What happened????? 11/10/2010

The good...Food is great, love the wraps, burgers, wings etc...\r The bad is that about a year ago the bar went under new management and the place went semi-upscale and the service went to crap..I was a once a week, at least customer, but now maybe once a month....The wait staff seems to have been turned over and the replacements are that good....I recomment City Beverage for a better time more

Feel like cheated 8/2/2010

Early this summer we went there for dinner after shopping at Southpoint mall. Having a citipass book in the car, we decided to try one in the book. We ordered two entrees and one order of wings as appetizer. The food was nothing special. Wings might be above average, but ribs are leaning to the bad side. What really sets this location apart from the others is the owner/managers' interpretation of their BOGO coupon policy. He pointed to the words on the coupon that they didn't state ENTREE but ITEM. So, the free item goes to the cheapest appetizer instead of the cheaper entree. He is gracious enough not to treat drink as a dinner item. Thank, but we definitely won't come back again, although I don't thinkg the owner/manager really cares. Pros: outside seating Cons: Owner/manager doen't seem to value customers more

New Ownership July 2009 6/12/2010

First let me state that I am the owner of the Sunset Grille at Sutton Station in Durham. My wife and I purchased this location in July 2009, and are different owners than the Sunset Grille in Cary.\r \r Since the purchase we have replaced all of the TV's, remodeled the restrooms and patio area (adding new seating and lots of plants) and instituted a guest loyalty program. \r \r We value our guests and believe that you will find a culture among staff that is friendly and helpful. As in any business, there are times when we may fall short of our guest's expectations. When this happens we want to hear from you regarding your experience and we will do whatever it takes to remedy the situation.\r \r I know that most businesses make this claim, however many fall short of their promise. If you ever visit my establishment and have a problem that is not handled to your satisfaction, I urge you to call me directly on my cell phone so that I can make sure your issue issue is resolved in a timely and appropriate manner.\r \r I can be reached at 919-810-8410\r \r sincerely,\r \r Dan Richardson\r Owner more

Worst service ever.... 10/5/2008

Sunset Grille is a neighborhood bar unwilling to serve its most dependable customers. I have been going there every Friday for the past 2 years. This past Friday was my last. I ordered a drink watched the server, serve 3 tables before me! This would have been okay had they ordered before me, but that was not the case. HE NEVER EVEN BOTHERED TO APOLOGIZE! There have been multiple servers that don't ask if anything is needed, They bring drinks when they want, they have gotten attitudes when asking for something or they just don't come to the table at all. I have spoken the owner (the one with the striped pants) and he said that maybe the servers were having a bad night (every Friday is their ""bad night""). Absolutely not, he's running his establishment into the ground. Service should be given with a smile and as prompt as possible. That is crucial in making a restaurant run well. Bottom-line is Sunset Grille is a poor excuse for a restaurant. I and several of my friends will be taking our money elsewhere! DO NOT GO HERE! more

Good bar for drinking beer, worse knowledgeable bartender within 10-15 miles. 3/23/2008

This place has an above average appearance and appears clean and would be a good beer drinking establishment, yet when asking for a mixed drink - you would have better luck with a blind bartender. Bought an amaretto sweet -n - sour and for those who don't know, it's fairly easy to make..\r \r Ingredients: 1 1/2 oz amaretto 3 oz sour mix\r \r Directions: Shake and strain into lowball glass or serve straight in sour glass.\r Garnish cherry and orange slice.\r \r Knowledgeable bartender and customer service is their weakness, horrible drink and a unappreciative rude owner who refused to offer something as replacement or refund, I don't need to cheat the bar, I can pay the bill.. I just would have found this bar a ""decent bar"" if the owner would have apologized, offer something else or credited me, the bill was $32 already for the wine for my friend that was delightfully enjoyed. I waited ten mins. for the owner, after he appeared and spoke unfriendly and left, the waitress took another ten mins or so trying to avoid the table.. \r \r Simple = love beer and able to keep the communication at min. with the staff and watch the game preferably at the bar itself so you are more likely to be acknowledge and waited on quicker, good bar.. Love a knowledgeable bartender that can mix alcoholic drinks with a friendly attentive staff at a table, then AVOID THIS BAR. more

