Standard Diner

Excellent food, good wine selection at a reasonable price, wait staff is well trained and has an excellent knowledge of the menu. The quality and presentation was well above most competitors. I was thrilled to see a waiter pour water without getting in the booth to accomplish his task. The atmosphere was friendly, casual (no slobs), the staff and host was friendly, knowledgeable and went out of his way to make you comfortable and seat you appropriately. No loud over head music you could carry on a conversation at a normal speech level no shouting amplifiers necessary A good experience as evidenced by several return visits with guests. more

I went to this restaurant because I saw it on Diner's Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network. I love the show but I do have to say that it was not as good as I would have thought it tasted. Maybe it just looks so good on TV and I had different expectations. Pros: Love the atmosphere Cons: Not what I expected more

Took 10 minutes for server to acknolwedge our presence, took 10 more minutes to get our beverages, took another 40 minutes to get our lunch, constant excuses from the server while he was trying to settle problems at the table next to us, our order was wrong, tried to tell hostess of our problems and she was too busy yakking with friends to care. I wrote an honest assessment of our experience on a survey card only to be placed on their email SPAM list. No concerned follow up or apology for the poor experience. Oh, to top it all off our server offered to comp the tea and coke to make us feel better about the lousy performance. What a joke!! The place wasn't even that busy - plenty of open tables. I was so eager to try this place, as I love diners and ""comfort food"" - alas I was sorely disapointed. Let me start off by saying kudos to the delicious food: tasty, creative and stove hot (because who enjoys their entre cold?). But unfortunately, that's about all this place has going for it. The key to a great resturant is an attentive and reliable waitstaff. The Standard Diner does not have that. Our waitress finally came to take our drink order about 10 minutes after we were seated - tack on another 10 minutes to actually get the drinks (not mixed, both were from bottles). She forgot the water we requested (she also was lax in refilling the glass). After 15-20 minutes after ordering our meal, they finally brought over some bread and oil. She forgot the side salad my fiance ordered and finally asked ""did no one every bring you your salad?"" A whopping 35-40 minutes after we ordered our dinner - we were served with it. Again - lax service - our waitress stopped to ask only how it was, as an afterthought - she was walking by and then stopped to come back to ask. The food and the Standard Diner is more interesting than most fare in ABQ. The service has been less than good on two of four visits. Long waits for drinks and food and forgotten dishes shouldn't really be happening when you have two or four people at off peak times of the day. On the upside, I actually think prices are comparable to Flying Star, for instance, with the quality of food far superior. more
