I will NEVER return 2/16/2011

I have been going to swampys for years now and it has been great ... up until recently... the last two times I have visited it has been AWFUL... The Service use to be great and now it feels like they do not give two craps if you come in and eat at their restuarant.. The food has been cold and portions have been downsized. The last time i went i ordered to go because we live close by and when i got home they forgot to give me half of my order and the other half was freezing cold. When i called to see what was going on they were extreamly rude and told me I was wrong and they double checked the bag... I assured them i was not wrong but they did not believe me and told me they would not replace my order... i wasnt asking for my money back i just wanted my food... The lady was extreamly rude and told me to quit asking for free food... Swampys you have lost a customer for life... its a shame because you use to be one of our families favorite restaurants. more

way over cooked crawfish 5/21/2010

Let me start off by saying that we have been to Swampy's before and eaten crawfish that was perfectly cooked.\r Today my sister, her fiance, and I decided to go back to Swampy's because we wanted to eat crawfish.\r We ordered 5 lbs and as we were trying to peel it I noticed how extremely difficult it was to peel, how dark red it was, and how tough the meat tasted.\r The shells were breaking off in pieces instead of unwrapping with ease like all other crawfish I've eaten in the past.\r On top of the shells breaking apart and cutting our fingers, the meat would not come out in one piece. It literally broke off in pieces as you tried pulling it from the shell.\r The taste of the meat was very rough, like over cooked shrimp. \r I had mentioned to our waitress that they were over cooked and she said ""oh it's because they're so big""\r I'm sorry but size has nothing to do with the cooking. I;ve eaten large crawfish before that wasn't like rubber to eat. \r I even asked the table sitting behind us who had also ordered crawfish if they thought it was overcooked and the first thing one of them said was ""ya and too difficult to peel, I've already cut my finger and I'm p*ssed""\r \r needless to say, we won't be going there from now on for Crawfish...even if it is cheaper. Pros: decent price Cons: crawfish way over cooked, bland oysters more

Cajun is good, Crawfish not so much 5/8/2010

Down on Hwy. 99, is a little restaurant that always has a full parking lot, and there is a good reason for that. Swampy's, a Cajun restaurant, prides itself on making down home southern cooking at an affordable price. And we are not talking small po-boys, these rival any Subway sandwich. The only downside that we encountered was there was no hostess to greet us, having us to find someone to help us out and the crawfish, although large in size, the flavor and spice was lacking. All in all, its a good restaurant, if you are feeling the Cajun fix. Pros: Great selection in Cajun food Cons: Crawfish not as spicy as I would like more

I am pleased 2/19/2010

I first went to Swampy's when my husband was on R & R. We wanted something diffent and we both LOVE cajun food however we were not in the mood to drive all the way to houston to get it. We arrived and were seated promptly. The Mait're Dee (sp?) even helped me find an outlet to charge my my cell phone.\r \r We received our food in a timely fashion and the waitress was very very nice. At this point After reading the prior review I guess I should point out that my husband is white and I am black, and we went to Swampy's with our two bi-racial daugthers. I would not say I noticed anyone being rude to him or myself on account of race. Perhaps the previous reviewer had a dirrent experience though because I have gone back several times and thats never been the case.\r \r The only reason I am giving Swampy's 4 stars instead of 5 is because \r \r 1. Its cold- unusually cold for a resturant\r 2. Although we paid less than half of what we usually paid at Pappadeux, the portions reflected that. Pros: Friendly Staff Fast Service Cons: Portion Size more

Do Not Recommend 4/30/2009

If you enjoy eating in an awkward atmosphere go to Swampy's. Let me be more specific, if you're a minority & and you enjoy eating in an awkward atmosphere to go Swmapy's. I will never step foot in that place again. My husband's hard earned money will NOT be spent there! We were there on Tuesday with our 5 yr old son & not only was our waitress horrible, we were also welcomed with disturbing, vexed stares by a group of regulars. It was so obvious that they were annoyed by our presence & the presence of other minorities that came in behind us. I cannot tolerate ignorance! I am multi-racial...I have Caucasian relatives and it is really embarrassing that some people don't know how to behave. This wasn't our first unpleasant experience at Swampy's, it was just the worst. Usually the service is bad, but when you combine bigotry in that equation...what's the point in contributing to their establishment. I don't recommend this place to anyone, regardless of their ethnicity. People should be treated with dignity & respect (can you tell I'm a nurse?). You won't get that at Swampy's. Rajin Cajun is MUCH better anyway. There are 4 locations in the Houston area...Sugar Land being the closest. Swampy's, no thanks. Pros: Good price during happy hour Cons: Uncomfortable atmosphere more

