Telfair Museum of Art

I didn't actually go to the Telfair Museum on my recent trip to Savannah, but I went to their new addition: the Jepson Center for Modern Art. It was superb. The video installations were an experience that were alone worth the admission. Having recently taken my first college art class, too, I was well aware of the impressive collection of very famous artists housed there such as Andy Warhol, Richard Serra, Damien Hirst, and many others. Some of the installations were absolutely breathtaking and thought provoking. We had no idea how wonderful it would be because it does seem rather small from the outside. My one criticism was that they had books/products endorsing artists in the gift shop whose works they did not have: such as Kiki Smith. The Telfair Art Museum, located in historic downtown Savannah is a treasure. It is not that large for a museum, but it is quite a large house (which was the building's original function.) I enjoyed the variety of pieces, representing many different artists, movements, and eras. In fact, I think I even have a new favorite artist and there are many interesting paintings. exhibits are changed periodically to showcase the museum's permanent collection as well as some visiting exhibits. Some of the displays could use some work as labels are faded and difficult to read, and they are having some power issues so lighting is a bit odd downstairs. It is worth seeing and the staff is very friendly and helpful. more
