Consistently Great 3/13/2011

We try to eat here every month and it's always a great meal. I normally get sashimi, but have tried almost everything on the menu and am always satisfied. The mussels appetizer is one of my favorites! more

Very good actually. 5/13/2010

I had the sashimi and it was very fresh and tasty. The waitress was really attentive, which is rare in a lot of restaurants. I don't know how it compares to other places in Raleigh as a whole, but near NCSU campus it's by far the best japanese place. Pros: The best real sushi near NCSU Cons: A little pricy. more

NOT GOOD. AT ALL. 4/28/2010

The only good thing about Sushi Tsune was our friendly waitress. Other than that, the food was poor (NOT fresh--i was actually concerned to eat it), the restaurant cramped with less than desirable seating options, and relatively poor service (food delivered quickly, but water not filled, check not picked up, table sticky, etc.) I'm actually from the area, and am an avid sushi lover. I didn't think trying a new place would have been such a waste of time, but unfortunately I was wrong. (I actually had to keep from laughing when the rolls were delivered b/c they were wrapped so poorly they were falling apart.)? Pros: we left Cons: it was gross... more

Truly Authentic Japanese Food 9/25/2009

If you want to experience authentic Japanese food, this is the place to go. If you are looking for fusion or wannabe Japanese food then you need to go somewhere else. Service can definitely improve however the owner's hospitality and the delicious food make up for it. I've been to Japan a number of times and Sushi Tsune is as close as I'll ever get to eating in Nagoya or Tokyo while living in Raleigh. more

Good sushi, reasonable prices, doesn't try to be ""cool"" 6/1/2009

I went there with my wife. The place lacks the ""hip"" atmosphere you find at many sushi places. We found the food to be excellent and Tsune-san is always friendly. Contrary to other reports on here the wait staff was on the ball. She was friendly and our glasses were never empty. We did have to wait for what seemed like an unusually long time for our food (>45min) for reasons not entirely clear to me - the place was fairly busy but definitely not packed. Wonder if they will let me call in my order before I get there next time? This place is easy to miss between the giant Arby's sign and the BP, but in my opinion it's some of the best sushi in town. Pros: Good sushi, authentic atmosphere, tsune-san Cons: Long wait more

Great sushi, conveniently located on Hillsborough Street 5/30/2009

Sushi Tsune serves up great sushi--no frills. My boyfriend and I ended up spending a lot here--mainly because we were drinking beer and sake, but overall it's pretty moderately/fairly priced. Don't be discouraged by the outside of the building--the inside of the restaurant is clean and intimate. Our waitress was a bit standoffish at first, but she soon warmed up to us and had some great recommendations for ""real"" sushi that I had never tried. Definitely recommend eating here--support Hillsborough Street!! Pros: Yummy sushi Cons: Outside of building appears dumpy more

Just another sushi place? 5/5/2009

I've been to many Japanese restaurants in the area, and despite the fact that I get something different every time I go to Sushi Tsune, I'm still failed to be impressed in the end. Things are way to pricey for what they offer. My friends have paid nearly fifteen dollars for their entire meals only to get a few pieces of so-called chicken teriyaki and their drinks, not including any sushi we may split. And there isn't anything too unique about their rolls, either...I'd love to come more if I didn't have issues with [one or two of] the waitresses there or if the prices were a bit more...reasonable...But I like their dressing. I think. Pros: It's been quiet the few times I've been, which I like... Cons: The waitstaff. I don't really like the way they treat me... more

Awesome Tuna Sushi 8/23/2008

Outside looks a little run down but the inside is cute and very clean. Food-wise OMG!! Sushi was wonderful. The tuna almost melts in your mouth. There is a great ratio of fish to rice and they are not stingy on the ginger like other sushi places. The staff was very attentive and the service great. I can't say enough about the sushi. We live 1 1/2 hours away and this is the best reason to make the drive. Pros: Food and service Cons: Outside exterior may dicourage people more

