Syd's rules. My stylist makes me feel pretty! 3/15/2011

I used to be the kind of girl who not only hated her fine limp, mousy brown hair, but refused to get it cut and styled more than 2-3 times a year. Syd's, and specifically, the sweet young stylist Rachel, changed all that. I started going to Syd's for cuts and color when I relocated to Chapel Hill from NYC in October 2008. I was getting my hair done by a stylist there who I liked a lot. She left to open a new place, but I love the minimalist, laid back vibe and wanted to be loyal to Syd's. So in the summer of 2010, a new tiny, very young stylist named Rachel started cutting and coloring my hair. I feel SOOOO pretty when I leave her chair. She has the perfect color for my complexion, and she always cuts my hair in a way that flatters my face and magically makes it look fuller. She's awesome. Better than any stylist I found in my 8 years in NYC. So happy at Syd's, and the fact that the cut and color is affordably priced makes me feel extra happy every time I leave. more

3 Stlylists 12/5/2009

since there are many reviews about us, we'd like to let people know that Jenean, Jenni and Laura have all moved to downtown Durham to open their own salon! more

Love it! 5/7/2009

I have been seeing Marit at Syd's since 2007. I had a really short, awesome cut from her for years, and I ALWAYS got compliments from random strangers asking who cut my hair! I joked with her that I should just get ""Syd's"" shaved into my head so everyone knows! I am growing my hair out now, and was able to go for months without needing a refresher cut (without looking like I was in the ""awkward"" growing out stage) because she did such a good job shaping it in the beginning stages. I highly recommend this shop - the atmosphere is funky and unique, and the stylists are great. I will be a loyal customer forever! Pros: atmosphere, staff, stylists Cons: not a lot of parking, but usually adequate more

First timer with Laura 4/7/2009

I tried Syd's after reading reviews and was not disappointed at all. Laura is new there and a well kept secret. Funky place, layed -back staff helped me to feel comfortable...nothing pretencious there...Only complaint is I think a $40 haircut is way over priced. My daughter had Gwen and I cannot say she was anything special as far as results go. Pros: Relaxed atmosphere Cons: Pricey more

Able to do layers for my crazy fine, thick, and irregularly wavy hair 2/28/2009

I got a great hair cut from Jenean yesterday. It is not easy to find a person who can cut layers well on my baby-fine, but thick and irregularly wavy shoulder-length hair. As a result of any number of poorly-done layered cuts, I had started wearing it all one length. Jenean was able to cut my hair in a way that met all the criteria I requested, but also had a creative flair. The cut she gave is low-maintenance and unique. It will look good worn either wavy or straight.\r \r If you are looking for a hair stylist who *really listens* to what you ask for, is low-key and friendly, does not rush, and gives you a great cut try Jenean. Pros: Watching customers leaving & looking happy with their great haircuts. Cons: The atmosphere was a bit noisy. more

Not Best Chapel Hill Salon 1/16/2009

Although Syd's received some nice reviews and prompted me to visit this salon, by experience was just OK at best. Compared to salons in Toronto, Montreal, NY, Atlanta, Syd's does not live up to excellence in hairstyling. With a tip my haircut was around $40. Actually I would rather pay more and have a stylist who was experienced and well trained. Pros: They offer water or soda Cons: A very basic salon, no atmosphere and stylists are just average more

Fun atmosphere, reasonable prices, great staff 12/2/2008

I've been going to Syd's for about a year now and have only been unsatisfied once with a cut I got from a stylist I had never seen before. I usually see Gwen for cut and color; Marit is also awesome. I love the decor and atmosphere -- this is not a snooty hipster place. They have a variety of magazines, complementary drinks, and good music. Everyone is friendly. \r \r I'm one of those annoying girls who always wants a change, but never knows exactly what I want. Gwen has listened to me fumble for some sort of vague explanation before talking me through what she thinks would look good -- I usually just let her go for it and love the results. I have naturally curly hair that I wear both curly and straight. Gwen gives me cuts that look good both ways, something that not many stylists can do. Her coloring and highlights always looks natural. It's a funky place with friendly, talented stylists -- all for a reasonable price. Love it! Pros: ambience, staff, prices Cons: small parking lot more

