Best

I love it here. This is definitely one of my favorite Hollywood spots and I try to frequent the club with friends as much as possible! This is really a great spot...you just need ...

Worst

The view is great. That's what this place definately has going for it. The service is slow and not all that great. Problem is the crowd. There's a ton of tourists and the rest are...

highly recommended 7/16/2002

I highly recommend this hotel. If you are looking for something different, something fun, and better than the average hotel, this is the place. The decor is very modern and hip, unlike all of the chain hotels. The Standard has a lot of energy and the staff provides good service. There is a DJ that spins records in the lobby and the bar pool always open. The rooms are a good size and almost every room has a balcony with a beautiful view. Esp. since it is located on Sunset Blvd. The only thing missing is a gym. more

What a View!! 7/11/2002

I personally love downtown. Its the only place in this city that reminds me that we live in a city. I like the Standard Roof Bar; its a great addition. Not as fun as the Ciudad Bar Area, but, definitely worth a try. My only dislike was the 310 and 818 newbies that have never venture to Downtown and suddenly they think its cool. Once this place cools off a little, I think it'll be better. Pros: View, View, Ambiance Cons: Tired People more

The Standard is Under-rated by Ctysrch 7/5/2002

After reading these reviews, was worried about my stay at The Standard. Found everything (except the antiseptic smell and the Hollywood "wannabe"-types) to be untrue: friendly and helpful staff, large room (Rm 129 on first floor), quiet and clean, and very inexpensive. My tolerance level for noise and rudeness may be a result of my living in Manhattan for 5 years; having said that, I think that The Standard delivers what it promises: central location & good value. You can't expect more for only $135 per night. P.S. I highly recommend the 24/7 diner there, as well. Pros: great value, location, hip, not staid Cons: antiseptic smell, lighting, rough sheets more

Shagadelic 7/2/2002

The place is happening and the decor is definitely groovy (gotta love the water beds!). However, if you think drinks in Hollywod are expensive, try paying 11 DOLLARS for a simple Long Island! Other than this, no complains...definitely a great place to bring a date, or just to chill with a group of friends. Pros: good ambiance, decor, people Cons: crowded, expensive more

Great but bring lotsa $$$ 7/1/2002

The last time I was here was last year, but I had a pretty decent time. I like the whole futuristic look and lounge feel, plus the person in the aquarium was a very innovative concept. But you better be prepared to shell out some hard-earned money for drinks. I bought a martini for around $15 and the waitresses really waited until you gave them your tip. Much more fun if you bring a lot of friends with you. Pros: Great Atmosphere, Decent Crowd, Fun with Friends Cons: Expensive Parking, Expensive Drinks, Slow Service more

Nice View 7/1/2002

Getting a close view of downtown LA skyscrapers while sipping on a martini was a different experience. The decor for this place is fun, red, and trendy. The people at this place were mostly professionals. Lots of older folks trying to look young. Pros: View Cons: Parking more

Cool on Wednesdays 7/1/2002

It's the typical Hollywood crowd on Sunset. It's expensive to park and drink but the decor is VERY NICE. I love the swings and couches by the door. Great place to see stars like Mark Walhberg, Matthew Perry, JC from N'Sync, etc. It's all about the guest list. It's tough to get in so get there early. more

This place is dope - period 6/28/2002

The view of downtown is worth the visit alone, an experience you don't expect to see in LA and yet you wonder why no one thought of it before. The design is great, it's a great place to hang with a big group of friends, and the design (the fireplace, the waterbeds!) is great. Just what downtown needs, a cool part of the city not enough people check out) Pros: view, design, open space Cons: getting too popular more

a little played out 6/28/2002

this bar is on it's last leg. it is getting kinda played out - or at least the people are. if you are looking for trendy decor they have it. if you are looking for upscale people, well keep looking. the bar was pleasant and enjoyable when it first opened, but the secret it out and it's no longer a hidden treasure. overall its an okay bar to go to, but in a couple of months it will probably be old news. more

The place to spot celebrities during the week. One of the few bars that allows smoking. The decor is funky/contemporary with crowds well suited for it. more

Always Stay Here 6/16/2002

I really like staying at the Standard. The staff members are always friendly and I like the spacious rooms. Room service menu is nice too. The hotel would be perfect sans the wanna be crowd but other than that, it's always a pleasant stay. Pros: Great pool, Great rooms, Good menu Cons: No workout facility, The customers, The bar prices more

The standard of sadness 6/13/2002

The Standard defines what sucks about LA. Traffic to get there, expensive parking at every turn, a huge line, a cover, arrogant, self-important nobodies acting like they are soooooo trendy. Barf. If wanna-be trendy and hip is your bag, you'll love it. If you're a good ol' down-to-earth human being who doesn't care for transparent trendiness, skip it. Pros: view Cons: people, crowd, parking more

Drinks by the Pool 6/12/2002

Relaxing scene for drinks out by the pool. One of the few places in L.A. to get dressed up and still find a relaxed atmosphere. Pros: Ambience Cons: Parking more

The Pool Rocks but... 6/12/2002

The hotel is basic, hence the name, but is trendy and filled with a lot of wanna-be Hollywood types. Martinis are steep and I think I dropped like $400 in about 2 hours....OUCH! But adter all that...I would stille recommend - it was fun. more

You're gonna pay $10 a drink anyway 6/5/2002

If you're gonna pay $10 for a drink anyway, you might as well go to the bar at The Standard. They've got a nice outdoor area around the pool with a gorgeous view of LA. And if you're going to stay in LA and pay top dollar, why not stay here as well. It's more like a boutique hotel than many of the other establishments on Sunset. The accommodations are "standard" luxury (pardon the pun) with a modern minimalist feel, but comfortable and realxing when you have a room with a view over the pool. more

Editorial
  • The all-American diner gets an L.A. makeover at this hotel haunt where beaded curtains replace blinds and hard liquor spikes milk and coffee. Not unlike many a hungover guest, this 24-hour trendoid mecca is ghostly during daylight. But things heat up at night when runway-model waitresses serve hungry clubgoers international comfort food like Croque Monsieur, a French-style grilled cheese with ham and Gruyere on rustic bread. Burgers come with skin-on shoestring fries while ahi tuna tartare and butternut squash soup are other belly fillers for after-hours food fiends looking to sober up.
