This is the absolute worse venue I have ever been to. My sisters are here from Alabama and excited to be going to their first concert seeing their favorite performers. They were so excited they were the very first people in line. As people started coming, the line became chaotic. Instead of the staff provided the proper crowd control, they continued to let people get in front of people that had been there for 6 hours. By this being a childrens concert, they should have roped off the entire area to provide the necessary lines. I along with several other parents said they will never bring their children here again. I heard the lady that brought the dog to the Shelter first lied and told the staff that the dog was part of the show. The group's manager performing that night was overheard saying that "lady" was a crazed fan who had been following the band and showing up to shows and offering them illegal medications (wink wink nudge nudge). They had brought the dog up on stage the night before because they thought it was funny. Is it wrong to bring a dog into a music venue with extremely loud music, intoxicated people, and possible broken glass on the floor? Talk about animal cruelty! Does everyone feel comfortable around large dogs they do not know? Obviously not by the police reactions to her dog. Was St. Andrew's denying someone their right to basic human needs? No, this was an entertainment event not a soup kitchen. Was she within her right to come in? Sure, but why subject a dog to that type of environment? BTW said "lady" was heard yelling she wanted the contact info for her lawyer who she stated was Allen Ginsberg (who died in 1997). more

I encountered a nightmare at this venue! I was attending an event with my properly identified,10 yr old well trained service dog(who goes EVERYWHERE with me,flys with me etc.) and was illegially denied entry.The staff and management,Mike,Violet,and 2 others who refused to give their names or honor my request of calling an offical to verify,my legal right to entry, told me to go find my own cop on any corner.The doorman actually physically manuvered me out of the building.I was embarressed,humilliated and discriminated against! The two DP who responded were afraid of my dog(lying asleep at my feet) and actually at one time terrified me to tears when she sat up and they reached for weapons.,Mike,Violet,and the 2 officers,decided only seeing eye dogs were service dogs an offered to lock her in his office for the show because it was cruel to expose her to the show,Or just "lock her in my car"EXCUSE ME! This "general manager" is now authorized to decide whats proper for my service animal? Lieutenant Latham was called in an advised Mike he was in non complience of the service dog law.All staff hid their face when i took pictures and all officers demanded I stop audio recording what transpired.Mike,refused me a contact number for my attorney to advise him of his error.All officers involved refused my request for a police report. I advised all of them that the audio and video of what occured will be given to the media.Mike became very hostile and told me "You will NEVER get in this building ever!" I've seen a bunch of bands here and I love it everytime! It's falliing apart though. I don't know if they've replaced the floors yet, but when we went to see a band there, the openin band played then they shut down the show. Jbuss's review of this venue is amazingly inaccurate. I've been to St Andrew's Hall back at the time that review was written, along with just the other night, and both times, I've had a blast. The staff was incredible (at the Aquabats show, the security was joining in with all our goofy actions, up to and including doing the Circle of Love, and at one point even encouraging the audience to give the 'A' handsign). Some friends and I even chatted with them a bit after the shows; fantastic guys, all of them. I've seen the 'Bats at the Majestic, and the story was completely different; the security team was all total jerks (one actually took a playlist away from a fan that was personally given to them by a member of the band). I'm unspeakably pleased that the band decided to go back to St. Andrew's, and I hope that they continue to return there every time they visit Detroit. Pros: Lots of nearby parking Cons: n/a more

this place was disrespectful to the bands I didnt pay that much money to see one band Then have to contend with a band powering up in the basement that sucked even battle of the bands take turns not different music at the same time.The Seating sucked, and at least at DTE I was able to bring a seat knowing there are NO SEATS on the hill. You can stand in front of the stage or against the wall however there were a couple of bar stools. They could of set out a couple of benchs. that might ofcost to much! My comments are about "The Shelter" which is in te basement of this 3 story building. The mood is WONDERFUL. Black walls with red and blue lights everywhere. You are instantly comfortable entering there. The venue holds about 200 people MAX and there is NO WHERE to sit other than the bar area which seats about 12 people. The drink prices are OUTRAGEOUS. 4 dollars for a domestic beer, and the prices go up from there..WAY UP. Food... not here. With some white lights this place would lose 100% of it's appeal, as it's really only an old basement with brick walls and pipes running everywhere. There is one metal support thats smack dab in the way of the stage and that kind of sucks too. I loved the look. I loved the music, but everything else left a lot to be desired. I been to Andrews during winter time, on Fridays and it use to be off da hook. But now it's too hot, too many hoodrats, not enough ballers'. Everybody use to dress real nice and come out and have fun, but now everybody is dressin' any kind of way and it really ain't sh*t now. But wait until winter time, it's gon be fun again if that stupid Electric Kingdom junk doesn't take over. Always a stop for bands on their way to stardom and a great way to see them in a more intimate and reasonably priced venue. The diversity of acts that play the club is directly reflected in the the diversity of the audience ... always a plus. more

The city's what you make it -- and St Andrew's has bravely stood out, through fat years of yuppies crowding over from Space and the Casinos, to the lean years of punk rock and the beginnings of Techno. It supported me as a ridiculous clubkid and self-important promoter, without which support I would have crumbled up downriver. Of course I got out as quick as I could. Lovin' it!