Syd's rocks! 5/4/2008

A friend recently recommended Syd's Hairshop to me. After seeing her super cute cut, i was inspired to make a change. I have tried several salons in the triangle area with mediocre results. Syd's is relaxed and fun. Friendly staff, especially the receptionist. My stylist Jenny, gave me exactly what I wanted. Now I am inspired to try color! I will definitely be going back to Syd's from now on. I've found my salon in Chapel Hill!! Pros: Amazing price, parking lot!! friendly staff more

Jenean has THE GIFT 4/18/2008

I've had haircuts by a few different stylists at Syd's, and they were all very good, but I've had such great cuts with Jenean that I'm going to be requesting her from now on. She gave me great, long layers a few months ago when my hair was half way down my back, and then when I came in last weekend half wanting a bob, half scared to cut it all, she wisely suggested an in-between ""transition"" cut, and then gave me the best hair cut I've ever had.\r \r The $110 cuts I used to get in New York don't even come close to this $40 cut.\r \r My mom and my sister both made appointments with her after they saw my hair, and I've received a ton of compliments. I'm super happy with my new cut, and I'll definitely be returning for maintenance trims, rather than waiting 6 months between visits like I usually do. Pros: Casual, fun atmosphere, cool friendly staff, great value more

Amy and Syd's both rock! 3/6/2008

I just wanted to take the time to say that Amy Testerman is the best hairstylist I have ever had in my 30 years. She is friendly and always wants to know exactly what I want from the experience, and then does her best to make my hair look just right. I have come in with no idea what I wanted and just let her go at it, and she comes up with the cutest cuts. I trust her so much that Amy will be doing my hair for my wedding this May. I have recommended her to several friends, all of whom are now regular clients. Amy is an asset to Syds. Pros: Amy works there Cons: Some people just can't handle this level of skill. more

Depends on who you get 3/2/2008

REVIEW 1: I had heard lots of good things about Syd's, so after moving back to Chapel Hill from New York (and getting great haircuts there!--and I am totally haircut-phobic. I cut my hair by myself for 7 years until moving to NYC), I decided to give it a try. I told Amy that I just wanted a trim and a little bit of shape to it, as I am growing my hair out. Amy made me thankful that I used to cut my own hair, because when I got home I had to fix it myself, cutting off a good two-three inches (now to my shoulders). The problem wasn't that I didn't like the style, it's that it was simply a bad haircut and that Amy used bad judgment. I do not have thick hair by any measure, but Amy thought that it would be a good idea to use thinning shears. Halfway through the haircut I got the feeling that it was more that she was having fun using those special little scissors than that she was using them to give me a good cut. Then, she cut such short layers throughout that I ended up looking like Carol Brady, the mullet years (you know, the cut that made you say, ""my god, she should really just cut off that extra hangy part of her hair so that she could have a really, really cute pixie cut!!!""). Oh thank you, Amy, for making my hair so thin that it looks like I plastered it to my head! Thank you, thank you, dear Amy, for I will never have to wear a bike helmet again, as my hair looks so much like one already that any cop would mistake me for someone playing it safe! Thank you, thank you, thank you!\r \r \r REVIEW 2: Oh, Gwen! You gave me the most rockin' hair color ever: super blonde that would be too sweet, except for the incredible, badass pink streaks you put in it! Gwen did exactly what I asked for, and she spent a lot of time analyzing my hair to make sure it would come out just right. Awesome!! Pros: Cheap cut/color. Good parking. Cute salon. GWEN. Cons: Uhh, the staff? No, the skill level. No no, the end result. Oh no, maybe the thinning shears? Oh, uh, all of that. Plus having to walk out looking like a mullet head. more

