Best

I love it here. This is definitely one of my favorite Hollywood spots and I try to frequent the club with friends as much as possible! This is really a great spot...you just need ...

Worst

The view is great. That's what this place definately has going for it. The service is slow and not all that great. Problem is the crowd. There's a ton of tourists and the rest are...

Suprisingly good 8/12/2002

Breakfast at The Standard Coffee Shop is a consistently good value. Service is prompt. The food is excellent. Try a smoothie. I strongly recommend remembering to have your parking validated though. The validation will save you more than the cost of your meal. Pros: great food, opens early Cons: valet parking a must more

A great vista! 8/12/2002

What a nice change of pace! If you go around 7:00, you still get an hour or so of daylight and can watch the sunset amid the downtown buildings. The DJ was awesome and the scene is very happening. The parking at their lot is $10 bucks - would recommend finding a different place to park. Pros: great view, great scene Cons: expensive parking more

A Must See View 8/9/2002

Reminicent of "Bladerunner" without the rain. Very cool views, with all the tall buildings around you, you forget that you are in downtown LA. Nice looking pool that contained a few naked people. Wanted to try out the waterbed pods but they were too crowded while we were there. A great place to take out-of-towners who are convinced that down LA has nothing to offer. Pros: friendly wait staff, stiff drinks, great amosphere Cons: parking, could be a wait, driving downtown more

Believe most of the hype 8/9/2002

The Standard is definitely a cool bar. And the prices are certainly high -- but equaled to the going rate at any nearby trendy bar on Sunset. I heard the crowd, usually populated with stars, is half the draw. But I must admit -- the purple, dark lighting makes it tough to see anyone -- hence the reason stars would go there. If you validate, valet parking is as cheap (w/tip) as nearby lot parking. And for those that want to avoid attitude at the door, get there early (before 11pm). Pros: great scene Cons: expensive more

Up high, what a let down... 8/8/2002

I was disappointed by the Roof Bar, there is no dancefloor, and the scene was very mellow. The most exciting part of the night was trying to flirt with the doormen to let us up... Pros: Stong Drinks!, Nice View, Outside... Cons: Expensive, Too Mellow, No dancing??!! more

The ''DOWNEST'' Place in Downtown 8/8/2002

It would take more than 150 words to describe all the great atributes and vibes this spot has waiting for you, so i'll just say, "I'TS ALL GOOD'! Pros: Atomsphere, City veiw, Decor Cons: Crowds more

Industry Standard 8/7/2002

Completely different vibe from the Sunset Standard. Not better-just different. Downtown is more about drinking'partying and networking, Hollywood Standard is 'let's see how much work we can get done while basking in the rays by the cooler than cool pool.' I loved it! My girlfriend and I spent 7.5 hours poolside Downtown-met all kinds of fun people! We will be there frequently I imagine ( on Friday's) Drinks are over-the-top expensive. Think PLaYScHOoL color scheme-so better plan the swimsuit accordingly. Pros: Sky Scraper views, Reasonable Parking, Good Looking Staff Cons: Spendy Drinks, Pool is Too Hot, Playschool Colors more

Had a great stay at the Standard 8/1/2002

We stayed at the Standard while in from San Francisco and thought it was great. For $125/night we had a great room that I thought was larger than most hotel rooms. Yes the drinks were pricey, but we didn't really hang out there and as for the crowd..what do you expect? My only criticism would be towards the valets... they were the only ones we had attitude from all weekend and it was fairly consistent amongst them all. I guess if you dislike your job so much you should get a new one! more

Nice Place 8/1/2002

I don't know why people complain about how expensive this place is. It's not much different then other trendy places on Sunset. Personally, I really liked this bar, and can't wait to go back. Pros: Atmosphere, Service Cons: Expensive, Parking more

Great views... 7/31/2002

Nice views of the buildings and the people....Get there early to avoid the cover....Like the other's said, drinks are pricey.... Pros: Great Scenary Cons: Pricey Drinks more

