Overpriced 2/18/2009

This place was waaaayyyy overpriced! Sullivan's has a beautiful dining area and I was very excited initially...once the poor service started, it all went downhill from there. My steak was burned to a crisp. I asked for medium and it was super well. Their "Kristy's" attempt at a salad failed. Don't charge me $8 for a baked potatoe that isn't even done! Parking was rediculous! Overall I did not have a good experience! more

It was...OK 1/8/2009

Our server was prompt and friendly and the decor lovely, however the seasoning on both my and my husband's steaks were quite salty. The filling to my steak, while good, wasn't great and there wasn't nearly as much as I'd expected. For dessert, my husband's key lime pie was fabulous but my cheesecake was merely OK and I had to ask for additional topping for it since what came with it was merely a drizzle around the edge of the plate. Overall, the meal was OK, but certainly not worth the $100+ we paid for it. Next time we'd go back to Fleming's for the price point. Pros: The key lime pie is delicious Cons: The rest the meal was OK, but for the price should be much better more

Overpriced for the food. Not impressed 8/20/2008

This was my second time eating here. The first time was not memorable. The decor and service was very good but the food was lacking for the price. The calamari was a little soggy (oil not hot enough). The oysters were good but its hard to mess up oysters on the half shell. One of our party ordered the lobster steak special for a mere $65 the lobster was overcooked. I got the fillet with fries and a side sauce, I promptly sent it back because it was cold and so were the fries. I thought they would have just heated it on the grill but I had to wait for a new one. When it arrived everyone at the table had finished eating they fillet had been cooked on such a high heat it was charred on the outside which is not good when you order rare! I also did not get my sauce, but I had given up. The bill with wine was over $400 I wont be going back. Lamberts is still my favourite place for a steak. Pros: Friendly staff Cons: Too expensive for the quality of the food more

big disappointment 8/11/2008

We did our research for a good steakhouse. This place tried and has great potential but failed during our visit. The service was ok - the waitress somewhat informative, but overall not so hot, had bad timing with the servers and got a few wrong orders. There were 5 of us and every one of our meals arrived only warm - NOTHING was served hot which really really was a bummer. We had to send a few things back and one of our steaks was totally overcooked. Also, all of the sides are served family style and we were advised on ordering way too much, which was a bummer because it was total waste of money and we left a ton of food untouched. The decor was nice and the atmosphere was good - but we all left with a chip on our shoulder than we spent just under $100 per person and not one person was excited about their meal once it showed up. Pros: nice decor, tasty menu Cons: all food was served cold. expensive. more

AVOID ON VALENTINES!!!! 2/14/2008

If you are into waiting three hours (NOT AN EXAGGERATION ON VALENTINES) for a cold steak that was burned on the outside then i recommend eating at this place. Pros: NONE Cons: the entire place and the staff more

Great Experience 1/20/2008

Not the best. 1/7/2008

I picked this place for my birthday dinner which turned out to be a huge mistake. I made the reservations for 9pm and we were seated at 945. Food came promptly, but two of the side dishes were forgotten altogether. A friend of mine ordered a 12 oz steak and recieved a 9 oz. Five minutes after he sent it back, what I believe to be the exact same steak was returned to him in a different position on his place (not to mention overcooked). The steak I ordered was good, but not exceptional for 40.00. I would have been much more satisfied going to the Belmont nearby which has totally decent steaks at nearly half the cost. Pros: Not much... Cons: Seating time, didn't get what we ordered. more

Sullivan's no uptight dining here!!!!!! 12/28/2007

Best restaurant in Austin -Hands Down!!! In town on business and looking for a "man's steakhouse", the Hilton recommended Sullivan's. What an experience!!!! We were greeted at the door by a swarm of beautiful women who informed us of the wait and directed us to the bar. It was a Thursday night or what is obviously a big ladies night ($ 5 martinis) for the bar at Sullivan's. We walked into a bar packed with people, live jazz trio, and gorgeous women. Our bartender Lisa was quick to greet us with a smile and handshake then continued to introduce my collegues to the rest of the bar staff making us feel right at home. A few martinis later we proceeded to the dining room. What a great meal!!! The atmosphere was perfect, not your typical stuffy steakhouse. Our server Crissy had our night taken care of before we even sat down. All her suggestions were perfect, from the seafood sampler, and all jumbo lump baked crabcakes to the porterhouse smothered in gorgonzola garlic butter, she accompanied our steaks with a tower of onion rings and a lip smakin' sweet potato casserole!!! If you need to entertain, this is the spot. An experience not to be forgotten!!!!!! Pros: Steak, Service, $5 martinis on Thursday and Sunday Cons: Be prepared for a small wait if you don't have a reservation more

