Okay cupcake, overrated 3/20/2010

A friend of ours ordered these cupcakes for her husband, rather than a birthday cake. I bake at home for my kids, so never found the need to purchase cupcakes. Plus, I don't have a sweet tooth. Finally though, I tried these cupcakes that everyone has talked about so much. To be honest, was not impressed at all. They tasted good, but maybe the hype of 'oh these cupcakes are the best' gave me high expectations. They tasted like other cupcakes I have had, nothing special, just a cupcake. If you want to splurge you money on a cupcake then that's the place to do it. I'll continue to bake at home, it's more fun and doesn't cost a lot. Pros: Taste good Cons: Expensive, ordinary more

Traveled 1 hour for a cupcake? 1/1/2010

So we are pathetic. We drove one hour from SD to Newport Beach just for a cupcake. Yes, that is the only reason. Yes, we stopped by some of the beaches along the way -- but honestly we only made the journey to come to Sprinkles. And, had they not opened this one in Newport Beach -- we would have driven to Beverly Hills. Pathetic, I know. But, we live in Cleveland and we don't have Sprinkles in Cleveland. So when we come to So. California, we go to Sprinkles.\r \r This time however, it just wasn't the same. Maybe the differences in location? Maybe we were expecting too much? Sometimes the excitment is too much hype.... but the frosting was way too sweet, and lathered on way too much -- and the cupcake seemed a lot smaller (the cake part) than the ones we used to get in Bev Hills. Maybe my imagination. Maybe not.\r \r Guess we will stick to the 2-hour drive next time... better to drive 2 hours and not be disappointed. Better yet -- hey Sprinkles -- open one in Cleveland. (On second thought... that's probably not such a good idea.) Pros: Sprinkles... Cons: Frosting was too sweet... more

Great fancy cupcakes 5/1/2009

I used to be anti-Sprinkles. I thought it was pretentious, frou-frou, etc. That is, until my co-worker convinced me to try them. My co-workers and I all agree that what makes Sprinkles cupcakes really stand out is the frosting. The cake part isn't special and is sometimes too crumbly. However, if you love chocolate frosting, this place is very good! And I'm very picky about chocolate! Other cupcake bakeries have terrible waxy-textured frosting or are too sugary/lacking in flavor. I recommend the dark chocolate or B&W cupcake for something not too sweet. Their pumpkin and red velvet cupcake is also very good. Seriously better than commercial frosting and whatever is sold in a grocery's bakery-trust me. I'm still cheap and baked/tried them all, but Sprinkles is an indulgence that's worth it. Cons: Long lines more

Best cupcake bakery 11/16/2008

Sprinkles has the best cupcakes I've ever tasted. My personal favorites are red velvet, black & white, strawberry, and chai latte. The chocolate marshmallow, on the other hand, is almost inedible because it so rich and bitter. The service is quick and efficient, though the lines can be long. Just avoid it during peak hours. And the $3.25 price tag is definitely worth it. more

Overrated by followers! 7/28/2008

I'm sorry, but they're not the original cupcake bakery! Go to New York and you will find many of cupcake bakeries that have been around much longer than these wannabees. Talk about overrated. Hellooo, I can buy me a box of pre-made batter from the store and make a better cupcake. The fans of this place are people that follow fads because they saw a star eating one. What a waste of my time. Pros: It's in Newport Beach Cons: Everything else. more

Be strong! Don't give in! 4/8/2008

Very dissappointing. Not a favorite dessert at all. First, to buy the cupcake you have to stand in a HUDGE line and wait for up to 10 min. Then once you get inside the ultra-crowded, tiny, room you have about 5 seconds to pick out which dry, flavorless cupcake you would like. I chose strawberry, red velvet, and milk chocolate. Big mistake. For 3 cupcakes it was 12$!The strawberry, more like a thick bread then a moist cupcake, was sad. After a bite I wanted to hurl the piece of dry calories across the Newport Beach, soccer-mom parking lot. I will never eat that again. Never again. Next the chocolate, the frosting, more like fudge was ok but waaaaay too rich. It was very bitter and dry and I couldn't take a bite without half of falling into my bra. Not as bad as the strawberry bread, but still not worth 4$. The red velvet was good. It was like a watered-down chocolate that was colored red. Thats all. The cream-cheese frosting was good, not exceptional. If I was forced to eat another Sprinkles cupcake(which in my opinion is worse then getting my toes-nails ripped off) I would choose red velvet. Over all very dissappionting. Not worth all the hype. Save yourselfs and go to Albertsons and get one of theirs, I can promise it will be better. Pros: Leaving Cons: Uh, everything more

Fattening yet fabulous. 1/30/2008

Oh boy. Just thinking about this place makes me feel as if my waistline is expanding, but it's hard to remember that once I'm eating one of their cupcakes. Being a major dessert person gives me a major appreciation for this adorable little place. Their cupcakes are fresh, colorful and taste amaaazing. What's best is that they have certain flavors sold on certain days. It is a very fun place, but should not be frequented often, unless you want to be overweight, haha. The red velvet (quite cliche) and peanut butter chocolate ones are my favorite. In love. more

Try Strawberry!!! 10/4/2007

If you can get here it's worth it... whenever i have relative come and visit... i always take them here.... the cupcakes are GREAT!!!!! i strongly suggest the red velvet and the strawberry..... this place is one of those place you have to try if you live in orange county... Pros: Best Strawberry cupcake i ever tasted Cons: The line... more

Overrated. Better off buying a box and baking it at home. 2/26/2007

Overrated. They're $4 cupcakes, and water/milk at $2/each! My friends and I sampled the red velvet, the black & white (chocolate cake, white frosting), vanilla, choco coconut, strawberry and vanilla milk chocolate. The white cake was incredibly dry. The white frosting was overly sweet on some, and bland on another. Red velvet, Choco coconut and black & white were the only ones that tasted yum, but not $4 yum. Ridiculously overpriced if you ask me. Customer service was less than desirable. She kept asking us, over and over, ""I'm sorry, what cupcakes did you want again?"" By the time we got the box, we looked in, and sure enough - it was the wrong cupcakes.\r \r Perfect for the aging wanna-be hipster plastic mom with her gaggle of kids in her H3 who wants to be ""cool"" with her kids. So, I guess perfect for Newport Beach. :) Pros: Adorable, but tiny shop. Cons: Everything else. more

So good, can't wait to eat it, but want to savor it! 10/23/2006

As far as cupcakes (icings) go, this place has some of the tastiest. The cupcakes aren't extraordinary, but the icing is and that's what makes these cupcakes a treat...yummy!! The cupcake itself is soft and along with the tasty icing, it just seems to melt in your mouth. I like the black and white the best. The strawberry wasn't as good as I expected. Though there are many flavors, the others weren't really to my taste. \r \r Oh, they are costly as far as cupcakes go. Pros: yummy cupcakes, splendid presentation Cons: cost more
