Absolutely horrible place 11/29/2010

How many bad things can I say about the Melting pot on the Plaza in Kansas City. the portions were miniscule, the service poor, the sauces tasted like they came from the bargain isle of the grocery store, the seafood tasted like it was borderline past it's due date, the price tag was outrageous, and then to automatically tack on an 18% gratuity with another line on the bill for ""additional tip"" was just adding insult to injury. Have avoided this scam for years but went for a friends birthday, will never again be suckered into this place more

Awesome Evening 1/26/2010

We went for our 10th wedding anniversary. It was an awesome evening. Being our first time, the waitress was wonderful in explaining what would be happening. I loved the different foods to use for dipping. I guess one should make sure they understand the concept of fondue before going as some reviews appear people had no idea what it was. We are planning on taking our daughters there for Valentines Day this year. They can't wait. Pros: Great variety, alot of fun. Cons: Pricey, but everything at the plaza is. more

VERY expensive, terrible service, boring food 3/8/2009

WORST PLACE TO DINE. I took my friend to this restaurant for a special birthday dinner. We had awful service and unimpressive food. The staff was unhelpful and acted like it was a hassle to do anything for us. The food is raw and you cook it in what tastes like a bowl of flavored water. We shared cheese and dessert fondue with the entire table and each person ordered their own entree. The cheese fondue was ok, but the bread that they gave us to dip into the cheese was a bunch of crumbs. I myself had maybe 5 pieces of tiny bread dipped into cheese, 3 pieces of chocolate fondue, a small amount of seafood for my entree and I paid $80 for my meal. I nearly fell of my chair. I don't mind paying for a great meal but it was terrible and the service was sub par. After asking why things were so pricey, the waiter proceeded to tell us that not only do you pay for the $15 for cheese, you pay per person for each bowl. This means each cheese fondue bowl cost us around $40. The menu reads $15 each, with no fine print. The waiter did not address this until after our meal. If we wanted to pay this much for our meals we would have gone to a fine dining restaurant and had a memorable meal. There are much better restaurants (two right next door) that deserve the business. Pros: Extensive wine menu Cons: Expensive, poor service, terrible food more

Terrible Service! 9/15/2008

My husband took me there for my birthday. He made a reservation over a week in advance. We sat there for 20 minutes after the time that our reservation was for! We had to ask over and over again for someone to find out what was going on. They said that they didn't have a table big enough for us and that they could sit us at a table for 2 when we had 5 people! When we finally were seated, we then got the rudest waitress you had ever seen. It was our 1st time there and she ""explained"" everything so fast that we didn't understand her. She took it upon herself to not bring my best friend's salad out to her because ""she didn't think that she would eat it"". She rolled her eyes when we asked questions. We had to ask her for something at least 2-3 times before she would even bring it out! The prices were outrageous! We could have had 3 GOOD meals for the price of the one TERRIBLE meal that we had! I do not recommend this place at all! Pros: Neat idea for a restaurant Cons: Terrible service, prices WAY too high! more

save your money 4/10/2006

if you have family from out of town and you can not come up with something this is a good answer. but for a date go to the nelson art museum or the classic cup, it would be more romantic and show how you are interested in her/him. if you live in johnson county you think of this as fun but you also like hootie and the blow fish nuff said. more

Smell like Fondue all evening! 8/4/2005

While not fans of the ""fondue experience"" my husband and I recently went to The Melting Pot with friends and had an enjoyable enough night, but that was NOT attributable to the restaurant. The atmosphere is nice enough, but there is a smell to the restaurant that doesn't exactly whet the appetite - think hot cooking oil on your stove . . . The smell aside, I can't somplain about the service which was both friendly and attentive. My underlining problem is with being expected to ""cook"" my own dinner while seated RIGHT NEXT to someone else who's trying to do the same thing. I was elbowed repeatedly and my long ""flowing"" sleeves were definitely not the right thing to wear. Be prepared to work for your dinner and smell like food for the rest of the night if you choose this restaurant. Pros: Atmosphere, Service Cons: Expensive, Small Portions, Smelly more

The Most Unique place to eat 7/8/2004

I love the attmosphere in this place. The wine cellar feel is so exciting. Ask for a private booth when making your reservations. It adds so much to the experience. The food was outstanding. Each course, while itself great, out did the previous course. Although it is a bit pricey, it is well worth the cost. more

TRY IT!!! 2/4/2003

A new splash of flavor in KC. The Melting Pot has a new twist on our boring old dinners.. Fondue! What a nice refreshing experience. On the Plaza you can have a casual dinner experience with a little twist. You actually will be cooking your own food in your choice of fondue broth. I chose the wine based broth. The filet was great! A variety of sauces to dip in for all of your side dishes as well as your meat or poultry or fish of choice. And to top it off with a amazing chocolate fondue with strawberries. Also a exceptional wine list. Experience it for yourself. I did and will again. Pros: Great food, Wonderful service, Interesting Cons: Parking more
