Editorial review from Citysearch 8/31/2013

Visited this establishment for the first time and was very disappointed, actually walked out prior to the meal coming out. I was not sure if it was because of our appearance or diversity, but the service was slow compared to other couple and people seated after us, you could play baseball with the rolls served to us, as well as very cold attitude. I've dined at many establishments in the City of NY and have had wonderful experience, but thought about enjoying something local and was totally flabbergasted by the service. I have not had such an experience in a very long time, I will definitely try other local restaurant, but will stay away from this one. more

Excellent food and ambience! 8/3/2011

My husband surprised me with a romantic dinner there for our anniversary. I always wanted to go but it is not a cheap place. We normally never go to fancy places for dinner (especially in this economy). But my hubby wanted to do something special for our anniversary! I was very pleasantly surprised when he valet parked across the street at the Heldrige hotel and told me where we were going for dinner. We both loved it and hope to go back again for another special occasion. more

Dinner was a Huge Hit! 7/3/2011

My office mates and I recently celebrated the completion of a project with dinner at Stage Left. Could not have gone better! Great food - wonderful, discreet staff. The wine list was awesome - lot's of unique gems. We ended the night with Cigars and Port in the outdoor cafe. Great way to celebrate! more

Elegant Dining in New Jersey 4/8/2011

While I have had the pleasure of dining out in my travels until recently I had not had the opportunity to dine at Stage Left. I must say I am very pleased that I finally made my way to this destination restaurant as guests of another couple. It is rare in these times that you find a restaurant with true class. From the moment we walked in the door you could tell this was a restaurant run by professionals. Our server, Megan was warm, professional and very knowledgeable about each menu item. While the gentlemen choose from the steak menu I enjoyed the 4 course tasting menu. I though this was a great value at $49. I particularly enjoyed the Seared Scallops with a Citrus Butter. The entire evening we felt like we were in good hands. I look forward to returning. more

Best Place for my Birthday 4/1/2011

My family has been going to Stage Left for years and we just love it. I celebrated my 21st Birthday there because I could finally order off of their amazing wine list. I started with a shashimi style fluke with hazelnuts and a chili vingaigrette which was tdf! For my entree I enjoyed the Buttermilk poached chicken - If only my Mom could make chicken like this! Had a great time!!! more

Great Business Dinner - Going Back 3/30/2011

I recently was in New Brunswick on business and arranged to have a business dinner for about 15 people in Stage Left. I was pleasantly surprised when the upgraded our private room to the Wine Library. My boss was thrilled! This is a beautiful room. My boss loved the wine list and enjoyed selecting wine with the owner, Mark. We enjoyed an Italian Red and an Austrian Gruner Veltline (not sure of the exact wines). The wine complimented our meals very nicely. Service was great. The menu gave our guests ample choices (I enjoyed the Goat Cheese Salad with Candied Pecans, followed by the Butter Poached Shrimp with Romesco Sauce) and everyone loved the food. The wait staff was exceptional - very professional, knowledgeable and discreet. My Boss loved it so much I don't think he gave the bill a thought. He told me to book this restaurant at our next quarterly meeting. Will Do! more

Great Place for Special Occassions and Business Dinners 3/25/2011

Recently visited Stage Left after not being there for awhile. Not disappointed. I've conducted business dinners there for groups in the past. The staft was always friendly and discreet. Food is fresh - they strive to use seasonal, local ingredients - and well prepared. This time I went to celebrate a friend's birthday and was blown away. Love the new steak menu - best steaik I've ever had. The wine list is great - lots of hidden gems and our server - Alex - was wonderfully knowledgeable about the wine list. Looking forward to going back on my next visit to New Brunswick. more

I've always loved this restaurant 3/23/2011

I've been dining here on business for years. I enjoy holding business dinners here and dine here socially as well. I enjoy the Chef's approach to food - using seasonal ingredients and local ingredients as often as possible. I find the staff to be very knowledgagable and accomodating. One of the few places in NJ where you can enjoy a cheese course (and I often do). Always look forward to dining here. more

Avoid this trap 3/22/2011

Avoid avoid avoid. Went with a friend to use a gift certificate. What a waste. First, the service. Indifferent, incompetent and amateurish. Food is pretentious and poorly prepared. For rare steak, for example, expect rubbery and salty. A 'special treat' is their eponymous 'pork roll'- if you don't feel like spending $16 on diner food, you could be forgiven. The preparations are extremely uninspired, and while the ingredients might sound elegant, the plates exiting this ktichen are oversalted, too sweet and generally not palate pleasing. Having sampled the 'tasting menu', I found the hype surrounding this place bewildering. Is it the prices that make people expect fine food? Is it the pretentious service? There are far better establishments on which to spend your time and money in New Brunswick. Don't waste either one here, you will be disappointed. more

Great place for a night out 3/14/2009

Affordable and delicious! Recently I went to the theatre and and stopped by Stage Left because it was so nearby. We ordered their petite menu which was only $35. It even had options, I ordered the trout while my husband ordered the pork belly. We will definitely be back. Pros: unique, delicious dishes more

Best upscale restaurant in central Jersey 1/6/2008

From the moment we walked into the restaurant, we were taken into hands of luxury and great service. They greeted us warmly at the door, took our coats, and sat us by the romantic fireplace. Our server was extremely gracious, and knowledgeable about their food and mammoth sized wine list. The food was scrumptious. Definitely a place for a special occasion, or date. Although, in the bar, they do serve ""Jersey's best hamburgers"" (as informed to us by several other diners and our bartender). This is definitely a place you want to leave the children at home with the babysitters! Pros: Food, wine list, and service. Cons: Bit pricey more

Wonderful experience 3/18/2006

Stage Left is one of those once in a lifetime eats. (Its expensive for a reason.) My friend and I were very very late for our reservation, however, the staff accomodated us beautifully. We received prompt seating and attention. The staff knew the menu and the restaurant well. Wine pairings were made with excellent judgement. The food was amazing and rich and delivered with a short schpiel about what we had and gorgeous presentation. At times the food definitely seemed to lean toward french and at others, quite american, but it was delicious anyway. I loved how comfortable I felt and how professional the waitstaff was. Definitely should try it. Pros: staff, gourmet Cons: pricey more

Way Over priced. 1/31/2006

When we first go there the host looked at us as if we did not belong. The waiting staff was very nice and prompt, except for the check at the end. The wine menu was way over priced. Most reputable restaurants charge twice the retail price for bottles. Here, it seemed to be closer to three times the retail price or more in some cases. Even though the presentation was nice, the food was sub-par at best. Taste should come first then presentation, not the other way around. The cheeses on the cart looked like they have been sitting around for half a week and were cut haphazardly. Good cheese presentations are maintained much better. Last, the bread pudding desert was actually a glorified muffin sitting in liquid, cut in half with ice cream in the middle. Either, it was a muffin or it was extremely overcooked bread pudding. Pros: Nice waiting staff, Decent dinner plating Cons: Judgmental host, Over priced wine list, Lackluster food more