Okay 4/1/2008

I used to go here all the time. In the beginning, I had nothing bad to say about them and only praises. That was till I worked for them, and then was replaced, and then it lost it's best waitress and other employees. Since Tsune-san has redone his staff they are less welcoming, I've had to repeat orders before and still gotten them wrong, and sometimes it would take them half an hour just to get a refill on water. They don't have the same warmth that the old waitresses did. The food is also isn't as good. I have actually tried other sushi places in the area, and, although a lot of them don't handmake their tamago like tsune-san does, they definitely have better food for better prices. They have raised the prices which makes it harder to fit even a simple lunch meal into a budget. The veil has definitely been removed for me. Japan Inn and Waraji is so much better. Pros: Warm welcome, Ambience Cons: Parking, Price, Freshness, Originality, Staff more

A little Tokyo jewel in Raleigh, NC! 2/4/2008

A truly authentic Japanese sushi bar in Raleigh! Small, quaint, and excellent sushi. If you are looking for true Japanese sushi, then you have found a little piece of Tokyo in North Carolina. Great wait staff and a delightful Japanese atmosphere. Enjoy! Pros: Excellent Japanese sushi. Reflects a real Japanese sushi bar. Cons: Small by American standards. more

Meh... 11/12/2007

It's cheaper than the other local sushi spots, but there's a reason. I mean, it's not BAD, but it's not GREAT either. The service is okay, the menu is okay, the food is okay. All-in-all, it's ""okay."" Pros: cheap! Cons: generic dining experience more

really good food 10/26/2007

Really good sushi and authentic food. Lunch specials are awsome. Service is mediocre but its worth it for the food. There's not much seating available so during lunch it gets a little crowded. Great food. Pros: sushi Cons: small restaurant more

Fantastic little Sushi Place 8/28/2007

We've been here many, many times and are always excited to go back. Delicious appetizers (we love the shrimp dumplings and a bowl of edamame) followed by tasty and beautifully-prepared sushi or sashimi. My husband sometimes gets one of the teriyaki/tempura combos and they are always good, and almost worth passing up the sushi for - especially since the combos are served with a delicious potato salad. Pros: Fresh Sushi, Friendly Service Cons: Parking, Small Size May Mean Longer Waits more

The BEST sushi restuarant in the Triangle! 8/17/2007

Though this sushi restaurant may be small and elderly, the food and the service is outstanding. This is one of only 2 or 3 sushi restaurants actually owned and run by a Japanese sushi chef. This chef is an expert at cutting the fish and knowing what is good sashimi and what is not. You can't go wrong with what you order here. We have been to all the fancy-schmancy sushi restaurants in the Triangle and this one is the BEST! Pros: Sashimi is fresh and tasty, not rubbery or fatty. Cons: Decor is older, but still very functional. more

I will not visit again 5/25/2007

Bad location, not very clean, not very good sushi, and I would not eat there again. more

Una-don made me sick. 4/8/2007

Well, I might've chosen to go at a rather busy time for Sushi Tsune. A weekday at lunchtime. However, I was seated promptly and waited for my guest to arrive. I was not served tea or anything while waiting. I simply had to sit and wait. And wait I did. My guest was late. The waitress then asked me if I was ""sure"" they were coming, because the restaurant was filling up. Being a waitress myself, I know she could've asked this in a nicer way. Or at least given me some freakin' tea. Pros: Clean place Cons: Nasty Eel more

Want to eat raw chicken? 3/16/2007

Then this is your place. Unfortunately if you order a meal that has undercooked chicken and this displeases you, expect to pay for it. I spoke to the server about my undercooked (raw) chicken and she said I still had to pay for it. The owner of the restaurant (sushi chef) told us that is just how it is prepared. After pleading my case in front of the entire restarurant (only about 12 tables) he finally agreed to take it off my bill. It was pretty embarrasing. I would think the owner a restaurant would want to makes his guests happy and be returning customers. This is definitely not the case here. Since this is not the place for chicken, I also tried the sushi which is their specialty, or so I thought. None of the sushi was fresh. Portions were small. Overall for what you get, it is very pricey. The service is not great. My server actually didn't notice that I hadn't touched my mean until it came time for the check. Unbelievable! I do not recommend this restaurant! Cons: Everything more
