall wall and was about the width of a forearm) in the ladies room. Luckily, the waiter chose to be kind and look the other way while I changed her on the bench seat at our table. It was a good thing, because I was about to leave otherwise.\r \r Second, if you know anything about cooking, you know that shellfish such as shrimp cook very fast, and these poor teeny-tiny shrimp in my bouillabaisse were so tough I think they went in at the same time as the mussels.\r \r ADDED: We went back here in July, 2008 (because we meant to go to Plattdeutsche, but it was being renovated). We initially weren't going to be seated because they were booked, but my husband's cousin new the owner and after that name-drop we were all seated. I ordered an appetizer of foie gras, which was perfectly cooked, but my father-in-law's beef stew had dessert-dry meat, despite the sauce it was in. My husband's pork chops were pretty good (he still longed for sauerbraten). Their Pomme Frites are a little on the large side, IMHO. They still don't have a proper changing table in the ladies room (but have plenty of room for one), but they did splurge on a new high-powered (and super loud) hand dryer that scared the giddy right out of my toddler whenever someone used it. I walked out of the loo with wet hands to avoid upsetting her further. At this point I just may purchase and donate a changing table for them if I'm ever up that way again. Pros: Hip decor Cons: No changing table or empathy for the need to change diapers more

Mouth watering name to remember-even if you dont know what it means 2/20/2007

Always enjoyable. An overflowing bowl of their magical mussels(you choose the style), some frites & you will sing with delight. Does feel so very European in so many, very pleasing, ways. Strong service, nice deserts...always enjoyable. Pros: top notch Belgian Food more

Good food, good service, good times 10/22/2006

I went here for dinner with my boyfriend to celebrate our 4 year anniversary. The food was delicious and decently priced. A great selection of Belgium beer on tap and bottled. I didn't try their martinis, but there was also a good selection of that in the menu. The mussels were delicious. 1 order was enough for me and my boyfriend for dinner AND I had enough leftovers to feed myself and my roomate the next night. The sauce the mussels come in is delicious. My boyfriend had pork chops -- also good. The food portions in this place are HUGE, so go hungry. Service was excellent. The waitress was so attentive, but not annoyingly attentive. She didn't rush us even though people were waiting for a table. Great place for a date or to catch up with old friends. Pros: Great service, good food, excellent beer Cons: Really loud, no reservations on parties under 6 ppl. more

FOOD IS GOOD BUT ATTITUDE IS BAD 1/31/2006

I ate here once. It was fine the first time. The food was great. My husband and I liked it so much, we wanted to go a second time. The service the second time was bad. When I say service is bad, we had to leave before we sat down. The hostesses that work there were so rude, and obnoxious we couldn't believe our ears. We had made reservations, and confirmed them, but they had a problem and couldn't seat us for an hour. They hostesses gave us an attitude like it was our fault that they screwed up. We decided to go to the Waterzooi in Rockville Centre instead. The Waterzooi in RVC is so much better. The staff there is friendlier. We recommend you go only to the RVC Waterzooi. more

Yummy food 3/11/2003

This is the best food on Long Island! Try the moules they are heavenly! You can't eat just one serving. I am the founding member of 2X Crew and we have our monthly meetings at Waterzooi, we can't get enough! They also have delicious wines and Stella Artois the queen of all beers! You must go to Waterzooi and try it for yourself! Hip hip moules! more

Belgian Brilliance 11/23/2002

Located in the heart of Garden City, This cozy coture is artfully decorated with pleasant earthy colors, intimate tables, and high-backed booths. It is complete with a high barrel ceiling and a bar. I recommend the mussels, more than you can eat in one sitting and served with Belgian style fries. If you're after a steak, the filet mignon is superb. The wine and beer selection is good and you can order a half bottle of certain wines. The service is friendly. The decor is pleasant. The food is great! PRICE: For appetizer/main/dessert/and wine for 2 = $110 Pros: Reasonably priced, coat check, good parking Cons: reservations a must, service a little slow, drafty near door more

Overrated 11/8/2002

If you like being surrounded by NYer wannabes who cop attitudes, then this is the place for you. It's overcrowded and the girl bartenders that were there when I was there were snobby, and couldn't handle the task of serving lots of ppl quickly and efficiently. Their drinks weren't good at all either. Then I asked the male bartender to make me something and it was good...so look for the male bartender if you want a good drink!! Even still, the only fairly decent spot I've found on the island. The happening bars are in the city. Excellent grub though, so go to eat, don't go for the bar. more
