Editorial review from Citysearch 10/25/2012

\r It saddens me some people prefer going to japanese restaurants where they cover up its natural flavors w/blobs of sauce(high calorie high sodium) and call it ""flavorful"" and think that is ""traditional"" japanese food. Have you BEEN to JAPAN????\r \r If you want *authentic japanese izakaya* food you can actually taste at reasonable prices I definitely recommend coming here. more

I usually frequent Umi Sake House a few 6/7/2012

I usually frequent Umi Sake House a few blocks away and I'm not sure I'll ever wait in line at Umi again after this 1st highly impressionable visit to Wann!!! It was Happy Hour all day (these run Mondays and Tuesdays) and where do I begin? The food quality was second to none, the prices were very reasonable, the portion size more than adequate and the bartender was debonair and OH so handsome!!!\r \r The Takoyaki and Fried Brie Cheese Tempura are a MUST TRY. We also had the salmon salad, sashimi set and hot sake, all of which I'd order again on my next visit. Two thumbs way up for WANN! I will most certainly be back!!! VS more

Uninspired 6/22/2009

After reading all the glowing reviews on Citysearch, I was excited to try Wann. My husband and I have been to all the other Japanese restaurants up and down Belltown-- and there are many! Unfortunately, the food is not nearly as exciting as some have suggested. Yes, there were a few untraditional choices, such as fried octopus rounds and dried squid tempura. But even those were bland and uninspired. In fact, the dried squid tempura was more like, greasy onion rings without any flavor, not onion, not squid. The kurobota ""gourmet"" pork sausage? Exactly like Oscar Mayer wieners! The more usual menu items, such as sushi rolls and sashimi, were good but perfunctory. I'm surprised that we were flanked by two tables of young japanese-speaking patrons - perhaps exchange students there for all-day Happy Hour? Overall, if you run out of cheap happy hour eats, Wann is worth trying once. But if you're looking for creative or sublime japanese food, this definitely ain't it. Pros: All day Happy Hour on Mondays Cons: Lackluster food more

Do not eat here if you expect to be treated like a human being 2/16/2009

Worst Restaurant Experience of my life.\r \r I had a reservation for 2 on Saturday night at 7 PM. My girlfriend and I arrived at 6:30 and check to see if we could get in early. The restaurant was half empty and the hostess said it would be no problem. She sat us at our table and we began to check out the menu. Meanwhile the 3 tables next to ours were seated 5 minutes later, 10 minutes later, and 14 minutes later. All three of those tables place drink orders before I'm able to flag down a busser.\r \r I politely ask, ""Do you know when we'll be able to order""\r \r He responds, ""I'll go ask your server.""\r \r I'm still okay with the whole situation so far, and I'm confident the busser will find our mildly slow waitress. Then the tables right next to us (literally 5 feet away) all put their orders in with their waitress. So I waved at their waitress and she waved and smiled back and then walked away! At this point I was becoming concerned. I try to wave down the busser that was going to inform my server we were still waiting, but he refused to make eye contact and walked by our table without ever acknowledging me.\r \r I cannot comment on the food, because I was so upset that we just walked out. 30 minutes after we were seated, three tables next to ours were people eating their dinners while I was just sitting there sipping on my water.\r \r I do not under any circumstances recommend this place, and I cannot see anyone that does eat here actually leaving a tip of any kind because the wait staff is incredibly pretentious and too stuck up to even help out a patron of their restaurant.\r \r more

