Disappointing Sushi Experience in Los Gatos 11/23/2007

We just moved from SF and have been eager to try the local sushi scene. What a disappointment. The rice was warm and soggy. The rolls were flavorless - we couldn't taste the crab in the Spider roll and even the CA Roll was unmemorable and tasteless. To top if off, we didn't even get a hello or thank you for our pricey take out order. Save your money and order pizza instead. more

the best sushi i ever had!!! 9/20/2006

My friend told me about this place long time ago, but never had chance to go try it out until last month, and omg, I loved it so much! specially the spider roll, you have to order that! and trust me, you will never regret it after you try it!!!! small but very cozy! try the Zero roll too! It is a hand roll with no rice in it. I have never had that before but after i try it I can't stop thinking about it. so i went back last week and took my brother there, he loved it too! Can't wait to go back again! more

Bad Sushi 9/20/2006

Nigiri Sushi requires fresh special rice prepared specifically for this application . Their rice for the sushi was worse than Uncle Ben's. I hope Americans don't consider this to be authentic Nigiri Sushi. Stay away from this place! more

WOW!!! 7/26/2006

My girlfriend and I are food lovers by every definition of the term. We enjoy all cuisines and consider eating and cooking great food a hobby. Needless to say we eat out at a lot of different restaurants and citysearch has proved an excellent and consistent tool over the past 2 years (since I was introduced to it). I kid you not, we use this site ANY/EVERY time we are thinking of going out to eat.\r dsfd\r I'm sure you appreciate the biography :-p but I wanted to emphasize the extent to which we love food and use this site for scouting out new places. The reason I want to emphasize this is because after eating at Sushi on the Run, I was compelled to sign up (and probably submit my email address to even more spam) and write a review.\r \r ATMOSPHERE: The place is extremely small and I had a hard time finding it as I am out of town on business and its on a crowded street lined on both sides by shops and restaurants. Its in fact so small that I walked by it (after crusing the street up and down twice). Its literally a door inbetween two shops. When you walk in, there is NO room and only 8 stools surrounding the sushi-man. Yes you read correct, only 8 ppl can eat at a time. But you get to watch sushi-man hand roll every order less than 2 ft away. Its definitely a skill and an art. everyone is extremely friendly.\r \r FOOD: Food was excellent. I'm such a writing tard that my words could never do it justice. I order 2 salmon nigiri and 2 tuna nigiri (slab of fish on ball of rice), and 2 excellent specials (total $30 including tip and a coke -- thanks corporate card ;-). The portions of fish are monsterous (2.5 large bites for nigiri) and so tender and fresh.\r \r OVERALL: Easily the best sushi place I have ever been to. Small little dive location makes this restaurant one of those little treasures that you stumble upon once every 5 years. I will DEFINITELY be back next time I am in the SJ/SF area. Pros: Great Food; Entertaining to Watch; Super Friendly Atmosphere Cons: Small (8 seats - but this could be a plus); No Bathroom; more

Authentic sushi that melts in your mouth 6/4/2006

After living in Japan for 3 years, I came back in 1999 and had not found a good sushi bar -- until now. Sushi on the Run has some of the most authentic, delicious sushi anywhere. Despite the unassuming nature of this place, the chef knows his stuff. The fish is soft and tender; never ever tough or fishy. The rice is soft with the right amount of vinegar. There best items on the menu are not the complicated rolls, but the simple maguro, hamachi, and unagi nigiri. Many U.S. sushi bars use refrigerated rice, but authentic sushi bars in Japan usually use room-temperature rice, which is tastier and softer. On the other hand, very warm rice (mentioned by another reviewer) is bad; it could cook the fish. When I visited, the rice was just right. I will be coming down regularly from San Francisco to eat here! Pros: authentic, fresh, authentic! Cons: small, no decor more

Not supposed to use fresh sushi rice!!! 12/31/2005

They used freshly made sushi rice for their rolls and nigiri. While this sounds great, it ruins the taste of the fish because the rice is warm and still moist. Sushi rice should be used when cooled. But this may be just because we showed up for lunch at noon and they just made the first batch of rice. In anycase, rice should have been made earlier or use rice from an earlier batch. Fish was not bad, I'd give it 3 out of 5 for freshness and quality. Very small restaurant, just 8 seats at the bar. Not bad to try it out, but not worth going out of your way for. Pros: quality of fish, exotic rolls, hole in the wall feel Cons: limited seating, warm moist rice, hole in the wall feel more

ultimate fish 10/5/2005

probably the freshest fish in town. by looking at all the little coolers stacked up, i wouldn't be surprised if the sushi chef caught the fishes himself. small space, but the fish melts in your mouth! prices are fair considering the freshness of the fish, space is squishy so wouldn't recommend a large party or even haning out. definitely made to eat and go. Pros: fresh fish, quick service, good rolls Cons: 8 people capacity more

There is no reason to go anywhere else 3/17/2004

Unless you can't get a seat (there are only 8 available) there is no reason to go anywhere else. I eat here a few times a month for and I have never been disappointed. A friend of mine from out of town visited a year ago, tried the sushi here, and recently confessed she is still craving the salmon and can't wait to visit again. My favorite dinner is a fresh salmon (they also have smoked) and yellowtail sashimi combo, some unagi nigiri, and a couple of their awesome rolls. They offer a great lunch special if you want to try a little of this, a little of that, and of course takeout if the sit-down customers haven't already eaten everything. Pros: freshest fish, knowledgeable staff, creative menu more
