Greenlawn 2/19/2011

Greenlawn Memorial Park has been providing for the needs of families since 1937. We are proud of the reputation we have established during almost 75 years of service to our community. The first thing you will notice upon entering the grounds at Greenlawn is the natural beauty of dogwoods and crepe myrtle as well as centuries old live oaks and other mature trees of various species. The pond at the center of the memorial park serves as a focal point for our annual interdenominational Easter Sunrise Service which has been a Greenlawn tradition for over 50 years. For those families who prefer other than in-ground interment, our Mausoleum provides the ultimate in above-ground entombment. Constructed of the finest domestic and imported marble, the Mausoleum was the first in the Columbia area and is still unmatched in its richness of detail and striking beauty. The Mausoleum Chapel, constructed as a wing of the mausoleum itself, is available for services in conjunction with funerals at Greenlawn. Niches for cremation urns are an integral part of the mausoleum, an excellent choice for a permanent memorialization. One of the most important aspects of our service at Greenlawn is perpetual care. Families are assured of the lasting beauty of Greenlawn by our commitment to provide the finest maintenance in perpetuity. This everlasting care is guaranteed through our contribution of a specified percentage of income to an irrevocable trust, which by law assures the on-going care and beauty of our facilities. A key element in our success in providing unsurpassed service through the years has been our ability to make arrangements for many families before the time of need. Consider for a moment the emotional stress of losing a loved one. It is precisely for this reason that approximately ninety percent of funerals at Greenlawn during recent years have been arranged for prior to the death of the family member. Our staff stands ready to assist at any time, but we strongly recommend that arrangements be made in advance for the sake of your family and your own peace of mind. In May of 1998 our services expanded to include a conveniently located, modern funeral home facility. Greenlawn Funeral Home serves families all over the Midlands. Our funeral home is conveniently located adjacent to Greenlawn Memorial Park on Leesburg Road and also convenient to Fort Jackson, just one exit north on Interstate 77. Our funeral home offers a variety of funeral options including both traditional options as well as cremation. It is our desire to make every funeral or memorial service a personal time of remembrance to capture, share and preserve your special memories of life. At Greenlawn, we are proud of our pioneering efforts in making special packages available for veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States. Special discounts for veterans are just one of the ways we recognize the contributions of those who have served our country. Considerable savings can also be realized for non-veterans as well for arrangements made prior to the time of need. All of us at Greenlawn take pride in being a part of a Columbia institution that has maintained the original principles upon which we were founded. Our philosophy has been and remains a simple one. We put the needs and desires of the family above all else. That is why service is still our watchword. During our almost 75 years of service, we have learned much about our business and about the communities in and around Columbia. We look forward to building our tradition for another 75 years and beyond. more

Where do they find their employees? 5/3/2010

I received a call from an african american man who sounded extremely ghetto on the phone. He wanted to schedule a time to meet with us to arrange my mother's funeral plans. Aside from his grammar, everything seemed ok so we scheduled a time to come to the place. As soon as we got there, we waited while he stood and talked to someone in the lobby, laughing and carrying on as if he was in a mall rather than a funeral parlor. We still tried to give him a chance. Once we got into the severely outdated looking "conference room" we were subjected to the most unpolished and incompetent attitude I've ever seen from someone. He's one of the best- and he will be the first to tell you. After about 10 minutes, we asked to speak with a manager and he claimed he was the funeral home's regional manager and was actually thinking about purchasing the funeral home. I didn't see a for sale sign out in the front, nor did I feel like I could listen to this load of garbage coming from this idiot's mouth. We immediately called another funeral home that we should have gone to in the first place. They picked mother up from the hospital and arranged a highly polished service and the director was one of the most well spoken people I've met in Columbia. Thank God that we did not let Greenlawn and their employees get their hands on mom's body, no telling what could have happened. One star- due to the fact that this funeral home (I'm thinking it is a corporate funeral home) seems to have no interest in hiring employees who have the ability to complete a sentence successfully. Pros: transparent idiot was easy to see through Cons: everything- don't use this place more

I don't know how they could be more insensitive 6/28/2008

Because my parents purchased their plots together, we were committed to Greenlawn. Susie, the salesperson, should be hawking used cars for all the sensitivity she has. As my Dad and I sat across from her, her push was for us to purchase Daddy's service and memorial plaque and everything else that she could add on to get as absolutely as much money as possible. She had no regard for my Father's feelings. She certainly did not understand that I DID NOT want to discuss my Father's death three days after my Mother's funeral. While I understand that it is a business, Dunbar Funeral Home handled the "business" of a death with dignity and sensitivity. Greenlawn mainly concerned with scalping the customers. The cemetary is not cared for well, and family members regularly care for their plots because they otherwise fall into disrepair. I wish we had spent more money and had found a nicer memorial garden for my Mother. Cons: It's like having PayDay Loans plan a funeral more
