If you know Japanese food well, don't go there. 2/21/2010

i am an asian. comparing to different japanese restaurants i have been in the u.s., this one is the worst so far. their rice could not reach any of my criterion. I like to sit in front of the sushi bar and see how the chef works on the food so that i can feel how the chef treats the food. I didn't see what i wanted to see or i have seen from the chef, which was love, respect and carefulness while preparing the food. this disappointed me most. my friend, who is an american loves this restaurant, but if you are sure you know what good sushi tastes like, don't go there. Cons: Rice failed to reach any of my criterion. more

Great Sushi, Great Price 9/12/2009

My partner and I have been going to Sushi Gen since they opened and have not ever been disappointed. I have consistently found the rice to be proportionate to the size of the piece of fish, the fish to be wonderfully fresh and the all you can eat section large and satisfying. They do not have all you can eat sashimi, nor could they afford to for the prices that they charge. There simply would be no way to maintain the quality that they maintain at the price they charge if there were no rules or limits. So yes there is an eat what you order clause, and they bring you your order a roll or two at a time so that if you get full before your order is complete they wont have to charge you. Pros: Fresh, tasty sushi more

Great sushi ! 9/12/2009

I have to say that this is the best sushi in town. This place should be called Sushi GEM instead of Sushi Gen because that's what it is, a real gem in a sea of lack luster sushi bars in Albuquerque. Everything is fresh, well prepared and you just can't beat the price. The wait staff is always friendly, courteous and helpful if you are a sushi novice and have any questions. I have never had a bad meal here. I have introduced many people to this restaurant. Everyone has loved it and couldn't wait to bring there friends to try it. The eel is truly out of this world and the crunch roll is a must try. They have a great selection of specialty rolls, as well as the traditional style of sushi, sashimi and appetizers. There is a bar, so you can enjoy watching the sushi being prepared, and tables and booths to enjoy the company of friends and family while having a great meal. The atmosphere is quiet and calm and the decor is understated but comfortable. It's not a fancy sushi joint but the food will have you coming back again and again. They offer an all you can eat sushi menu and a regular menu to order individual rolls, sushi and sashimi. The all you can eat menu does say that you will be a charge for any uneaten sushi including rice. But for the price, I think it's very fair deal. Pros: Fresh fish, great wait staff, comfortable atmosphere. more

DON'T GO unless looking for ""all the rice you can eat sushi"" and have no idea of what sushi is supposed to be 11/18/2007

Commerical looked fantastic, very excited to try it. Advertised all you can eat sushi for $15.95, on tv sushi looked fresh and much variety. After finally finding it, store front looked desolated, but I figured maybe this is a hidden gem. WRONG!. We sat down and ordered off the all you can eat menu. Selection was ok but hey we figured for the price, it would do. We ordered 4 rolls and 3 pieces of sushi for 2 ppl. Oh and top of menu also stated, any sushi, or RICE left would be charged at full price??? Food finally arrives and the first thought is....""Where is the actual sushi filling?"" They should just rename everything RICE ROLL, RICE SUSHI. Oh! and not to mention we ordered green tea to drink and was served hot water with a ""green tea bag"". It in no way smelled or tasted like green tea. After 2 bites, I wasnt sure if I would be able to eat any thing else because there was so much rice. I proceeded to take some of the rice off so it would resemble a normal piece of sushi, but now I was in fear of being charged full price. I also noticed that only 3 out of my 4 rolls were served. They never bothered to bring it over until we finished the 3rd roll first. What the hell? are we in our parents kitchen where we have to finish whats on our plates first before we can get some more? At this point, we were quite agravated. It was such a waste of money and time. We will NEVER go back. Save yourself and stay clear of this place more
