I have been a friend of the owners family for a long time. Lon and Hip are hard core Vietnamese workers from what call the bloodiest war around. This kind of determination takes special people unlike what we have today. As far as the food goes...., It's the best in town, especially as the family always feed me for free. Thank you Lon and Hip for being role models in this so called thing as life. Kenny, give me a call anytime, Your friend John Carey, Washington. more

Fresh, Family Favorite 4/19/2011

This place does SOME things poorly but is the very best in the area at other things. Personally, I've grown up on Chinese buffets with all the sweet, thick, syrupy sauces.\r \r As this is a Vietnamese restaurant, I do not recommend walking in under the assumption that they will do their food the way a Chinese buffet does it. As for service, this is a family-run business and over the ten or so times we've eaten there (usually in the evening), we've never had any complaints with our servers.\r \r They do not have delivery, but we often call in an order for pickup and they have it ready within 30 minutes.\r \r First time there, I tried my normal Chinese favorite of "Sweet and Sour Chicken" which was a huge mistake. The fried meat bits came out hard and chewy, and the sweet and sour sauce was thinner and less sweet than I'm used to.\r \r After that, I took my brother's advice and started trying dishes with fresh vegetables and non-fried meats. I have to admit, this made a huge difference. The more

The Reviewer below is Trolling... 4/6/2011

I've lived in Duluth for 34 years, and I can easily say that Taste of Saigon is my favorite Asian restaurant in the Twin Ports. This is based solely on one dish in particular: Spicy Beef (or Chicken) Cashew. I'd order something else but the spicy ginger sauce and fresh veggies are so good that I don't bother. That's not to say that I haven't tried some of their other dishes (my dates like to share, and I like it when they do!), in particular sesame chicken, vegetable lo mein (Wide noodles +++++) and their wonderful (albeit deep-fried) egg rolls. Also, I should add that this is one of the very few restaurants in the Twin Ports where you can order something ""Spicy"" and actually receive a meal where you really should blow your nose when you're finished. If you order their spicy menu items ""Hot"", they deliver in spades. \r \r I eat there at least once every two weeks as I work downtown, and have for the last ten years. I have NEVER had bad service, or a bad meal from this place. The meats have always had flavor, were always safely cooked but not overdone, and the vegetables are fantastic. While I'll say I'm ignorant of what genuine Vietnamese cuisine should taste like, I can't imagine that anyone who has ordered any of the aforementioned items could leave there with anything but a full tummy and a smile. I would offer 10 stars if I could. Ignore the Troll reviews, these are obviously placed by their competition and not genuine patrons. Leather beef my $%&!\r more

The worst Asian food 5/26/2010

The absolute worst Asian food I have had anywhere. We ordered Cream cheese wontons, Beef Lo Mein, and Chicken in ""Special Garlic Sauce"". The wontons contained clumps of...something. It was white, it wasn't creamy, and it didn't taste good. The Beef Lo Mein came with mostly vegetables, and the beef was tasteless and a lot like leather. The chicken was the same as the Beef. Not much of a discernible difference in taste. The ""Special Garlic Sauce"" did not contain even a whiff of garlic. We ate two of the Wontons and told them to take them away. They cheerfully asked if we would like a box for the 75% of our meals that remained. I told them, ""No. It is truly awful, and I just want to forget it"". They said they were sorry. When the bill came, they had deducted two dollars off for the wontons. I've had better Chinese food (and no mistake, this IS Chinese food and nothing else) at the Mall and even in the frozen food section. There are much better Chinese food places in Duluth/Superior. Well...ANY of them! Don't waste your money. I truly regretted eating this food. I wish I could go back in time and have a Do-Over. Ick! This place may have been good in the past, but no more. Like the previous reviewer stated, ""Mediocre Chinese food can be found anywhere"". Food this bad can only be found here at ""The Taste of Saigon"". P.S. I am required to submit a rating based on these yellow stars. Unfortunately, NO star is not an option. Pros: polite staff Cons: The food and price more

Definitely Not Vietnamese!! 3/22/2010

My husband and I were very disappointed after reading the other reviews (although come to think of it....only one was posted in the last 6 months). Vietnamese fare is renowned for its use of fresh vegetables and herbs (lemongrass, Thai basil, etc) and light, flavorful broths w/ noodles. This was heavy sauces and large vegetable chunks over gummy rice - much more like typical Chinese food. No spring rolls (my favorite and mentioned in a previous review) were available - only deep fried egg rolls. Maybe the place has changed hands and serves what it thinks people want, but mediocre chinese food is available anywhere. I'm still looking for real Vietnamese fare here in the Northland. Pros: Friendly staff Cons: Not typical vietnamese fare more

Best Asian food around! 9/4/2009

The staff is very kind and the food is really tasty not to mention affordable. Even though there isn't any delivery (to my knowledge) they offer carry out. Pros: Friendly staff, delicious food and a relaxing atmosphere. Cons: Finding a parking spot and I don't believe they deliver. more

Divine 10/5/2007

I was amazed by the freshness of the food. Not only did it taste marvelous, but it also tasted wholesome. They have a wonderful menu, a beautiful restaurant, and such friendly people. I also think the pricing on the cuisine is very reasonable, and the service has always been fast. Cons: none that I could find. more

Best Asian food in the Twin Ports by a long shot. Possibly the best Asian food I've had in the U.S. 12/20/2006

This is a great Vienamese restaurant. In fact, it's a great restaurant period. The food is freshly prepared (the beef and chicken is real, not the mystery meat often found in Asian restaurants), the atmosphere is fun, and the founders still work the kitchen and the till. Try their spring rolls, their fried rice, and anything with pea pods. Make sure you order the pepper sauce on the side. No reservations, and lunch is pretty busy -- still, the service is quick, and the staff will chat you up. Finally, if the weather is good, get your food to go, and sit on the shore of Lake Superior and eat. Just watch out for the gulls!\r \r How do I rate Taste of Saigon? What's better than Highly Recommended? Supremely Recommended? Pros: Cool site, great food, friendly staff. Cons: None I can think of. more

The best egg rolls in this town! 11/5/2005

This is the place to go if you want good chinese & a vegetarian option. Their food is fabulous, and has a healthy aspect to it. If you like spicy, try the lemon-grass chicken-you won't be disappointed! PROS: Great food! CONS: No delivery : ( more
