This restaurant closed in early 2009. While it may have been a wonderful place, they fell behind on rent, and were evicted. Pros: Closed Cons: Closed more

Excellent food, Excellent service 3/26/2007

First of all I am not a citizen of Detroit but I went through the trouble of signing up for the city search site just so that I could say what I feel about this restaraunt. I went there a few years or so back; when it first opened up and I really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. I didn't get the chance to enjoy it as much as I would have liked because my children were with me. Though I wanted them to experience fine dining with familly, it is not really a place small children can appreciate but it is ""doable."" Anyway, the fried lobster tail is what I had and some delicious desert which was well over enough for two people. The music and service were nice and it is just nice to be able to enjoy fine dining right there in Greektown. I look forward to going back one day and having the brunch that I heard was great. Out of all of these reviews so far, only a couple were negative. I would say that's a good review for anyone who is still considering. Maybe those cusotmers went during management vacation and I think we all know how that can go sometimes (unfortunately). Negatively speaking, the location is not the most ideal especially when considering appearance (inside vs. out). more

One of Detroit's Excellent Finds 2/19/2007

This was my first experience at Sweet Georgia Browns and I'd have to say it was excellent. The seafood was the best I've ever had. I had the fried twin lobster tails which were heavenly and my fiance had that nights special which was a lobster shell stuffed with lobster, shrimp & crab with a champaigne cream sauce. He still can't stop raving about that one! The wine selection was nice and the jazzy atmosphere gave you something to do while being there. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and very polite. The entire staff was very accomodating, from checking on us frequently to walking you to the restroom when you ask where it was located instead of just pointing. Our server never let our hands do any work, she was constantly pouring our wine and cleaning our table. I definitely can't wait to go back and would recommend it to anyone. Pros: Excellent Seafood, Great Atmosphere Cons: A little hard to see from the street more

One of Detroit's Finest Establishments! 2/6/2007

Returning back to the Detroit area after 4 years in Chicago and NYC, I was a bit disapointed to in the restaurants of choice in Grosse Pointe and Birmingham/Bloomfield etc. Venturing to downtown Detroit more and more, I found Sweet Georgia Brown's to be just what I was looking for!! Not only was the setting and atmosphere great, but the food was to die for and you cannot beat the service and management. I had an extended discussion with General Manager Steve, he was professional, charming and educated in his craft. Enjoy!! I know I will again!! Pros: Service, Food, Ambience Cons: no smoking more

Fried lobster -- Suprisingly YUM yum 2/2/2007

Their signature dish is a fried twin lobster tails (yes, not one but two lobster tails!) ... Yum, absolutely delicious. Probably one of the best lobsters I've ever had. I didn't care much for the ""default"" sides (dirty rice and mashed potatoes--apparently I should've gotten sweet potatoes). \r I had heard crazy talk of frying lobsters (somewhere new here in Chicago)..., but never had tried anything like it. I had pictured an breaded, over-cooked lobster being the result.... this was anything but. The lobster was fried in shell, the meaty part cut outward slightly and that part was lightly breaded. Frying the lobster apparently brought out it's sweetness. And it was extremely light, which to me was the most suprising part of all. \r \r I ate alone at the bar. They had a very nice live jazz band that would've kept me around longer had I not went so late and they left. The chef came out and talk to me, asked me how I enjoyed the lobster, explained it, etc... which is always a nice treat. \r \r Despite being in the parking garage of the Greektown Casino (free parking, you just have to run into the casino to validate it at the automated machine... Or go in to gamble too...), the interior of the place was very upscale. Probably one of the most upscale interiors of anywhere in Downtown Detroit. Many people were dressed to the Hilt--cocktail dresses and the whole nine yards. I was wearing jeans so at first glance I wasn't sure if I fit their dress code, which is why I opted to sit by the bar (not to mention it was nearer the band, and I was alone, so it seemed like I might actually enjoy it more anyway). Looking around more, I realized there wasn't really a dress code it just happened that some people were really decked out. Drinks were reasonable, the lobster entree was the most expensive at $37 (most others were 25-30). \r \r I'd definetely go back. Pros: Food is amazing, free parking more

Still love it! 11/23/2006

Sweet Georgia Brown's is still one of my favorite restaurants. The restaurant is beautiful and the food is even better. I love their crab legs and their peach cobbler is excellent. Love it! Pros: Great food, beautiful restaurant, great atmosphere, awesome service more

I've never had lobster better anywhere in my life! 10/20/2006

You have to try SGB's dignature dishes, including the fried lobster tail & ANY sweet potato dish! They also have amazing peach cobbler! The bar tender created a drink based on a couple preferences & it was delicious! Atmosphere was elegant, service was exceptional -very friendly waitstaff, including one waitress who works at & recommended the Detroit Breakfast House - she was one of the best waitresses we've ever had! Once you've had SGB lobster tail, you won't want it any other way! more