Avoid this place at all costs! 10/25/2007

Me and a buddy also from the food service industry went there for a few drinks after work and got very good service from an Elise, Alyse or whatever her name is from Miami for the first 2-3 hours (got there at around 11pm or so, after a hard day's work at a neighboring 5-star restaurant). At first she was very sweet, attentive and talkative, even throughout our whole time there. Come 2am or so, we were the only customers left, so much to our surprise, she quickly told us: ""guys, you have 4 mins. to finish your drinks and get out of here"" in a very rude and obnoxious manner. As me and my buddy were gulping down our last beers after tipping her more than 20% on our $40 tap ($10 to be more exact), my buddy asked her if he ""could use the bathroom"" before we headed out. Her answer? ""No, we're closed already,"" even though the front door was still open.\r \r So, not only did she say we had to basically leave the premises right there and then in a very rude and obnoxious manner, but she also told my buddy that he wasn't allowed to use the bathroom neither. When my buddy asked her ""why not?,"" she said it was her ""manager's"" decision (some guy who used to bartend over at Satisfactions in downtown Durham) and that there was ""nothing she could about it"" either.\r \r Bottom line is that ""I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN, period"" The service here is TERRIBLE! Had I said any of those things to anyone of my guests over where I work at, I would've gotten fired instantly! more

Drink the bottled beer for cheap! 10/3/2007

All I have to say is that if you want to evaluate a place that serves food go checkout the bathrooms. Sunset is as nasty as it gets...you are gambling if you get food there. Drink specials are good, waitstaff should be made to at least clean/wash their shirts before they work. Pros: Beer specials Cons: Food, not clean more

really bad food 7/2/2007

This place is good in that it has an outdoor seating area (always a plus). At first we were seated indoors in the ""non-smoking section"" which had people smoking 10 feet away while playing video games. My review only concerns the food, as I have not tried the drinks. The food is cheap, but very bad. I had calamari as an appetizer, which was very shriveled and dry served with what my husband thinks is chili. I had a salad with tuna - the tuna was good but the lettuce was low quality. My husband's Philly cheesesteak wasn't good either. I will never go to this place again even though it is close to my house. ANY place at Southpoint is better than this, as is next-door Bocci. Pros: good prices, nice outdoor seating Cons: terrible food more

New favorite place 1/19/2006

Not sure what others are complaining about. We frequent this place, and always have a wonderful time and good service. Dave, one of the owners, is a fixture here, and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty and work. AJ is an awesome bartender. Food is just average, but priced well, and plenty of selection. Late night menu is a bonus. Sundays are great here for watching games, etc. Very fun! Pros: friendly staff, good drink specials, late night menu Cons: sometimes smokey more

Horrible place 11/7/2005

I used to frequent this grill often, but it seems the food and atmosphere has gone down hill. the management isn't very friendly and the food isn't very good. I would not recommend the restaurant to anyone. Take your money elsewhere. Cons: service, food, food more

Excellent! 8/10/2005

The food is great, the staff and management very friendly and helpful! I love going to a restaurant that makes me feel welcome and serves up some great food!! Pros: Great Food, Prompt Seating, Friendly Staff more

Great Spot 5/27/2005

Everything is good about this place; reasonable prices on really good food. more

Management Concerns 4/5/2005

I visited Sunset Grille during an afternoon off-peak time and experienced the owners being standoff-ish and rude. While the staff seemed eager to help, the impression the owners conveyed to me (and their own staff who witnessed their behavior to me) was one of carelessness and inactivity (i.e., they just sat around in their back room w/feet propped up using their computer while I was standing around waiting to be seated). Let's hope Sunset Grille's staff is more professional than their management and doesn't follow their, ahem, ""leadership."" Don't waste your time eating here when there are other venues much more eager to please their customers. more

I love this place. 3/2/2005

It doesn't hurt that I live close by, but man I love Sunset Grille. The food is always, always delicious (try the coconut chicken sandwich or the fantastic ribs), and the service is very good. I am so grateful that the owners chose our part of southeast Durham to open shop. Perfect for a quick bite, after work beer, or night out with friends. Pros: great food, excellent service, best value around more

The paper was right on 9/1/2004

I stop in after I saw the review in the durham herald on Friday the 27th. I was pleasantly suprised to see that it wasn't just someone writing something to fill space. The food was excellent and the service was right on time. I went with the paper recommendation of the Jambalaya and my friend had the Ribeye steak. It was awesome the jamabalaya was spiceyand filling, and my friend said his steak was as good as he could get at Angus Barnfor half the price. We live only a couple miles from Sunset Grille and will definitely be heading back for more great food. It sure beats messing with the mall traffic. Pros: Great food, Good Parking, Service more
