Not great. 7/30/2011

This restaurant was recommended to us and the reviews were quite good so we thought we'd drive the 33 miles to eat here. It so wasn't worth it. It was primarily fried foods. The kids menu was just ok. While our waiter was very friendly, the service seemed quite slow. I was actually quite surprised that smoking was still allowed. Had I known that, we definitely wouldn't have gone. The food was just ok. The waiter recommened the most expensive dishes on the menu and they weren't that great. I would suggest passing this one up & go to Kemah, even if it's crowded. more

Food 4/5; Ambience 5/5; Service 5/5, Price 3.5 - 4/5 4/27/2011

My wife had eaten at Topwater with other family members and wanted to share it with me tonight, ariving after 8 PM. We were very pleased. A higher proportion of the dishes were more dressed up than I prefer, and I wish they would have been able to obtain larger oyster's than is possible currently (but that is like complaining about the weather). Our waiitress was very informative and frank, the service was excellent, and other staff were very pleasant. We selected large appetizers and large dinners, and left quite full and very happy. The only Texas Seafood place I've liked better is S & D Oyster Bar in Dallas. Excellent saltwater seafood is not available for a $ or $$ price. more

Horrible Service 12/21/2010

We attended a company party there today, paid $12 per person for a buffet. When we arrived there were two tables: one with food and one with plates and silverware. After finishing the first plate, we asked the waitress if we should use our plate when we return to the line or get a new one. The waitress told us to get a new one. The table no longer had plates or silverware and the waitress (the same waitress that told us to get new plates) informed us that she wasn't allowed to bring anymore out because ""the hostess"" said she couldn't. She did, however, bring out more silverware. We could also hear the staff complaining about the amount of food they were serving. There were people that were arriving late that were turned away even though they'd paid for the party as well. Once home, we called to speak with a manager, who sarcastically apologized and clearly was not interested in customer satisfaction. We will NOT be returning. more

Get Ready To Have Your Chance 8/22/2009

We drove by Topwater Grill a couple of weeks ago, and they are rebuilding, following the devastation of Hurricane Ike from last year. They already have the exterior done, and are working on the interior. My guess is that they may be open again, in time for the Galveston Mortorcycle Rally, Oct. 31st, 2009! We are so happy they are rebuilding! What a great gem of a seafood restaurant this was; and now it's going to be even better! Pros: Authentic, Fresh Seafood from the Gulf Cons: Kinda' Hidden in San Leon. But ask locals; you'll find it! more

Loved the atmosphere 7/13/2008

We have eaten here on several occasions. The service has always been very good. the only real complaint I have is that the food is not seasoned very much. I do love the location on the water and have sat inside, on the patio and on the dock. They are kinda pricey for the food you get so we generally do not go very often. Maybe 3 times a year. Pros: parking, location Cons: price more

Relaxed ambience, great food 7/6/2008

Use MapQuest! It's an unassuming looking wooden building, with no signage viewable from the street. We were given our choice of tables...inside under the a/c, on the open air covered patio, or on the open deck, next to the water. We chose the deck and had no unfortunate seagull incidents. The deck was in shade and the breeze off the bay was wonderful. Boats can pull right up to the deck and tie up. We were seated within moments of our arrival and as soon as we were seated there was someone to take our drink orders. I chose a draft beer which was good and cold and my husband had iced tea which was fresh brewed and served with plenty of ice. When our drinks were served we were ready to order. I had the Malibu Coconut Shrimp which was served with jalapeno hushpuppies, french fries and shrimp cole slaw. My husband chose the seafood plate with shrimp and fried fish that came with the same side orders as mine. We were served in a timely manner and the food was really good. The shrimp was fresh and well flavored, crisp and hot and were accompanied with a mango habanero sauce. The sauce was the perfect combination of sweet mango and pepper. The jalapeno hushpuppies were excellent., crisp on the outside and a with a subtle jalapeno flavor . The shrimp cole slaw was cold and the cabbage crisp and wonderfully flavored. The french fries had a slightly spicy coating and were fried perfectly, not too greasy and crisp to bite into. The fried fish was crisp and flavorful. Our waiter was properly attentive. The total was more than we spend at our favorite Mexican restaurant but the ambience, people watching opportunities, good service and large portions of good food made it well worth what we paid. We were there on a Sunday evening and most of the patio and deck tables were occupied. with mostly locals which is usually a good indicator that a restaurant is consistent in service and quality of food. We will be back to see if that holds true in this case. Pros: Easy to park, good food and service more

