Horrible restaurant, great view of the beach 9/20/2008

My husband was embarrassed to have chosen this ""treat"" for our anniversary. We couldn't decide what was worse, the cold, poorly prepared food or the cold, poorly coordinated service. Or the outrageous prices. This place is downright obnoxious. Pros: Nice view of the beach, marble bathrooms (if you care) Cons: Icy wait staff, terrible service, amateur cuisine, food served cold, EXPENSIVE more

disappointing overrated food 6/27/2007

It was our Anniversary and we decided to do a beautiful dinner at the Spiced Pear. We had been looking forward to it for a while. We go out fine dining quite a bit and we didn't think that this place would disappoint. The atmosphere is great- we went on a Friday night for the fantastic jazz in the veranda room. We had drinks and apps there first before retiring to the dining room for dinner a while later. In the veranda room we had spotty service, and a beet salad and a few oysters, which we didn't think would be the best our meal was to get. After listening to jazz for a few hours we headed to the dining room and ordered a nice bottle of wine. I had a foie gras appetizer which was breaded and deep fried with what tasted like maple syrup on it and a super sweet cherry foam which had no semblense to the dish, it was terrible. My husband's escargot was fairly decent but too salty for my taste. For dinner I had a Sunfish which would have been great- but it was beyond salty and my husband who actually loves salt couldn't even eat it. The biggest disappointment to the meal was my husband's $75 Kobe Beef Ribeye. Ribeye steak is usually marbelized with fat which gives the flavor, but not completey covered with fat. There was barely any meat. I cannot believe that a chef at a place like this would feel good about serving a piece of meat like this. You could get a better steak at a chain restaurant. Also the balsamic reduction was not reduced enough, making it runny and entirely too acidic. Our wine was the best part of the meal. I would go back to this place for the veranda food only (pizzas and burgers), but I wouldn't expect much but a great view. Pros: beautiful view Cons: food does not match with the high end place. more

Outstanding! 12/12/2006

The food and service were outstanding! Gorgeous setting, views. Very upscale. Can't wait to go back. We went during the week for dinner and loved it. The terrace is a great spot for drinks on a warm summer night. Pros: service, ambience, very luxurious Cons: expensive more

Good, but underwhelming 4/10/2006

The food is top-notch here, and in the summer when the outside section located directly atop Cliff Walk and First Beach is open, the setting can be spectacular (if there's no seaweed!). The drawbacks are the inflated prices and second class service. This is the most expensive restaurant in Newport, but not the best dining experience overall. I appreciate it when waitstaff are unobtrusive, but the service here, which you'd expect would be impeccable, is simply put - unavailable. Despite the fact there was hardly anyone else there, we were never asked if we needed anything further, and literally had to get out of our seats to find the staff ourselves when it came time to leave. They certainly were not unpleasant, but impossible to reach when their service was required. Pros: great food, interesting menu, nice environment Cons: price, lack of service more

until they correct some points, not worth it 10/16/2005

Changed my review Now I would have to say the restaurant is not worth itit is over pricedI was charged $11 for a beer (Manhattan doesnt even do that). The food on the porch was terrible. The pizza was tastelessagain $36 for 3 oysters and 2 shrimp. The service is average. Some members of the staff are good, others are bad. For the prices that are charged, one would expect a much better experience. Pros: food, view Cons: expensive, service more

Big Miss 7/31/2005

My wife and I celebrated our tenth anniversary here and were amazaed by the poor service. We can't blame the chef - the food was very good (super expensive for RI). However, for most of the night there was neither food nor drink on the table - imagine being parched with such a large wine cellar just below our feet! Adding insult to injury our letter and email to the management have been ignored. This place could have everything going for it - but such a Big Miss for such an expensive dinner is inexcusable. more

What a dissapointment 5/29/2005

This was easily the worst most overpriced brunch I have ever eaten. I ordered the Kobe hamburger ($ 25) the burger was good, but not worth the money. I could have closed my eyes and could not tell it was not one from my home grill. The burger came with Lays potate chips. My wife ordered the ceasar salad, it consisted of 3 leaves of lettuce with 1/2 chicken breast ($ 24) the dressing was bland at best. You cant pay me to go back. Very dissapointed. Pros: Beautifull Cons: Pricey, Bland, Overpriced more

Perfection 10/16/2004

Spiced Pear was perfect complement to a perfect night that I had few months ago. I became a kind of a regular since then. It was a complete exprecience from course after course of complex and simple food and carefully choosen wine list to very effective and discreet service that made me feel like that I was alone in the dining room. Whithout a doubt Spiced Pear is perfection of Food & Service or something close to it. Pros: Food, Wine, Service more

Worth The Visit 7/29/2004

I ate at the Spiced Pear. I find the $69 pre fix spectacular. Even with all the supps it is a value. Our meal with a bottle of wine was $250 for 5 courses each. For the quality and service, which are the best Ive ever seen, its a value. Presentation of this chef rivals New York and while service is not the best in the world it is right up there. I strongly reccomend this to anyone looking for the best food in the world and an amazing setting for a great value Pros: Food, Quality, Price Cons: , Its in Newport more

A Rip Off 7/22/2004

The food was very good from the presentation to the tase. The Prix Fix menus were interesting. The supplemental charges to the menu took something that I would do again and made it a total rip off. Dinner for two was over $400 wich is way too much for what we got. We're not going back. Pros: Good Food, Good Service, Valet Parking Cons: , Too Expensive, Too Expensive more
