No more expensive than Texas Road House. Wanna know the perks? Better steaks and no children running around.

Best Valentine's Day Ever 8/8/2010

I cannot believe the guy who worte such poor things even went to The Veranda on Valentine's Day. I did, and they had music, table decorations, wall decorations, and hand printed M&M's for both my husband and I when we received the bill. We were also told up front, before making the reservation about the menu, the gratuity, and that coupons were not accepted. I'm not sure where this guy went, but it couldn't have been The Veranda. My husband and I will be returning for many Valentine's Days to come! more

Grotesquely Overpriced, Mediocre on a Good Day... 2/13/2010

My wife and I visited The Veranda for their $75 per person Valentine's 6-course meal. This was was without a doubt one of the worst price to value offerings I've been subjected to over the years, and we always splurge on special occasions for something that comes highly recommended. Unfortunately, I can not say that the Veranda deserves its reputation. At $20 a plate I might consider it average. And it wasn't just the food. For Valentine's you expect their to be a few little extras, but their were none. No special music, minimal decor, no rose for my Valentine...nothing. The Food: This was a fixed menu since it was a holiday, but even on a fixed menu you expect to have one or two options for each course. The only course that had options was the entree. The appetizer was curried chicken with stale crackers which tasted oddly like tuna fish out of a can. The salad was roasted duck on spring greens, which was average but nothing to write home about. The Intermezzo was a berry sorbet which tasted quite a bit like something from Sam's Club's frozen food aisle. The Entrees: The salmon was pretty fresh but flavorless, and the steak was cooked well but didn't seem to have been marinated in anything, palatially boring. The Dessert, which we were looking forward to the most, was also the most disappointing. The raspberry cheesecake was DEFINITELY store bought and just thawed out, while the chocolate eruption cake was fresher but nothing more substantial that something you might find at Chili's. Adding to our disappointment was the bill. When we initially asked about the Valentine's package, we were quoted $75 per person, but were not told about the mandatory 20% gratuity on holidays, which doesn't make sense since, if anything, the waitress is not having to work as hard with a fixed menu (no special requests or recommendations needed). Also, they refused to accept our restaurant . com gift certificate because it was a ""holiday offering."" I've come across this before, but since the Valentine's package is MORE expensive than every other night, one might assume that they would be more inclined to accept it (by the way this was not listed in the terms and conditions of the certificate). All in all, very disappointing. The food we had on a recent Royal Caribbean cruise ship was actually better, and we only paid about $75 per person, per DAY for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and all entertainment on board. Needless to say we will not be returning to the Veranda. Pros: Music Cons: Everything else more

Houston's Most Romantic! 1/12/2010

My husband and I are not originally from Texas, so our number one activity is to explore the town we live in. While we are currently residing in Houston, the outskirts of the city include a peaceful and serence location called Kingwood. Inside this community lies the most fantastic restaurant! The Veranda looks like an old Victorian house - complete with a rocking chair and a porch swing. Once inside, however, the quaintness boiled down to reveal candlelit tables, gold plates, and a baby grand piano. Music is there nightly, and it was a pleasant surprise to find it was more background melodies than deafening tones. The musicians are also the owners, and apparently one is a photographer - the portrait by our table was a gorgeous bride - undoubtedly a native Texan (she wore a cowboy hat). The food was exquisite - and not at all what we had expected! Normally when we go out, we pay 30 dollars for a steak - and thats what we get - a steak. However at the Veranda, not only did we pay less than $30 for the Filet Mignon, it came with asparagus AND potatoes! Needless to say, we gorged, and have yet to feel any guilt. It was absolutely the most romantic restaurant in Houston and I can't wait to go back!!! Pros: romantic atmosphere more

A Hidden Treasure! 6/3/2004

What a treat - fantastic food and wonderful entertainment when the owners are behind the keyboard and singing! A hidden treasure in the far NE Houston area. more

Exquisite dining! 12/13/2002

One of the finest eateries around the northeast quadrant of Houston's metro area. Fantastic ambience and decor; service is first-rate. Try the grilled onions and roundsteak businessman's lunch: at $12.95 a bit pricey, but worth every cent. You'll be back! more