Detroit's Finest Brunch 7/16/2006

SGB's brunch is bar none the best brunch you will find in metro detroit. a place of elegant cuisines and service. buffett style brunch but dont let that discourage you. you can also order omelettes and ect. from the kitchen if you dont want the buffett. smooth jazz and champagne await you the second you walk in. although a bit pricey @ $36/person, but every dollar is well worth it! more

This is it!!! 1/13/2006

Ooooh My God! This restaurant is awesome. Service are great. People who work there are very professional. Food and ambience is great. I am very pleased everything what I had experienced. I had a fillet mignon it melt in your mouth. Their crab and shrimp cake is very very good. It is not too expensive and not cheap. It is perfect price if you are looking for great restaurant. They have a piano and player. If you want to have romantic dinner or special dinner, I would highly recommend. I will go back again to try more food. more

Slow and Mediocre 11/14/2005

Unfortunately, when we went to the restaurant for a special occasion, we found the service to be unexplainably slow and the food to be quite dry. We had a group of 8. It's a pretty restaurant, but needs some management present. Also, it is not well marked on the outside at night for people going for the first time. more

Positive Experience 7/20/2005

This resturant was recommended to me as I was in town on vacation. I took my wife there for our 5 year anniversary. While I wasn't blown away by the atmosphere, it wasn't too noisy and our service was fantastic! We started out with great Crab Cakes. My wife really enjoyed the Maple Glazed Barbeque Shrimp (a 10) and my Southern Comfort Pork Chops were good (8.0). We shared the Peach Cobbler which was enough for two. They also suprised us with a special anniversary dessert (which I think was the Godiva Chocolate Torte). Both desserts were top notch, although I enjoyed the Chocolate a little me. The meal ran about $85 with tip, which is pretty good. more

Disappointing 6/19/2005

This was my second trip to Sweet Georgia Brown and had I written after my first visit (2 years ago) I would have agreed with all of the previous reviews--at that time the place was fantastic. This visit, however, was a major disappointment. My main complaint is with the food--the quality has gone down. Nothing was great. I had the signature dish--the Trio with lobster, filet, and a crab cake. It was bad--cold, not well cooked, and not flavorful at all. The fried lobster was such a disappointment especially since it was SO wonderful the first time I was there. The appetizers and salads were good, but they don;t make the meal. The other people I was with had better luck, but the food was just good--nothing out of the ordinary. And it was expensive ($400!!!) Hopefully this was just a bad day, but I don;t plan on going back. Pros: ambience Cons: price, food quality more

Simply Wonderful 5/3/2005

I was refered by a friend to stop by ""Sweet Georgia Brown"" while I was in Detroit on Business. She showed me an article from a magazine and I read it. I told myself that it was my first time in Detroit, but that was one place I had to go to. The article that I read was completely true and to much of my satisfaction. My visit exceed my expectations and I was pleased with the service and the food was extrodinaire. I couldn't choose what I wanted to order because everything on the menu sounded so good. I had to order several things because I just had to taste them. Even the fried green tomatoes were so tastey. I will be back soon . more

Extradinary -- and I mean Extra Ordinary 3/14/2005

While visiting Detroit from South Florida, my friend took me to Sweet Georgia's. The experience was great! I was treated like a Queen (that I am) and the Ambience was mezerizing; the Food & the Staff was Extra Ordinary... The Manager/Owner??? visited our table several times and the Waitstaff was absolutely sure we were satisfied. If your looking for a ""filling"" on heavy soul food - you won't find it there; but if you want a very pleasant, enjoyable evening, this is the place. Pros: Best Service, Atmosphere, Right Crowd more

wonderful 2/16/2005

I enjoyed the dinning expierence, celebrated a retirement luncheon there with a group of friends. The food as well as service was very good and the deserts was wonderful. Pros: service, food , ambience Cons: poor parking more

Fantistic! 6/5/2004

As they say, location, location, location-in Detroit's Greektown. The food, and service is fantistic. Excellent for an individual, a couple, or a large group. Can I say more? Suggest you leave your kids at home--------why not bring them a doggie bag. Make reservations so you're not disappointed. Con-reservations may need to be made months in advance for holidays. more

Sweet Brunch 4/5/2004

I've have been to brunch at Sweet Georgia Brown's twice now. Even though the price is a little on the steep side it is well worth the money spent. The service is excellent. They are very accomidating. The food is out of this world especially if you are open to new experiences. Pros: great food, excellent service Cons: , parking more
