St. Louis Art Museum Review 2/28/2003

How this place has escaped the notice of National Geographic or Smithsonian magazines is beyond me. The permanent collection is extensive and exceptional. The temporary and traveling exhibits are appropriate for a family museum and of excellent quality and reputation. The grounds are beautiful (Forest Park--site of the 1904 World's Fair) and parking is free and generally close to the museum. The museum staff is a little on the "brisk" side, being very quick to reprimand visitors for getting too close to some exhibits or using flash cameras, but perhaps this is necessary to protect a world class art collection from the over-appreciative public which sometimes comes through the museum. Never again. 10/14/2002

After having visited museums around the world, I was shocked at the rudeness of the guards at SALM when I moved here. After several occaisions, I have given up on the "bad day" theory and cancelled my mebership. Their collection isn't good enough to justify the hassle. Add the pathetic choice of eats and inconvenient handicapped / stroller entrance, and the trip to the museum ceases to be enjoyable whatsoever. Pros: great original bldg, historic location Cons: poor parking, shallow collection, poor food choices more

Fun & Educational (don't tell the kids) 8/18/2002

It's a great place to take kids. There are so many things to look at. They also have several special exhibits throughout the year for a nominal fee, but it's usually worth it. more

rated 8th in the country, this museum is free! amazing works of art, gorgeous hundred year old building, wonderful staff, exciting traveling shows, i'm astounded every time i visit. more

A small but good collection 7/23/2002

It's a small collection compared to the museum in Chicago where I tend to get overwhelmed with seeing everything I can, instead of enjoying what's actually there. The smallness and quality of artwork in this museum makes it one of the best of I have visited. Pros: permanent collection, easy to see in 1 hour, free more

Hey u, yea u on the horse! 7/19/2002

the St. Louis Art Museum takes the cake for me as far as museums go in the St. Louis Area. The view when you look up to the hill where the Statue on top of the horse is located is something to see with the Museum as a background. When you go in you can't help but notice elegant floors, impressive wall designs and of course the sculptures. As you branch off there are 2 levels if I'm not mistaken it's been a couple of years since I've been able to go. Yet the main thing that draws me is the Egypt exibit;) Also below are rooms for discussions and lectures given by top professors around the country. They also have a store where you can buy items ranging from jewelry to postcards. The paintings are beautiful and the sculptures are amazing. Pros: BEAUTIFUL, peaceful Cons: better parking ;) more

    The Collection
    Among the 30,000 works in the collection are paintings, sculpture, prints, photographs, glassware, furniture and textiles. There are also several period rooms, pre-Columbian figures, suits of armor, Renaissance masterpieces and impressionist paintings. The museum boasts particularly strong holdings of German expressionism, including pieces by Max Beckmann. Another important section is Modern Art: Works by contemporary artists like Chuck Close, Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter coexist with modern paintings by the likes of Gauguin, Degas, Matisse, Kandinsky and Cezanne.