Can you get into Heaven? 7/31/2002

When the elevator doors open to the rooftop of the Standard hotel, it 's like you've landed in heaven. Rare grooves and funk are pounding on the red and white speakers; beautiful people are milling about; and the spectacular view takes your breath away. The drinks are stiff and the staff is efficient. The only thing is...can you get up there in the first place? It is a an absolute chore trying to gain entry to this bar when the joint is crowded. For those that fail or give up, the restaurant bar downstairs is not bad at all...it's like being in limbo (purgatory) though. You are still haven't made it to heaven. =) Pros: View, Good Crowd, Great Martinis Cons: Drinks are Pricey, the Wait, $20 cover charge more

Where's the Waitress 7/30/2002

I work across the street and we head over there once in a while. The view is good and so is the decor but the waitresses have a tendency to forget they are at work. Drinks can take 30 minutes with little or no crowd and often the same waitress that took your order 15 minutes ago will ask you if you have ordered. Hey try using a pen to write it down!! more

Glamorous and fun 7/30/2002

Go on a weekend night and you're almost guaranteed to spot a celbrity. Luke and Owen Wilson and Hugh Hefner himself visit from time to time. The bartenders are great and the decor is a mix of understated hip and glamorous casual. If you arrive early enough you may be lucky enough to nab one of the two swings -- just make sure not to swing too high; if you do, the bouncers will escort you to the door. Bartenders are friendly, crowd is very glamorous and cool. Pros: Cool interior Cons: Very, very crowded more

You are not New York or cool. 7/29/2002

A group of us walked up to The Standard to get a quick drink and check out the view and were turned away by the rudest people I have seen at any bar. They had a velevet rope and it was a pick and choose who you know sort of thing going on. We were appropriately dressed and all well mannered and had no way of getting in. The door girl was really obnoxious and over exaggerating her "act". I just thought it was funny that we couldnt get into a less than packed club... it was a who you know thing. I would rather not go thru my list of contacts to get into a facade. You need a load of good bars for this act - as for now its a lonely fake bar. Way to kick off the LA downtown bar scene! Pros: nice velvet rope more

Cracking the Cool Whip 7/29/2002

I watched in amazement as a bunch of young actor/model/whatevers of both genders cracked the cool whip of pretension at the poor slobs in their Dockers and Casual Corner finest hanging out in the lobby or -- god forbid! -- actually trying to check in to the hotel. HA HA It was funny -- my friend and I, both vets of the whole miserable treadmill of Drai's, Skybar, Hollywood Athletic Club, North, Blue on Blue, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., when they were hot watched in amazement as Sunset Strip staff attitude met Covina customer reality and it was really funny...actually agree that this crowd is more fun because they don;t act nearly as pretentious -- just wish the staff would be as engaging. Weak drinks, too. Three mojitos and I was way too sober. Pros: Design, Music, Real people crowd Cons: Pretentious staff, Weak drinks, Valet parking access more

great poolside ambience 7/28/2002

This is an awesome place to get drinks. Be sure to arrive early (before 9) and get some poolside chaise lounges. Cool DJ, The hilltop view is magnificent, and the people-watching is second to none. Pros: spectacular view, people watching Cons: a bit pricey more

Innovative & Chic 7/25/2002

Went there one Saturday night with my husband and had a pretty decent time. The only thing was, we didnt know that you had to pay $20 each just to get to the Roof Bar! Unless you were just content staying at the lobby and playing pool. That was fun, though, as we got to meet a lot of other people. I've been to the one in Hollywood and though the prices for drinks are the same, the martini here really packs the punch. Mostly views of buildings and not the city itself, but all in all, a must-see even once. Pros: Chic, Mixed Crowd, Strong Martinis Cons: Expensive Cover Charg, Pricey Drinks more

  • The all-American diner gets an L.A. makeover at this hotel haunt where beaded curtains replace blinds and hard liquor spikes milk and coffee. Not unlike many a hungover guest, this 24-hour trendoid mecca is ghostly during daylight. But things heat up at night when runway-model waitresses serve hungry clubgoers international comfort food like Croque Monsieur, a French-style grilled cheese with ham and Gruyere on rustic bread. Burgers come with skin-on shoestring fries while ahi tuna tartare and butternut squash soup are other belly fillers for after-hours food fiends looking to sober up.