Been a while but worth it! 10/6/2007

I have not been to Sullivan's in a couple of years. I have to admit, the last time I was there it was good, this time it was great. The atmosphere has not changed, still packed. We did have to wait for our reservation because they were busy but my wife and I hung out in the bar for a bit. The steak I had was awesome, my wife's sea bass beats any I have had in a while. Our server was so cool, did not rush us, did not try to over-sell me or my wife on anything. Great service! I love going to a nice restaurant and feeling great about how much I spent. Not feeling ripped off by an overly pushy waitperson trying to gouge you for a big tab and big tip. Thank you Sullivan's you made my night!! We'll be back! Pros: Service! Service! Service! Cons: Had to valet park - but they were nice more

Met all of our Expectations! 9/3/2007

I recently visited Sullivan's Steakhouse for the first time in quite a while and was very impressed! My husband and I used to frequent Sullivan's but have spent more time checking out new restaurants in Austin. Going back to Sullivan's was a breath of fresh air! From the moment we stepped through the door we were promptly welcomed by the friendly hostesses. We went into the bar for a martini before being sat and greeted with a smile from one of the pleasant bartenders who told us about the Thursday night features in the bar. Apparently every Thursday Sullivan's offers $5.00 Specialty martinis (Try the 'knockout' if you like pineapples) and also $5.00 bar food all night in the bar! Before being sat the bartender also offered me a vanilla flavored cigar complimentary as part of the Thursday feature! What a great start to the night! Once we were sat our server approached the table with a smile and professional attitude. He recommeded the Crabcake which we had enjoyed before but were even more impressed by the presentation this time around! Both of our steaks were cooked perfectly and filled with flavor! I recommend trying the 'oscar style' with your steak (this is where they put asparagus, crab meat and bearnaise sauce on your steak) I did as a recommendation from my server and was glad I did! During our meal two seperate managers approached our table to wish us a happy anniversary and thank us for coming to spend it at Sullivan's! We were very impressed that everyone seemed to know that we were celebrating! When we were finished, three servers came over to clear our table at one time which really impressed both of us! We felt like the most important people in the restaurant! Finally we had a chocolate souflee for dessert to celebrate our anniversary and our server brought out a sparkler in addition! From start to finish this experience was one of the most memorable occasions we have shared out for dinner. Thank you Sullivan's we will be back soon! Pros: service, great steaks, knockout martinis, private dining, Ringside Cons: parking anywhere downtown can be tough, city hall is close and $5 otherwise valet more

Bad Dining Experience 5/18/2007

My wife and I went to Sullivans for our annivesary. The service was very good but the dining experience was horrible. We ordered an appetizer (cajun crabcake) and when they served it to us it was cold. My main course was the Porterhouse steak well done with a side of crab fried rice. The crab fried rice was overcooked and sticky. I had to send my steak back twice because it was not well done. The 1st time, it was medium well and the final time it was weell but tje outside was charcoal burnt!! At this time, my dining experience and appetite was ruined! The best part of my meal was the wedge salad. I'm sure it was just one of those nights wherte everything lined up wrong but why did it have to happen to me? more

Much dissapointment for a first time diner... 4/18/2007

Last night was my first time dining at Sullivans. I've lived in Austin for about 3 1/2 years now and have been to just about all of the "up-scale" restaurants here. I'm a culinary graduate from Texas Culinary Academy and have worked in some really nice places here in Austin. I've heard lots of good things about Sullivans, but after my experience last night I'm not sure that I would return. I sat at the bar with a friend of mine and we ordered the "Cajun Crab Cake". Upon receiving the dish, I immediately started to pick apart the plate as I always tend to do since I'm a chef myself. I tasted the sauces first by themselves and they were horrible. The red sauce was a roasted red pepper coulis and was very, very bland. The yellow sauce was what I think was a yellow pepper and mango coulis, also very bland. The crab cake wasn't much to brag about either. It looked as though it was a crab cake that was slightly seared and then sprinkled with cajun seasoning. The flavor of the cake itself was ok, but nothing to write home about. I then ordered the 20oz. bone-in Kansas City Strip and it was truly a dissapointment. No flavor at all, and the meat was tough. Another thing that bothered me was how poorly presentation was done. Both plates had seasoning and what looked like dried parsley all over the rims of the plates. Not very pleasing to the eye. Service was just ok, but also nothing to compliment on. Overall, I was highly dissapointed in my first experience at Sullivans after all the hype I had heard. I'll more than likely give them one more shot, but it will take alot of impressing to get me to come back a third time. Pros: Ambience Cons: Food not worth the price more

