Editorial review from Citysearch 12/15/2013

The woman who owns this bakery has to be one of the rudest people I have ever met. This, on top of the mediocre food means that I will never return. I went with a friend because we had heard good things, and there is a really cool shop two doors down. We planned on stopping in the shop and then heading over to the bakery, but as we passed the bakery the owner came out and started yelling at us about parking. She called my friend a b*tch and asserted that she couldn't read because of the signs saying the parking lot was private. We will not only never go to this bakery, but none of our friends will either. I can't support that sort of behavior, even if the food were amazing, which it isn't. more

Excellent custom design birthday cake 8/1/2009

We ordered a cake for a relative's 80th birthday party, which turned out to be fantastic. All of the family loved the beautiful design which topped the cake, and were also very impressed by the chocolate cake itself- moist, not overly sweet (which is always a concern with a heavily decorated cake) in short it was a great success . Kudos to the baker/artist. We also had friendly help from Joseph during the ordering process (we sampled a couple of cupcakes while we were there too- yummy!!) Pros: beautifully designed and tasty celebration cake Cons: none more

Don't recommend for special-occasion cakes 10/19/2008

Cake: I ordered a birthday cake here for its fame in Austin Chronicle Restaurant Poll. The cake was recommended by the staff at Sweetish Hill and was very rich and sweet but doesn't quite live up to its ""#2 bakery in Austin"" name. None of my guests liked it, which was saddening. The cake was $40 and $16 of it was charged for decoration. I felt pushed into spending the extra $16, but was quite disappointed when I got the cake because the decoration was simple and not artistic. HEB could have done a better job for cheaper. On the other hand, I did receive the cake 3 hours earlier than the original pickup time, so maybe the decoration was rushed. Pros: Cute bakery in the downtown area, satisfy your sweet tooth once in awhile Cons: Parking, Special-Occasion Cakes, Inconsistent service more

delicious cakes 3/26/2007

Sweetish Hill is my go-to place for birthday cakes. They're always just sweet enough without being cloying, and I've never tried one I didn't like. They're also reasonably priced (why go to HEB when you can get a cake for the same price that has icing made out of buttercream, not crisco?) and beautiful. Their cookies are amazing. Pros: reasonably priced cakes more

Staff didn't Know what a Torte Is 1/31/2007

On three seperate visits, I asked about getting tortes. Each time the staff did not know what a torte is, please help your staff. Its hard to believe that you have hired three staff that don't know anything about pasteries. Ok, its Austin. more

Fabulous Cupcakes 11/17/2006

I absolutely love sweetish hill. They have the best cupcakes. My Favorite are the chocolate with the buttercram white frosting. The cake itself is very moist, and has incredible flavor. The frosting has a kick that keeps me coming back for more. I also love the mini buns. They are soo good. I go to sweetish hill at least once a week to stock up. Pros: Food Cons: Parking more

An okay bakery 7/5/2005

I tried out Sweetish Hill because I love sweets, esp pastries with coffee and because of their great review as a bakery. I guess I expected a lot more from them, but the fruit tart and sticky bun was delicious, but the coffee was too strong and acidic for my taste. Since I liked their desserts, I'd like to try out other items too, but I'd rather drive to Burnet than Downtown for a sweet craving toward the Upper Crust - I LOVE their cinnamon rolls. Pros: parking lot Cons: coffee more

Mmm mmm good 3/22/2005

Great sandwichs, great soups, love the bialys and adore the banana bread pudding. Yummy goodness. Thank goodness they now take credit card or I'd be still going to the one on San Jacinto. more
