I dropped in on this joint last month on the saturday with the flooding and storms,,,,April 11 or the 18 I think. I was trying to get across 45 to Pappas, but was there was flooding on the access road and accidents everywhere. So I decided to try this place. First thing I noticed was few cars and a restaurant that was almost empty....You definitely did NOT have to go on a list like you do at Pappas. That was my first sign that this place might not be up to snuff.....Waitress was listless and distracted. I ordered oysters on the half shell and fried shrimp. The second sign of approaching trouble was when she came and unloaded several dishes of food,,,,not the food I ordered!!!!! But we got through that and my oyster appetizers were finally brought to me.
I eat lots of oysters, so I know what fresh oysters look like, but these definitely looked strange. Rather than the shiny surface appearance of a ""just shucked"" oyster,, these had a ""glazed"" unshiny surface, like the glazed eye of a dead animal. My first bite exploded the foul flavor in my mouth that told me I'd best expectorate this filth out real fast. I half expected to find a maggot in my mouth. So a few minutes and the waitress returns with my main meal. She did not even comment that I had not eaten 11 of the 12 oysters on ice. Third sign this place was a looser was when I took first bite of the fried shrimp. Again, it was very very hot,,,clearly just out of the frying vat, but had the unmistakeable taste of really not being fresh. I don't know if the cooks know it or not, but if you take spoiled shrimp, batter it good with sauces and flour and cook the hell out of it in super hot grease, it is still going to taste spoiled. I did eat the first shrimp, but no more. Fortunately, I did not get sick. So I tried the cole slaw,,,,,it was warm and tasted funny, like it had been made long ago and not kept at the proper temperature to discourage microbial growth. So after spending $20+ bucks,,,no tip by the way, I had the pleasure of chewing and spiting out one oyster, and eating one fried shrimp. After that, I got up and left the place with the rest of the meal pretty much intact.
As untouched as my plates were, I only hope they did not serve them to someone else. In the past I have returned to restaurants that were good, fair or merely mediocre. This restaurant is in a class by itself and I can confidently say I'll never return to this place.