Shifty Service Charges! Do Not Eat Here. 11/30/2008

I've been coming here regularly for a couple years since this place opened. Even though the service has been highly erratic and sometimes awful, i've been loyal to this place b/c i like the food...until now. \r \r Last night, My friend and I went to happy hour right before closing and ordered our usual favorites. During our meal, we weren't offered any water and were not checked up on, so I actually got up to get a pitcher of water to fill my cup. It didn't bother me too much, it was late and I'm used to sub-par service.\r \r Then the bill comes, there is a service charge for 18%. Hrmm...that's odd, I've never seen that before. So I'm thinking they've started instituting some mandatory 18% gratuity for late night:\r \r Me: Is this a new late night policy for happy hour?\r Manager: umm..no.\r Me: Oh..was it b/c I ordered kind of late? ..or is it just something special for me (kidding)?\r Manager: it's there because of YOU.\r \r At this point, I thought she was joking and going to bust out some punchline, but she wasn't.\r \r Me: Are you serious?\r Manager: Yes, some of our staff said you don't take care of them.\r \r I've been coming to this joint for years. I've put up with your poor service and have recommended tons of people to eat here and you throw it back at me? So I dated a waitress a few years back that imparted me the value of service and tipping, so I at least try to tip 15% at all instances. Servers have it rough, she'd tell me. Okay, understood. I've only tip under 15% once at Wann (over 100+ visits). It was the time when I found bits of plastic in my salad, a dish we ordered was not brought out, and we had empty glasses of water for most of the night [note: it was slow night] -- apparently the waitress working that night was working this night too. \r \r As a loyal customer of a restaurant, I would think I would be afforded some benefit of the doubt. I mean, I come to this freakin' place almost every week. Well, never again. Not anymore. Wann, You stink! Pros: food Cons: price, service, service, service more

Izakaya = JapaneseTapas Galore ............... 7/1/2008

Do you like to relax, unwind and enjoy Japanese food?? Wann Izakaya is your answer !!!\r I recently took a couple of guests who were in from the Homeland(JAPAN) and they really enjoyed the food and the setting there. We went in on a Saturday night around 7 p.m. .... about 30 guests dining and another 10 or so at th Bar. The ones dining were mostly young couples .... a very nice setting with dim lights to get in the mood. The food .... oh so GOOD !!!! The 3 of us ate 12 different dishes ..... try the TAKOYAKI and the GODZILLA ROLL. Wann Izakaya = Great Food - Money Well Spent. Don't miss out !!! Pros: Food - Service - Setting Cons: Parking more

Bring your own flashlight 5/11/2008

We ate here for dinner and there was hardly enough lighting to read the menu or see what we were eating! It's literally like eating in the dark. So I recommend bringing your own flashlight (I say it with sarcasm, but seriously there needs to be more light). Our waitress was slow and it took us forever to get her attention for anything. I had to remind the assistant servers to get our waitress many many times but I don't think they were relaying our message. Eventually, I had to get up and walk up to her and tell her that we wanted service (note, the restaurant was 1/2 empty). She was not the brightest waitress either when it came to paying for our bill with separate credit cards.\r \r I give it 3 stars because the food was good and our orders came pretty quickly. I would give the service 1/2 a star. Maybe next time I'll go during the day when there's enough light so I can see my food. Pros: Good food Cons: Horrible service, not enough light, and did I mention how horrible the service is? more

Excellent food! 4/17/2008

We went last weekend and were blown away by the food here. We arrived at around 6:30pm on Saturday, no need for reservations. Nice restaurant, not a pub style place at all. Beef tataki and tempura brie were just amazing! Really refined, elegant dishes. Everything we ordered was fanastic. I really hope this place sticks around for a while. Our waitress was very nice. We had to wait a little bit to order, so when our bill arrived she stated that because of that, our drinks were on the house, which was a nice touch. We will definitely be back. Had 5 dishes plus dessert, was around $50. Hope you get a chance to try this place! Pros: Food, Service, Belltown location more

Absolutely great place to relax, have some good food and drinks. 12/1/2007

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Seattle. The service is great and the food has been excellent. There are a variety of non traditional dishes here, from Kobe beef tongue, to Salmon roe stuffed fried fish. They have a variety of sakes, and a Japanese styke vodka called Shochu. The ambience is absolutely relaxng. I would highly recommend this restaurant, for anyone in the mood to try some great japanese food. Pros: Great food, ambience, service and drinks. Cons: Can't think of any really. more

Authentic 9/7/2007

Great food...my favorite is the beef tataki! The prices are very reasonable, especially for being in Belltown. I talked to one of the managers and found out that the chefs are all from Japan and don't speak English (I'm not sure how much more authentic you can get than that). Great decor, service varies depending on who you get, and the presentation is amazing. Pros: happy hour, beef tataki more