Freshest Seafood, without the generic commercial taste 5/8/2007

My fiance and I were looking for a place to enjoy a nice relaxing meal without having to deal with all the commercial restaruant traffic. She searched through the yellow pages and really couldn't find anything that looked appealing. She then jumped online and found all the reviews about this place. So we dicided to give it a try. The restaraunt is tucked away from the rest of the world in a secluded location right on the bay. No city traffic, or having to park a mile away and walk. When we got there, the waiter sat us and then handed us a menu. He stated that there were about 100 items on the menu and if that wasn't enough, there were another 300 ideas in his head. I was really impressed with his knowledge of food and flavors. He had recommended the Blackened Swordfish with a lobster cream sauce!!! Just the sound of it made my mouth water! We both ordered that and some blue crab chowder for an apetizer. Before we were done licking the bowl clean, our entres had arrived. Very quick service!! The food was phenominal!! Being an avid fishermen, i can taste the difference in the type and quality of any fish! I was very impressed how fresh and flavorful the entire meal was. The lobster cream sauce was a great compliment to the swordfish! We polished off the evening with some of thier homeade deserts that were absolutely to die for! Great scenery, great prices, casual atmosphere, outstanding food quality, and overall just a very enjoyable experience!! I highly recommend this place to anyone!! more

Terrible Service By The Bay 4/7/2007

I had been going to this place for a very long time. I went there before the patio was covered, back before the chaires with the Marlins cut out of the back. I had always liked this place. I decided to take my mother there for an early Easter Lunch. The service was terrible. This is not new. The last time I went there the service was bad. Last year I noticed that the quality of the food was not what it use to be. I decided to give them anothr try. We waited for an hour before our meal arrived. They wer very slow on refilling mine and my mothers ice tea class. The waiter would disapear and we would not see him for a long time. My stuffed flounder was not cook consistantly though. Some parts of the flounder were warm orther were cold. The vegitibles were cold. Terrilble service and mediocer food. I will not return. more

Great food; nice service 3/26/2007

We came by here one lazy, cold Sunday afternoon and had several plates of their baked Oysters Rockefeller and Oysters Au Gratin, along with a cold beer or two. It's a simple little place that's hidden in the outskirts of San Leon, right at the water's edge on Galveston Bay. But they put out really fresh seafood at reasonable prices, and have really good service. You won't find this excellent combo at any Landry's restaurant. This is the real deal, served from the Gulf, to your plate. Pros: Fresh seafood from the Gulf Cons: Hart to find location more

Best fish and shrimp tacos on the bay 3/2/2007

Been there many times. Food is great. Get the fish or shrimp tacos. Staf is friendly. Its like out of a Jimmy Buffett song. Get there early enough to see the sunset and enjoy the light as it goes to dusk. It is another world from the concrete city to the north. Pros: View, Food, Service, Music more

WORTH THE DRIVE! 8/29/2006

Thank goodness for Mapquest or I would have never found this place! Pros: Great food, great service and nice view of the bay Cons: It takes me an hour to get there... : ) more

Great Everything 5/15/2006

My boyfriend and I love this place. Perfect evening for great food, great atmosphere and great service. We also love when they have live music! The people that work there seem to really enjoy their job, no matter how busy they get (and they do get busy on the weekends). We recommend this place to everyone! more