Best Hair Cut Ever! 8/26/2007

I have lived in London, New York and San Francisco. I call the Triangle home now. I have been going to Syd's for severl years and am always welcomed and gvien the hair cut that I want. Sometimes I get color (yes I'm a guy) and I'm always pleased with the results. The atmosphere is fun and easy-going and the music is fun. The location is just-off Franklin street and there's always parking in their lot. The staff is friendly and offer me a latte or soda when I wait. Pros: location, price, service Cons: often busy more

Great Chapel Hill place. 8/22/2007

Syd's isn't your typical salon -- casual atmosphere and great music! Everyone who works there has tattoos and there is a gas pump in front of the building with flames painted on it. My haircut is great and she showed me how to style it. I'll be back. more

RUN AWAY 6/11/2007

I got the worst haircut and highlights---EVER...at Syd's. While the atmosphere was cool and relaxed, I left with hair that stunk (and the smell lasted for DAYS---even through like 25 washings) and I looked like I cut my hair myself. It was such a disappointment, especially after having friends who went there and had great results and paying over $200 for stinky hair. I hope I just caught things on an off day, but I am not willing to risk going back. For great hair in Chapel Hill, try Mina's....they fixed my Syd's disaster and I have been thrilled everytime I have had my hair done there. We refer to Syd's as ""Syd's Mullet Shop"" after my experience!!! I think guys have better luck with the hair, but the atmosphere is really chill. Pros: cool atmosphere more

Fun, hip, not too expensive. 1/29/2007

Syd's recently upped the price of a women's cut to $30, but this is still well-below what you would expect to pay in a cosmopolitan area for something of the same quality. If you have a blunt cut or a bob, and if you want to continue sporting the same do for the next decade or so, then you should not try Syd's. However, if you are slightly more adventurous, then by all means give it a try. I see Marit now, and I have since my first appointment a year ago. She listens to what I want, but I am not afraid to trust her judgement, either. She is able to inject creativity into the cuts I have asked for, and I have seen her do this with other clients as well. I do wish they offered more services at Syd's, like maybe some waxing, but I am very happy with the cool cuts and the edgy coloring already available. Pros: Cool and hip but without the cool and hip price Cons: Not enough services offered more

worst place to go! do not recommend it! 12/29/2006

It is the worst place I have ever been. Don't go there. Bad service, irresponsible . Waste of money! more

best Guy's cuts around. 7/24/2006

I just got the best haircut ever at Syd's! It's textured and interesting -- no boring cuts here, plus the music ROCKS! They showed me how to use products and listened to me. I'm definately coming back! Pros: Great price, guy friendly. Cons: none. more

I always make last minute appointments... 7/24/2006

and Syds always fits me in. I can show up early and use the wifi which I love... then I have fun with Amy. I can't stand the typical $10 super cuts deal for men... , Amy always gives me something slightly funky but tame that I enjoy and it looks good for 5-6 weeks until I think about going back.\r I'm not sure what happened with reviewer 'cheetah' above but that doesn't reflect my experiences there. Great place, great people, convenient and I'm lookin' good for weeks. Cons: Some people are used to $10 for a haircut, when you're ready to spend a little more and look a LOT better you'll get over the $25-30. more

STAY AWAY! 7/14/2006

OK so I saw this girl in the post office who had great cut & color and she said she got it at Syd's & loved the place. She was either looney or paid off to say this. Based on her recommendation I went and got same colorist but forgot who she said did her cut so colorist did my cut too. VERY BAD IDEA. Also make sure you like to WAIT!! Had to wait 20 minutes just to be escorted to her chair. then it took another 20 minutes just to mix my color. and the cut - what cut? It a hack job. I had to go to another salon to get the cut fixed into something workable. After talking to a couple people later about my horrendous experience I found out they too heard and saw the totally UGLY chop jobs coming from this salon. BEWARE!!!! Cons: simply awful more

Best Salon on the hill! 3/17/2006

I've been going to Syd's since there opening and have always been very satisfied with the entire experience. Men have the option of a buzzcut for $10.00 or scissor cut for $30.00. I have done both and get great reults every single time\r Staff is very friendly unlike some other Chapel Hill salons and the enviroment is great.\r \r Pros: Friendly staff, cool enviroment, great hours and skills with the scissors. more
