The food was quick, relatively inexpensive and greasy! The coffee was bitter to boot. I'm not sure why people rave about this place as much as they do. There are better choices...

Grungy, Delicious, and Awesome 3/6/2010

If you're hankerin for a delicious, no-frills breakfast, Sunnyside Up is your place. But don't go in with high expectations. This is your classic, grungy, breakfast joint and that's exactly what's to love about it. There's a reason there's usually a line out the door if you get there after 9am on the weekend. We're regulars and, as with any other restaurant, there are great experiences and not so great, but that doesn't stop us from coming back. I've never been disappointed in anything I've ordered. The biscuits and gravy rock as do any of their egg dishes. If I had one complaint that they don't serve good chocolate milk. Oh, and be careful with the blue corn pancakes. I've never ordered them myself, but I've dined with people who have. They are supposed to be delicious, but you may regret the decision about a half an hour after you're done dining. Sorry if that was TMI, but don't say you weren't warned. Pros: Tasty food, extremely laid back, cheap Cons: extremely laid back, cheap more

Don't bother.. 4/3/2009

We were rudely treated upon arrival and told to wait outside in the cold - which we refused to do. We then waited for twenty minutes before being seated at a dirty table with ripped furniture and handed a menu that had not been wiped off in a month. I can't comment on the food because we waited over fifteen minutes for a server to arrive which never happened. It might be added that the overall unkept appearance of the place and it's employees made me question what the kitchen mightblook like. After spending most if my life in the restaurant business, I would say that this place does a great job illustrating what NOT to do. Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Bad Service 11/15/2008

I was recommended this place by a friend. I'd gone on a really busy Sunday morning, waited for an half an hour. Was seated and waited an HOUR for our breakfast which was eggs and toast.... The people next to us waited were seated after us and waited 45 minutes for their food and the server offered them free drinks...and yet we were not. The people working there were looking somewhat dirty and sweaty and we should have left. But we ate and it was good, although I still can't believe we waited an hour and they didn't offer any sort of compensation. I told the waitress that she served the people next to us before us and were given free drinks and I thought that the same should be done for us, she said ok to but was not very apologetic or nice about any of it. THEN we left and I realized I'd left my boyfriends ridiculously expensive Ray Bans on the table as we'd gotten to the car. He went back in the restaurant and asked the waitress if she'd seen them, she said no, he then looked and couldn't find them and asked her for help looking and she was so rude and refused. He then talked to the manager and she was a bit nicer and they found the glasses on the floor with one of the lenses smashed. Which this obviously isn't their fault, it just was the cherry on top of a miserable mess. It's funny b/c my friend has had good experiences here, but I had one that will ensure I never go back. Zero Stars Cons: sweaty staff, terrible service more

Great breakfast - casual and delicious 3/22/2008

Love, love, love the biscuits and gravy! Visit on the weekends and plan to wait. Use the time to read the paper, catch up with a friend, and look forward to the fantastic breakfast soon to be served. French toast, hash browns...mmmm. Pros: Food, Parking, People-Watching Cons: Busy on the weekends more

Best Omelette, fast service 2/23/2008

This was my first time here and the food was delicious. I had an omelette stuffed with bacon, peppers, salsa, cactus, spinach, and cheese. Putting cactus in an omelette is amazing. There was so much food, I had to take half of it home. Great food, eclectic atmosphere. Best breakfast. Pros: Large menu options more

Interesting, Cozy, Fun 11/1/2007

I just had to try them... it sounded so strange... Blue Corn Cakes. Pros: Good Food Cons: Not good for groups, space is very limited more

Best Breakfast hands down 2/11/2007

For anyone who enjoys biscuits and gravy, this is the place for you. This dish sets the standard for a wonderful hangover breakfast and if you are in the area this is the best you'll get. The portions here are huge and I have tried a number of dishes here and are all good. I have a hard time not spending my last 20 dollars (for 2) here. This is a great place for large appetites. Pros: Best breakfast ever Cons: waiting on weekends more

