Go if you like to spend money to be treated rudely 6/9/2010

Absolutely horrible. I had dinner at Tapas Teatro last night: the food was decent, although I thought it was overpriced, the atmosphere was like a diner, and the hostess who also seems to be some manager was rude and mean. Already when asking for a table, the hostess spoke in a condescending tone. She never even smiled. ""Is your company already here?"" she nasalized, snapping around so I am answering to her back. Nothing totally unusual and at first hardly noticed by me. The beginning of the evening was nice, our waitress friendly, the food good. The table was quite small for Tapas, but it worked, no big deal. I was still eating my desert when the waitress brought the check for the first time. I declined and ordered another glass of wine. The check again followed right away and this time we paid. I felt rushed like in a diner, but maybe our manager had friends coming over again and wanted this table back (see rating below). This restaurant has elements of cosmopolitan atmosphere with European flair but the staff and management fail to understand the beauty of a leisurely evening. The return of the hostess: Right after we paid but were still sitting to drink the wine, the hostess made another appearance at the table claiming that smoking was not allowed. I was startled: We were outside, the table was on the sidewalk, the waitress had given me an ashtray, no one came when I smoked before dinner and before we paid. I managed to shake this dictator-hostess for a second: ""If this is non-smoking, why did your waitress bring me an ashtray?"" The hostess paused but caught herself quickly deciding to ignore my rude challenging of her authority. She only answered that I could smoke at the both ends right next to the restaurant. I responded that this would be my last cigarette then. Again, even though she obviously lied and just made up that rule, she had to continue her weird mood and power trip: ""No, I need to ask you to extinguish your cigarette now"" and she left. Needless to say I did not extinguish my cigarette and she came back furious that I have dared to ignore her orders: She snatched the ashtray with my cigarette out from underneath me barking: ""This is illegal"". Of course, it was not illegal, I was outside. I watched her stride to the trash bin at the end of the street and was speechless at first. I guess she really wanted this table back or maybe she didn't like my dress, maybe she is xenophobic and didn't like my accent..... I don't know what it was, but a friend confirmed to me the same night, that they always smoke at Tapas Teatro, so I was obviously not overstepping any boundaries by smoking a cigarette. No one came back to our table anymore to serve us form hereon, and the dictator-hostess won her battle: I wanted to leave and return the table to her. My friend must have spent over $60 for two people that night however the hostess/ manager for some reason thought it was necessary to ruin our evening. She is in the wrong business, the place is trying to be something it is not, the food is good but overpriced. For me, a horrible experience, and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I have been trying to call this place to complain to the manager, but I can't reach anyone. Pros: Tasty Food Cons: Rude/ lying staff, bad atmosphere, overpriced more

Horrible!! 1/20/2007

I've been here twice. The first time was not so bad. I went with a group of people and sat outside and it was really quite nice. So I was really excited to return with my boyfriend and have a nice date night out. Terrible idea!! The waitress was horrible. She never checked on us, other to refill our drinks to increase her tip. And when presented the bill at the end of our meal, no one even said thank you for coming. Very dissapointed. We go out to eat alot and are used to good service. We've gone to eat at the most expensive restaurants in the city, but that day we received better service at our lunch at IHOP. Pros: outdoor dining, parking Cons: service, food, price more

Unsatisfactory. 2/15/2006

I've been to several tapas restaurants, and this one is by far the worst one I've experienced. The food was decent and the presentation was very nice, but neither the taste nor the portions justified the expensive prices for some of the dishes. The restaurant itself is quite noisy with tables pushed incredibly close together and the smell of popcorn waffed over from the adjacent Charles Theater. Plus, the tables themselves are incredibly small and rickity, making dinner an uncomfortable experience for taller individuals. The service was decent, but seemed hurried and the staff generally unknowledgable about the cuisine. This might be a fun place for appetizers and drinks, but definitely not a good place for a nicer meal or a romantic occassion. more

Easy to find, plenty of street and paid lot parking available. We were seated promptly and staff was friendly and attentive - food was mistakenly put on our table that we didnt order, and one item that we had ordered was sold out and we werent notified until about 20 minutes after we ordered it. The food was very tasty and they did have a good selection for all tastes. The tables were too tiny to fit the drinks and plates on, they were mear inches from each other, you were practically touching the stranger next to you not to mention it was loud and intrusive - not exactly a romantic date setting. There was not even room for the most petite woman to get to and from her seat without moving the tables. I found it to be a bit too expensive for the over all experience. Pros: good food, friendly staff, ample parking Cons: tables too small , tables too close , price more
