Still A Great Experience 9/24/2011

If you are thinking of reading the menu from right to left, then forget this place. If a cover charge that matches a Broadway ticket is offensive, then pass. This is a venerable club from the old world carriage trade, as they used to say, in New York. The headliners are sensational and the room is as intimate as it gets. Be prepared to drop a bundle, but escape to a world that is slowly disappearing and needs to be remembered. more

Go for the entertainment, not the food 2/7/2009

Two things - if I could, I would rate the Cafe Carlyle as a restaurant about a 2.5 or 3. But, I would rate... more

cozyy 11/16/2008

This is one of the finest restaurants I've ever been to. And that's saying a lot since I am such a miser when it comes to five star ratings. A classic ""you get what you pay for,"" and here, you don't get much for $5... or $50... or $100. At Cafe Carlyle, everything is grade A from ambiance, service, and food. They are flawless. more

Wow. In more ways than one. 4/18/2008

We saw Elaine Stritch perform here last year, but I'm just getting around to writing a review. Pros: Incomparable performances, timeless room Cons: Get comfortable at the teeny table; you'll be there a while! more

Great Food, Great Service, Great Ambiance, Great Place!!!!!!!!!! 5/5/2007

I tend to go to restaurants quite often, I love sitting in a table, taste good food along with a great wine and talk with the people I go out with. To be honest, I never thought of going to the Restaurant Carlyle, I thought it was too much for me and too classical. To my surprise it was indeed classical but the moment I stepped foot into the hotel, I was greeted by a attentive gentleman who (with a great smile) asked me if I had a reservation, to which I responded with the name the reservation was under. He promptly took us to our table where an impressive flower arrangement was imposing itself right at the middle of the restaurant. (As the waiter explains, this flowers are changed once a week and when they are brought they are only branches with no flowers, but as the week goes by they start to blossom until thy are changed again.) We statred with some tasty cocktails and continued with a nice white wine recommended by the Sommelier. The food was just amazing, portions are perfect to go trough appetizer and main course and even some space for the dessert. Once we finished with our food the captain came with a trolley full of cakes and desserst, they all looked amazing, but I have to admit that the "mille crepes cake" is just amazing. From the outside the cake does not look special at all, but once they give you the explanation you are just tempted. It is a cake made of crepes, around 47 crepes with pastry cream between each other. JUST AMAZING!!!! you have to try it. At our departure, they gave us a bag with chocolates with a nice note from the restaurant manager and the excecutive cheff, thanking us for comming. I thought it was a nice detail to give to the people. I highly recommend this place, and I would go back anytime. Pros: Attentive/friendly and professional service. Great Food more

Amazing! 5/2/2007

I go out dinning all the time in NYC, I never eat home. I can go to a small burger joint or to a 3 star Michelin restaurant, depending on who I go with (entertaining clients, etc...). A few weeks ago I wanted to take my wife out for dinner but did not want to go far (we live UES), we decided to go to The Carlyle Restaurant, at The Carlyle Hotel. I thought it would be another simple, boring, hotel restaurant meal. But it was not like that AT ALL! It was certainly one of the very best meals I have had in town. From the arrival and the way we were escorted to our table till the moment we left and my wife was given a small bag with a chocolate box (now I know they give it to every lady after dinner) everything was perfect. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the ingredients and the portions, and the service is excellent but not obstrusive. The waitstaff are very nice, as is the sommelier and the manager. Great dinning experience! I go there as often as I can now... (Try the Dover Sole, it's amazing). Pros: Service, Elegant Decor, Quiet and not noisy more

Good atmosphere, good food 2/12/2007

Very nice atmosphere, but could be a bit intimidating. Good choice if you want to dress up for a night out on the town. I went there for restaurant week. The food was surprisingly good for a pre-fix menu. Definitely one of my better experiences with French cuisine. The wine selection is very impressive. Don't skip the creme brulee for desert. Bon Appetit Pros: food, service, atmosphere Cons: dress code more

Take Me Back to Manhattan 7/11/2006

The room, service and ambience truly speak of a bygone elegance and capture the spirit of Old New York. I went to see Eartha Kitt and was as impressed by the service as I was by her amazing performance. The food was basic, America fare - very well-prepared but nothing too exciting. And it was extremely expensive, but worth every penny. I would strongly recommend Cafe Carlyle as THE BEST special occasion restaurant in the city. more

Great Woody Allen Show, lousy service 7/6/2006

I booked a table weeks in advance for my mother and me to see Woody Allen's show in the Carlyle Cafe. Upon timely arrival they put us in the last corner of the room, next to the stage behind the drummer. It was not that there weren't any other tables free and we weren't dressed in jeans either. We were about to dine there for more than $500 including grat and cover! The food was ok but definitely not worth this money. The partial view table either. I did not want to spoil the party cause my mother really loved the show, but I do not recommend this place to anyone. If at all, try to get a place at the bar and hold on to a beer while enjoying the fabulous band! Pros: Woody Allen and his band Cons: Price, Service more

Cabaret great, prices not. 2/17/2006

We went to go see Ute Lemper. During the first 15 minutes of the performance, the sound system gave horrible feedback. It was so bad, at one point she said, ""Should I keep going? Paying $75 each just for the show, I expected the hotel to have a working and high end sound system. I naively thought dinner was served during the show, but the waiters don't come by once the shows start, so order your wine 30 mins before the show start time. The captain will expect a tip on your tab. Also, the Evian they put on your table is $10. I think it's a great ""experience"", but the sofas weren't that comfortable, and I would've been mad if Ute wasn't so great. I would go during a weekday when it's not so crowded and you have the place to yourselves. Also, it's $10pp cheaper on a weeknight. Pros: Great performers, Good lighting Cons: Expensive, Romantic more

MMMM... 4/27/2004

Has the character, has Woody Allen every Monday...why would they care for more. The ambience is super! It was a pricey night but i can't even describe the retro magical feelings...a night to remember for sure. Cool and swing! Pros: ambience, music, feelings more

Great place, poor food 1/21/2004

We went there to see Ute Lemper and she was fantastic. The venue is great. The people were nice and we had a great table. The food is bad and expensive. $15 for appetizer, $40 for main dish, no choice of tap water. You can either have sparkling or still for $10/bottle. My lamp was way too salty and my wife's porcini crusted chicken had not a hint of porcini. I would recommend going for the show and drinks, but not dinner. Pros: great room, drinks, fun Cons: bad food, snooty servers more

hidden gem 6/18/2002

We treated ourselves to see Woody Allen play with his jazz band (mondays; $75 cover). We didn't want to dine there, but our concierge said that it was standing room only without dinner reservations, and she was correct. We had a very good meal, nothing too ambitious. You can't go wrong with smoked salmon and an excellent new york strip sirloin, perfectly done and served with a too-seldom seen bearnaise sauce. Not a good selection of wine for less than $50. Real professional service. Expensive, but worth it! Pros: a classy joint Cons: expensive more