Must Try 11/23/2006

I love this place. Everything I have tried there has been excellent, especially the Santa Fe Railroad french toast! It does get busy and crowded at times...but for good reason! . Previous reviewers have complained about the wait. This is not the place to go if you're in a hurry on a weekend morning! However, it is an excellent place to relax while enjoying an inexpensive meal with friends. more

great breakfast 10/26/2006

the reviews about the french toast were not wrong. Great service, friendly staff (gave us lots of tourist suggestions per request). I had the chorizo & eggs Mexican-style breakfast....huge portions & properly spiced. The place definitley has a neighborhood, non-pretentious feel. more

Sante Fe French Toast 8/19/2006

I'm not normally a french toast fan, but the Sante Fe french toast is worth the trip alone. If you haven't had it, it's definitely worth a try. Pros: Outdoor seating in the summer Cons: Expect a wait if you've got a larger group more

Loved It! 8/5/2006

I was seated promptly by a cheerful host, and my server was at my table almost immediately with a glass of water. She was friendly and knowledgeable, and the service was excellent. I wanted to try just about everything on the menu and finally decided on the Cowboy Tort, which was delicious and very, very filling. I can't wait to go back. Pros: Outdoor seating, fantastic service, great selection more

Great Breakfast 7/31/2006

When my wife and I lived in Uptown, this was the spot. The French Toast is amazing, and I think the hashbrowns are really good as well. Mine have never been frozen, and if you walk through the back and peak into the kitchen, you can see a whole pile sitting on the grill getting perfect. Sometimes the service is annoying. We had a really good server but everytime someone said something, he would reply with, ""No worries."" He must have said, ""No Worries,"" about 50 times to our table. Can I get a cup of coffee? No Worries. Can I get a napkin? No worries. But like I said, he was really good and the food came out quick and the coffee was always being poured. Pros: Food Cons: Parking(sometimes) more

AWFUL 5/29/2006

I 'm really not sure how this place a rates a 9.2, the food here is just awful, hashbrowns frozen in the middle, come on guys change the setting on the microwave. The service is good, at least it looked good at the other tables, I guess we were invisible that day. Anyway may give it another shot, but man this time around really soured us for this place Cons: the food more

I Wouldn't Know 4/16/2005

Everyone seems to think this place is the best ever. I for one wish I had the chance to try the food. We arrived there 45 minutes before I needed to be to work. we had no problems finding a seat, the server got us our coffee right away (the coffee was good), and that was the last we saw of our server (exept when she took the order for the table next to us, who were seated 10 minutes after us). I gave up after 15 minutes because at this point we didn't have enough time. I may get the nerve to try it again but I would go to Egg and I (right down the street) before I try to stop here again. more

Sunnyside WAY UP! 12/31/2002

Two words... FRENCH TOAST! The best I ever had! This place is definatly not known for fine dining, but if what you want is a great breakfast, you must come here! Be prepared for a wait, especially on the weekends, but it's well worth it! Those people are in line for good reason! Pros: French toast, French toast, French toast Cons: Crowded, Long wait more

Sunnyside Up 11/6/2002

Sunnyside Up is the best best breakfast in Minneapolis Hands Down. They Have the best French Toast I've ever had. The waitstaff is quick and friendly even though there is a line outside the door from pretty much open to close on the weekends. The atmosphere and people watching are great, and my favorite part is going to Sunnyside Up later on in the afternoon because the later it is, the more hungover it gets. The review on this website is wirng though, they do have a smoking section. Pros: Inexpensive, Quick more

My fave 8/26/2002

I go to this breakfast joint every weekend. I have taken family, friends, little groups and big groups to this popular restaraunt. I have never once had poor service or bad food. Their menu has both standard breakfast favorites and fun twists. The worst part about going to this restaraunt is trying to decide what I should eat!! Pros: friendly, good value, tasty Cons: can be smokey, loud at times more
