I finally found a dentist that is up to date with the times. 12/6/2010

""I finally found a dentist that is up to date with the times. Why is it that every other dentist I went to seemed to come from the 1920's? This office has new technology and uses modern techniques. The doctor was very nice and thorough in his examination. The staff was friendly and answered all of my questions. The best thing was that I don’t have a lot of time to take off work, so when my tooth broke and I needed to have it fixed they were able to fix it the same day! I didn’t have to come back weeks later to get the crown finished like my last dentist. Now my mouth is all back in one piece. Thanks so much! "" more

Thank you for making me smile again 11/29/2010

The staff is kind and caring, always making sure I am comfortable and willing to answer all of my questions. The procedures were performed professionally and painless Thank you for making me smile again. After years of hiding my smile with my hand, for the first time I have confidence, and people keep asking if I’ve lost weight or changed my hair! Little do they know the difference a smile can make. Thank you for giving me a new start. more

This place is one of the best 11/18/2010

After moving here, I tried many dentists in the Long Beach area with both HMO and PPO insurance. I am picky. After visiting a couple of dirty and rude places I came here. I also had a negative attitude to begin with, after the dentist told me all of my dental problems (their job, by the way) and how they can be improved. I was starting to get some pain in my back teeth. They scheduled me immediately when I said I was in pain. Their pictures clearly showed the cracks in my teeth due to a life time of fillings. I had to get a couple of root canals, which cost me about $30 each. The crowns were a fortune, but they are expensive everywhere. There is no such thing as a cheap crown. I didn't get the expensive ceramic crowns, like they recommended. They told me the full crowns would cause problem at the gum line. I thought they were trying to make more money. They were right, though. I wish I had listened and not felt like they were scamming me (obviously I am not the only one who got the impression). They said that I would need crowns on more molars soon, and I felt scammed and went to a PPO dentist recommended by a friend. I developed pain in another molar, and that dentist told me it was due to clinching teeth. When I had extreme pain he said it would cost $2000 to fix. I came back to LB Dental arts. Much better. They know what they are doing. I got the more expensive ceramic crown this time and it so comfortable that I wish I had done that before. No problems at all. Long Beach Dental Arts are so popular their office has tripled in size. Now the wait is not as long as it used to be, and they will always work around my schedule and change appointments at the last minute if I have a conflict. They are very friendly and it is very obvious that they want to save my teeth. I have compared prices. There isn't much difference with the HMO dentists. The prices are set by the insurance companies. That is a different story. The x-rays and pictures never cost me anything. If I am uncomfortable, they will adjust. They work with my schedule and are great for my child as well. The office is open until 7:30 so I don't have to take off work. The happy people don't seem to comment here much, obviously, but don't go in with a negative attitude by reading all of the other comments. Believe me, I have seen many dentists in the area, and probably over 20 offices in my adult life - with insurance (both HMO and PPO) and without insurance. This place is one of the best, if not the best, that I have ever experienced. I am very happy with Long Beach Dental Arts. Give them a try, and don't let the pictures or their announcement of your problems shock you. They have state of the art equipment and they do know what they are doing. more

Everyone was really nice 10/13/2010

Everyone was really nice, Ashley was a great help. The fact that she is empowered and can use discretion in decision making had a real difference in keeping me as a long term customer. As a consumer it is important to feel that you are working with us, not against us. Dental procedures are expensive but it helps when the staff can empathize with the patients. If there were discounts and deals or coupons it would really encourage more dental visits and new customers via word of mouth. more

Worst Dental Office I have EVER visited. 4/10/2009

This was my first visit to this office. When I arrived the receptionist told me that I needed to go to a different reception room accross the hall. There was not a soul in that room although I waited almost ten minutes. While I was waiting I noticed that a patient's forms with his personal information (social security number, date of birth, address, and medical information) was sitting on the desk in plain sight... just waiting for some untrustworthy person to steal his identity. I went back to the first reception area to tell them that nobody was there and got a curt response that the receptionist was helping other patients but would be there shortly. I was finally brought in to see the dentist's ""assistant"", and tipped backward while asked to hold two metal hooks to pull my cheeks open so she could position a mirror in my open mouth and snap several photos with a point and shoot camera. (I thought this was very strange as I have never been asked to do this at any other dentist's office). When at last I saw the dentist, he informed me that I had ""several cavities"", including one tooth that needed a crown, and that all of my previous fillings were chipping and needed to be replaced. I thought this was odd, as it had only been about eight months since visiting my last dentist and everything was just fine at that time. I was then brought into a small office where a ""salesperson"" proceeded to tell me that it was going to cost $3000.00 (after insurance) to complete all of the necessary procedures. She had a diffucult time explaining why the procedures were necessary and why they cost so much when I had insurance, and said something to the effect that ""the dentist knows best what needs to be done, even if we don't understand it all"". She then proceded to tell me that I could set up a payment plan for $250 per month. I declined to make another appointment, and plan on requesting duplicates of the xrays so that I can find a different dentist. What a nightmare. Also, my boyfriend was in the waiting room while I was with the dentist and he said that the receptionist was on a personal phone call the entire time and actually put patients on hold in order to continue her conversation. Pros: Parking more

a good dentist / specialist 3/12/2009

My wife and i are both over 65 with a lot of dental work to have done. We went to two other dental offices and were terribly disappointed with the service and asked some friends who they go to. I went to see Dr. Sunderland and found him to be patient, understanding, and careful not to overwhelm us. We were directed to a specialist within his office and treated again with understanding to our needs and limited funds. the first part of our work has just been completed, we are on a very comfortable paymnt plan, and are looking forward to completeing the work. I read other reviews of this office ans was amazed at what was written. Their experiences were so different then mine. This is a warm and proffesional office. more

5 stars for this dentist office 2/27/2009

I would not change anything, how it's operated works perfect. I was really impressed with the receptionist, lab techs., financial/insurance consultant, dentist, the exam/xray experience and all other services provided.( I wish I could remember everyone by name!) The staff are very professional, friendly, informed and make you feel extra comfortable. I would rate the dental team as excellent! :) Valarie P. Pros: warm atmosphere. very professional Cons: parking is sometimes tough as they share a parking lot with WAMU bank more

All they see in patients are dollar signs 12/10/2007

When I first arrived at the office, the front office staff were pretty courteous and quick in handling my paperwork. But when I get in the chair to get my cleaning done, the hygienist was ROUGH. my gums hurt for days. She claimed that I was bleeding really bad but considering how rough she was, I can't discount her harsh handling. I""ve been with other RDHs and they had a much smoother and gentler touch than this one. Although she did try to make small talk, I felt like she was rushing so she can finish up, pack me off and push me out so she can get to the next patient. Her cell phone kept on going off too during my visit. I don't think that's very professional. Then when I mentioned I was considering changing out my silver fillings, I had to wait half an hour for the doctor spend less than 5 minutes with me to tell me that ""yes their office could do that procedure"". What really finally pushed me off the edge was that the dr told me to sit and wait. I waited for 25 minutes and no one showed up. I had a meeting to go to and when I walked to the front desk, the girl that's supposed to handle billing was busy chattng it up with some guy and opening up junk mail, while some of the staff was eating lunch. It was pretty annoying. They have some interesting technology there with the moniters and xrays, but the office is kind of shabby looking and very cramped. When my husband went in, they told him he needed all this work done, like as simple as changing a filling for $900 per tooth. I've gone to other places where its been less than $200. They obvious care more about billable work than their patients. Pros: plenty of parking Cons: Overall patient care, poor to nonexistent billing and insurance explanations more
