Best

Black sheep is a great place to go for food during the week (their veggie burger is great).

Worst

Great food, terrible service. I wouldn't recommend it.

Editorial review from Citysearch 4/3/2013

They make a good shepherds pie, Guinness is on tap, and the place isn't too well-lit (nobody likes a brightly lit pub). If you're in the area, it's worth checking out. more

The Black Plague 11/26/2010

The Black Sheep is a poorly managed dive at best. The atmosphere is dump and it looks as though the place has never been cleaned. The hostess had absolutely no personality and didn't appear to be very concerned with her grooming and appearance. Our waitress was an overweight, poorly groomed, obnoxious bitch with the personality of a cobra. She wore shorts that were two sizes too small and black tights. Not a very appetizing look. The food is overpriced for the quality and the menu is very limited. If you don't care about your weight, appearance or overall health, go ahead and eat there. Everything on the menu is full of fat, sodium, cholesterol and sugar. I cannot express my extreme dismay with the server strongly enough. She was awful. In case the manager reads this, she was working upstairs at 10 pm on Thanksgiving eve 2010. more

Way Downhill 2/19/2008

Hey Ikat, I completely agree. This place has gone way downhill and lost all charm. Cons: Horrible Service more

Only good for young kids 1/5/2007

This bar can be very dark and dreary and at night is usually filled with young kids. Not good for people who are older. Pros: good service and food Cons: college bar more

Nice Sunday lunch 6/12/2006

We're big on lunch after church - (see my other reviews). If you go to Saint Mark's on Locust, here's a good stop in. The service is very, very slow but lunch is pretty good. The price is average. Try the banger and mash (sausage and mashed potatos), or the fish fry. The Pulled Pork is very spicy ( no warning on the menu) and the French Toast is, well - not worth the price ( two fat slices of bread for ten dollars?). I don't like TV's over my head while I'm trying to eat and listen to the person next to me - but, that's a pub. And, it does remind you of pubs in England or Ireland. more

great bar!! 3/1/2006

This bar is a fun place to party hard with friends! Yes, the staff gets busy @ times - but just think of them as tough, not rude :) Great beer selection, best place to watch play off games in the city. This is one of my favorite bars that I always take out-of-town friends to during their visits. Pros: great beer selection, good hamburger, party atmosphere Cons: busy staff, smokey downstairs more

I agree with the bad staff/food reviews 2/9/2006

I USE TO like this pub a lot I have been here on several occasions, for my birthday or just for a night out with friends. Maybe its because they won awards and it got to their heads, but in the past few months, the service has sharply declined and so has the food. The main point of this review is this.... I made a reservation a week in advance for dinner at 8PM on a weeknight. Yes, a popular time, but when we arrived (at 7:45 nonetheless) they told us that they were all full and gave our table away to a ""big group"". The hostess was trying to pull every lame excuse on us as to why she had just given the table away. On top of that, she was rude and didn't even apologize for the inconvenience and because of it, I will NEVER go here again. Cons: Food, Service more

Wonderful experience 2/5/2006

My husband and I had dinner in the second floor dining room on Saturday night. It was great to have a non-smoking environment that was actually seperate from the smoking (downstairs). Our server was attentive and pleasant - he even treated us to a couple of hard-ciders to participate in a taste test with him. The curry mussles were fantatastic and the crabcakes were some of the best I've had in the city. I'm looking forward to bringing friends next time. Pros: great food, friendly service, quick seating more

Fabulous Lunch 2/17/2005

The hubby had a Guinness and the fish and chips, I had a cocktail and the grilled tuna sandwich...the food was phenomenal! Bothe served with mixed greens tossed in a vinagrette and extremely crunchy, yet tender fries (I'm NOT a fries lover, but these were yummy!) some type of pickled ginger/slaw was absolutely delicious especially rounding out the fish. All served on a huge platter...great value and good eats! Pros: atmosphere, tasty food, great value more

Rude bar staff & no attention to customers. 2/13/2005

This bartender left 2 women with a very bad feeling. Sat at the bar, waited quite a few minutes, though the place had 2x's the waitstaff to customers. Asked a question once the waiter daned to acknowledge our presence & were cut short with a ""order or don't, it's the same to me attitude."" Couldn't get out of there quickly enough. This is the reason for the expression, ""One rotten apple can spoil a barrell."" more

Fun for food or drink. 8/16/2004

I've been here several times and always enjoyed it, whether I wanted a sit-down meal with a group or just a place to hang out for drinks on a date. The food is definitely a cut-above average bar standards, with some of the best calamari I've had anywhere and an excellent spicy mushroom wrap. The upstairs dining room is nice if you want a less hectic and noisy experience. I've had no problem with the waitservice; in fact I've found them very accomodating in several instances regarding special requests and speeding up service when I needed to make a show. It's a nice alternative to the always packed and crazy environment at Monk's. Pros: good food, good service, cosy atmosphere more

Worst Eating Experience 6/17/2004

My friend and I ordered a cheese plate and when it came out it had meat in it (which the menu didn't mention) We are vegetarians, so we hated to say anything about it but we had to tell the waitress. She took it and said she replaced it with a new one, but later in the meal we found out she just dumped it on a new plate. If she had told us she couldn't replace it, ok, but she just lied instead. She got mad when she got caught and proceeded to whisper blatently to all her co-workers who starred at us for this. The refused to allow us to speak to the manager so we just ended up leaving. I would never recommend people go there for lack of the staff caring alone. Cons: , Staff, Food more

This place does it all so well... 1/23/2003

This place is definately the best on the square.... Try their amazing coconut curry mussels or the pork sandwich on the first floor. Or go on upstairs and sit down to some fabulous crab cakes or a fillet. If you don't like to be in a swamped bar then come back on Sunday for a great brunch. You won't be disappointed. This place does it all so well..... Pros: great food, value, great energy more

Better than home 11/13/2002

To call the Black sheep Pub doesn't give it ists full due. NOt only was in voted ""Best Pub in Philly"" last year but its food has been rated at the level of some of our best reataurants. The upstairs dining room is a smoke-free and quiet while tthe first floor bar has the ambiance of a Irissh Pub in full swing. Great place to meet people. Pros: delicious, happy, handsome Cons: crowded more