Not Authentic Food! 9/21/2008

This place was horrible. I am from New Orleans and my family is from Lafayette. I am used to eating food like this and I was excited to try it and I was humiliated! The gumbo is nothing like a true cajun gumbo and the seafood was asweful. It obviously wasn't cooked right. If they are going to advertise as a cajun restaurant then they should at least know what they are doing. I will never go back. Pros: The bar is fun to hang out at Cons: The food is aweful more

love this place! 3/30/2008

Great crawfish, awesome bisque, even more awesome creamy bisque! Great happy hour price on boiled shrimp and raw oysters, but only in the bar area. I even enjoyed the muffalotta (sp?) sandwich, but don't order the big one unless you are serious or planning on taking part of it home. We are regular customers, have tried quite a few items, and have never been disappointed. We have taken friends and family to try out Swampy's, and most are now regular customers themselves. The patio is great when the weather is right. Swampy's is now part of our weekly schedule! more

Not our best seafood experience! 10/8/2007

We did not enjoy our experience here on a Sunday evening. We were seated and attended to quickly, but that's about all the good I can say about it. The food was mediocre at best, and the portions were on the small side. For a family of 3 (2 adults and 1 child) we spent over $50 and walked out feeling not at all full. We can spend about that much at Babins for much better food and walk out feeling stuffed! There was no milk for my daughter, a 10 year old. I prefer to have healthy choices for children. We were never served bread or crackers before or with our meal. My seafood slad was pretty good in portion, but rather bland tasting. My husband got the combo fish and shrimp and received a very small portion. He even asked the waitress before hand how big the portions were and she said ""a very good size"". Being from Louisiana, the ambiance was what we expected, but the food was not. It was a waste of 50 hard earned dollars. We will not be going back when there are other, much better seafood restaurants in the Katy/West Houston area! Pros: great cajun ambiance! Cons: poor quality and value! more

worst crawfish and shrimp ever 5/6/2007

I called and asked how the crawfish was there. They said It was good size and in season. I can truly say that the 10 lbs. of crawfish and 3 dozen shrimps we ordered were by far the worst I have ever had. It is unbelievable how a restaurant could serve so many rotted, over salted, tiny crawfish and shrimp. I should have known when they said we couldn't order the crawfish on the phone and had to order it at the restaurant. If they get the crawfish ready early, it would get mushy. I have never heard of that before. The hostess couldn't answer simple questions, didn't give us our receipt, and couldn't even say bye or thank you when we we left. Basically, we couldn't even eat the crawfish and shrimp and threw it away. That was a waste of $67.00 that I spent. Don't waste your money or time here. We will never go back there again. Pros: visible from the freeway Cons: bad food and service more

Good service, but may be uncomfortable for some 2/13/2007

This was my second visit to Swampy's. My first visit was the night they opened and I ordered take out. I enjoyed the fried alligator the first time but neither my wife nor I cared for the gumbo. During our second visit, my wife had the Hamburger Steak and really enjoyed it. My son had the shrimp and fries - thumbs up. However, I ordered the chicken & sausage jambalaya and I was not impressed. I thought it was too soupy and not spicy enough. The service was good, especially given the heavy Sunday traffic. I must add that I was a little uncomfortable when I saw the Jim Ed's BlackBerry (Sambo-like image) sign as I walked out of the men's restroom. It was a little offensive for 2007 and made me feel that perhaps the owners may not be sensitive to Black customers such as myself. Pros: A lot of food, good service. Cons: A litle pricey for the suburbs. more

Great gumbo and oysters 1/27/2007

Went to Swampy's today around 12:30 in the afternoon and the place was hoppin. Lots of people enjoying good food. Wife had oysters on the half shell and a cup of seafood gumbo. I had a bowl of the chicken and sausage gumbo. She said the oysters were very cold and tasted clean and refreshing and she said her gumbo was wonderful. The chicken and sausage gumbo was thick and spicy and had an amazing flavor. Must have been the andouille sausage but it was phenomenal. Service was prompt and attentive. Highly recommend this place for good cajun food. Pros: great food, good sincere service more

THE BEST GUMBO!!! 1/17/2007

Great place. Great service. The best gumbo I've had. And a really cute place. Will definitely go back and enjoy their patio once it warms up a bit! Pros: Good food, good atmosphere Cons: None! more
