Utopia Salon & Spa

My wedding was near Utopia so my wedding party and I had our hair and makeup done there 4 yrs ago. Kendal did my hair and it was amazing! We were all happy (and all had diff. stylists). My bff lives in N'Ville so started going there after the wedding. I live 1/2 hr away and have been paying over $200 at a salon in Birmingham. I decided that was ridiculous, especially after I found out how much my friend was paying at Utopia. I'm SO GLAD I SWITCHED salons and started going to Utopia. They do just as good a job and charge a lot less! Jessie and Angela do my hair and BONUS...Angela does awesome makeup too! She did my makeup for my class reunion and honestly, I have never felt more beautiful! You have to check it out! BTW did I mention how architecturally beautiful this place is?? I booked my whole wedding party there for my wedding in October. Kendal did my hair and Angela did my makeup. I have never looked so good. They are very talented there and my whole wedding party looked amazing!!! KendaL did the best up-do for my special day and Angela was just great to make me look flawless. I highly recommend this place for anyone who is getting married. This spa will organize everything for u. No Stress to get everyone finished on time. If u want great talent go to this salon. I did all my x-mas shopping there and everything was on sale not to mention the great prices.They even wrapped my gifts for me. That was a plus!!! I recently booked an appointment at Utopia for a trial up-do for my wedding. The girl on the phone mentioned that I would get to have a pretty up-do for the day. The stylist created an attractive up-do, but I wasn't sure if it was what I wanted. The stylist proceeded to take down my style. I stopped her and asked what she was doing; I wanted to wear the style. She told me "wedding hair is special" and "you're not leaving with your wedding style". I argued that I was paying for an up-do and was planning to try on my dress, show my bridesmaids, etc. She joked that her assistant would "tackle me" at the door if I tried to leave with it. After 3 phone calls to the salon, the owner finally got on the phone and rudely told me there must have been a "mis-communication". She said she was not there to see what happened and did not apologize or empathize. Eventually, she offered to re-do the style. If this is how they handle unhappy customers, I would never recommend this salon to a friend. Pros: Nice Atmopshere Cons: Bad Customer Service more

This is the WORST salon that I've even been to! I had an all-day package and every treatment was a disappointment. The layout of the spa is anything but relaxing....the massage room is underneath stairs so I constantly heard "click, click, click" the entire time. Also, the hair washing bowls are located above the facial room so I heard water going thru the pipes the entire duration of my facial. Manicure/pedicure was ok, but polish starting chipping the next day. My make-up application was sloppy at best, I couldn't believe it. Did she not see the clumpy mascara? The best for last.....was supposed to have a wash/blow dry at end of day (would have been nice since my hair was greasy after massage/facial) and the stylist left and wasn't left with any other option!?!?!? i WENT TO UTOPIA FOR A PEDICURE WITH A GIFT CERTIFICATE. IT WAS FINE, NOTHING EXCEPTIONAL, ON DEC. 31,2008. ON THE BLACKBOARD - IN THE RECEPTION AREA WAS A SIGN THAT READ: SPECIAL ON SALE 3 DIFFERENT SPA SPECIALS: SWEDISH MESSAGE - PEDICURE-FACIAL. I BOUGHT THE PACKAGE FOR A FRIEND. SHE WENT TO USE IT AND WAS TOLD IT WAS ONLY ON SPECIAL FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER. WHICH MEANT I WOULD HAVE HAD TO USE IT THAT AFTERNOON. STUPID! MY GIRLFRIEND WENT TO GET HER SERVICE AND COULD ONLY RECEIVE 2 OF THE 3. $150.00 SPECIAL - I DON'T THINK SO - THAT WAS A RIP & I'M EMBARRASSED. I SHOULD BE REIMBURSED OR SHE SHOULD BE ABLE TO COME BACK AND GET HER OTHER SPECIAL. I absolutley love Utopia! I am new into town, so the thought of going to a new hairstylist was very scary to me because i had been seeing the same stylist for 10 years, but i decided to give it a try. So I called up there to book an appointment and spoke with Mishleen, who was just about the sweetest person ever! She went over prices with me and we decided that the level Marissa was at was in my budget. So I went in for my appointment and was warmly welcomed by my new stylist Marissa. She introduced herself with a big smile and brought me to her chair. I won't lie, I was somewhat nervous because she is young,22, but that all went away when i sat and I explained my story and how nervous I was, but she quickly put me at ease. She went over my color and cut and offered something a little different than what I had that she said would look better with my skin tone, face shape, etc. And oh My godness It was stunning!!! My color and cut was the best it has ever looked. She did an amazing job and she was so friendly and she made me feel like a million bucks. At the end she explained what products I needed and I bought all of them and I know she wasnt trying to sell it just to make money, she was really trying to help me and thats what i loved the most. Unfortunately I did not receive great service from Utopia. While the facilities are beautiful and the spa seems promising, the salon was subpar. I called the salon and asked for a very experienced stylist to work on my hair. The receptionist gave me an appointment with Sebastian. The hair color and cut I received were not satisfactory. He was in over his head and I felt like he did not know what he was doing. The highlights he gave me were so ill placed that I left the salon with an inch of root still showing. When he was done, I voiced my disdain. At this point he asked another stylist what he should do to correct his work. She told him what he should have done instead originally, but then told me it looked good and that I should be happy with the work. She pressured to accept the botched job. Additionally, my hair cut was terrible. When I got home, I noticed one side of my hair was over an inch longer than the other!! Needless to say, I will not be back. I don't even feel confortable enough to go back to the salon for someone to correct the work. Pros: Great atmosphere, the spa services sound nice. Cons: Inexperienced stylists who do not know what they are doing!!! more
