No wait for you! 1/8/2010

I've been looking for a sushi place that doesn't involve waiting for 2 hours before I am seated. I am impatient and want to satisfy my sushi craving immediately. Hidden in a strip mall off of SE 82nd, this delicious sushi gem awaits to satisfy you. The state rolls are a modern twist on traditional sushi and I've only had 1 or two rolls that I didn't prefer. The fish is fresh and service is quick, making it the perfect combination. Pros: seated promptly, fresh ingredients, amazing quality Cons: somewhat pricey more

Pretty darn good 3/25/2009

The food was quite good, both the cooked meals and the sushi. The sushi rice was cooked and flavored perfectly. While the large portions helped to make up for the higher prices, it would be nice to have the option of getting smaller amounts and trying more. Pros: Large portions, comfortable, friendly waitstaff Cons: Relatively pricey more

Yummy sushi! 3/15/2009

I am shocked at samurai's experience as I am a regular at Sushi and Maki's, I think he has this place mistaken for another. They make great sashimi and the miso soup is delish. My daughter always has their children's lemon chicken and the portion is plenty (6 oz. filet with 1 cup of rice) and it doesn't come with ice cream... Sam (the owner) is always there and very friendly as are Sunny and Ryan (waitress and sushi chef). I go there at least twice a month Pros: fresh ingredients, friendly owner Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

boo!!! 1/24/2009

This is the worst japanese restaurant I have ever had in town. As a native Japanese, I don't think I can call those foods are japanese meal. The miso soup is so thin and tasted low calorie veggi-soup for sick people. The sushi is ok but rice's quality is low. They charge a cup of green tea for a doller each which tasted like a water. Kid's meal is a joke, a couple of chiken slices and just one icecream scoop of rice for $6! I am very disappointed and I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Cons: prices are very high but not worth of money more

Consistently Outstanding 9/9/2008

This is what a sushi restaurant should be. Fresh ingredients, excellent service, and an always present owner making sure things are as they should be. The Ohio roll is perfect for shrimp lovers! Baked mussels are an excellent starter, and the menu has many kid and non suchi alternatives that are quite tasty.\r \r Having eaten at many a sushi spot, we travel a litle ways to this one as it never lets us down. Keep up the good work!! Pros: Great menu, fresh fish more

Best Sushi in town! 4/15/2008

After a four year Sushi-hiatus and a move out to Milwaukee, I decided it was time to try again. Oh, I'd had a few California Rolls after ""the incident,"" and four years of not being able to look at a roll, but I was really starting to miss real sushi. I just happened to be driving down 82nd one day when I saw a little hole in the wall Sushi place, so I decided that for dinner my boyfriend and I would be trying Sushi & Maki. We sat doen and he ordered off of their Japanese menu (Tonkatsu pork. . .AMAZING) and I had a firld day ordering all kinds of rolls. You get an amazingly fresh tasting cucumber salad and miso soup when you order a dinner. We also ordered the pan fried gyoza and ika tempura. . .OH LORD! So amazing. Everything was so good that we went back the very next night!!! The interior is really cute, the staff is incredibly friendly and best of all you get TONS of sushi for your money. When we left, I was so full I took my sushi home and ate it as a midnight snack! Forget every other sushi place you've ever been to. . .Sushi & Maki is the only way to go! Pros: You get a lot of food for your $$$, THE FOOD!!!, friendly staff, red bean ice cream, the list goes on Cons: None (well, I didn't like the green tea ice cream, but I just won't get it again!) more

Highly recommended! 8/5/2007

I didn't expect to find fantastic sushi tucked off of 82nd, but I was pleasantly surprised by Sushi & Maki. We ordered a variety of rolls, including a few of their ""state rolls"", that were all incredibly fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was very nice with helpful and friendly staff. Forget expensive sushi closer into town -- this is my new sushi spot. I will definitely be back! Pros: Fresh sushi, great price, friendly staff Cons: Location more

great sushi, low price, and friendly staff. what else do you want?? 6/24/2007

although we live nearby this relatively new place (they opened last year), we hadn't been to this restaurant until one of our friends told us to check it out. it is easy to miss when one drives around on the 82nd avenue because it is not right on the main street. \r we were immediately greeted by the staff when we entered. it wasn't' packed but the atmosphere was lively. there were families with young ones, couples, and etc. we sat at the sushi bar and ordered vegetable tempura to start off. to our surprise, the tempura was exceptional. we have been to those ""fancy"" sushi places around Portland but we don't always get what we pay for. we didn't expect to get top-notch tempura at this small, local restaurant but we did. \r then off to nigris (sushi). it's $2 to $4 for 2 pieces of nigris. the price is what you would expect. it was fresh and tasty. supposedly this place has a wide selection of rolls called ""state rolls."" Rolls are dirt cheap. $3 to $6. some were in sub-$3 range. we paid $7-9 for the same rolls at other places. despite its low price, the quality of rolls were excellent. if you're a bargain hunter, i recommend their rolls.\r i had miso soup with my dinner and my wife ordered Udon. the owner told us that his wife makes the soup from scratch unlike many other places where we use the pre-made soup. it definitely had gourmet quality to it. \r for desert, we had green tea ice cream as usual. they also have mochi ice cream on the menu.\r \r bottom line: top-notch tempura, fresh sushi and very reasonably priced. also superb service. we will definitely go back. more