WOW!!! 12/31/2006

My wife and I visited Sullivan's steakhouse to celebrate our anniversary. What can I say? The food was tasty, wine exceptional and fantastic service. I would highly recommend Sullivan's to a friend. Our server, Jonathon was very classy and helpful (worth requesting). We plan to go again soon. Pros: Service, Steak Cons: none more

Best Dining Experience in Years 11/16/2006

My husband and I went to Sullivan's after our impromtu wedding with high expectations. We had an amazing dining experience. The food was outstanding, the timing was perfect, the restaurant was beautiful, and our server, Joelle, was above reproach. The food was a bit expensive, but they have specials avaiable certain nights, and we went for the prime rib. It was amazing, and extremely well priced. Also, we just moved from Boston, and the seafood here (no offense) doesn't compare. We had a couple seafood appetizers, and there was not a reason to complain. At the end, our server communicated why we were there, and they comp'd our entire bill, minus the cigar for my husband. I work as a waitress, and being extremely critical of restaurants is almost second nature now. I dont have a single compalint. I highly recommend this restaurant. And if you go, ask for Joelle, she was amazing. Pros: Great Service, Dining promotions on certain nights (check website) Cons: Bar was very busy, overflowed into entrance way. Can be pricey. more

What happened??? 10/24/2006

My wife and I have come here for special occasions for years, it has always been a staple of where we love to dine, with that being said, it will not be a place we will return. From the moment we drove up to the valet attendant, we were treated rudely, they did not get the door for my wife, they did not even aknowledge that we were there, instead they continued to chat with one another and took about 5 minutes before we were even glanced at, they must be new because the old valet attendants always were so attentive and seemed as if they cared, this was the first change we noticed, then when we dined our server seemed to rush our meal along, appetizers came with our entrees, everything just seems to have changed so much. We used to love this place!!! Please someone explain what happened to our favorite steakhouse! Pros: nada Cons: everything more

Sullivans Has Slipped! 7/27/2006

I went to Sullivans last night to celebrate a relative's birthday. It had been about a year since I last dined at Sullivans. From the get-go, I knew something was amiss. The top-shelf cocktails ordered table-side were weak. At the server's recommendation, we decided to get the seafood sampler (~$40). Weak. For a party of four, we got 3 shrimp, 2 crab claws, 5 very small oysters and some paltry pulled crab. Sadly, the highlight of the meal was the iceberg wedge. Based on previous visits to Sullivans, I have always considered it one of the best steakhouses in Austin; however, after last night, that is no more. Perhaps they are under new management or in transition....whatever the case, they've lost their luster. more

Excellent Evening 7/19/2006

My colleagues and I had a very enjoyable dinner at Sullivans. Here is a summary of our experience and food: Food / Drink: Overall - wonderful. Would have no hesitation ordering any item again during a future visit. - Scotch / Wine: very good selection. Impressive wine list. - Appetizers: Crab cake (very good); Seared Ahi tuna (very good) - Sides: Creamed spinach (delicious); Green beans (very good); Asparagus (very good) - Steaks: Filet mignon (cooked perfectly; the best I've had anywhere in recent memory) - Deserts: None (too full) - Decor / ambiance: enjoyable. Not too noisy, but not a library either. - Service: Very attentive and pleasant. Didn't feel neglected. Timeliness of food delivery was appropriate and consistent. - Price: Perhaps a little pricey, but we felt the food quality and experience was worth the price. We agreed we would definitely eat here again. Excellent evening. No complaints. Pros: Food quality, service Cons: Parking (needed to use valet) more

Nice place but... 7/6/2006

Nice place but the food leaves a little to be desired. My steak tasted like liver, my onion rings and potatoes were way too salty, and my chocolae souflee was the worst I have ever had. The only good thing about this my meal was the martini! I do have to say that the service as pretty good. Pros: Nice place, good service Cons: Pricey, below average more

Going downhill 6/21/2006

This place used to be exciting but it's definitely gone downhill in the last couple of years. The atmosphere and the food seem off. There are a lot more great places to eat in Austin. Pros: Steaks are good Cons: Atmosphere not that great more

  • In Short
The interior speaks of old-school elegance, with dark-wood paneling, faux library and black-and-white photographs. The dining room faces an expansive open kitchen and the sealed-off, temperature-controlled wine room reveals a floor-to-ceiling selection of wines. A seasonal special, Maryland soft-shell crab, is battered in Japanese bread crumbs. The porterhouse steak is cooked perfectly, the meat tender and gently marbled, crusted with a flavorful blend of coarse pepper and salt.
