Horrible experience, bad service, misleading menu 12/12/2006

I enjoyed going to Sol Fire for their Breakfast Burrito several times until the last time I went. The service has always been spotty, often with one waiter covering the whole dining room for brunch, although mostly tolerable it just meant a longer wait for drinks, or service. \r \r This last time I went to get brunch was the worst brunch experience I have ever had anywhere. Again, one waiter taking care of the whole dining room. We waited nearly a half-hour for a cup of coffee. We were asked what we wanted to eat nearly 45 minutes after sitting down while the waiter ran between tables. We ordered the usual Breakfast Burrito - as Ovo-Lacto vegetarians the menu lists beans, eggs, cheese and tomato. We received our food (with no refills to water or coffee) and had to get up and collect our own salt and pepper from the waiters station. After eating more then half of our meals, we realized that there was chunks of pork in the burrito, which had never happened before and was not listed on the menu. \r \r Upon bringing up our concern with the waiter, he told us he would not do anything about it. He claimed, we should have asked what was in the burrito because the pork was a seasoning which the chefs change when they want. We were so livid about having eaten pork after being vegetarians for over 6 years, we demanded a refund. Our demand was met with arguments that the menu item was not marked as vegetarian (well of course not - there is eggs and cheese in it!). The waiter had a very sour attitude and refused to do anything for us. I even offered to pay for half of the meal. We had to threaten never to return and walk out before the other employee overheard and offered to take care of removing the items from the bill. We were never asked if we would like something else, wanted more coffee or water or anything. We also never received the drinks we ordered. We got an apology later from the waiter for ""causing a conflict"" but this isn't enough to get me to return again. more

Terrible Service! 11/13/2006

We arrived at the restaurant on a Friday night to find an empty bar and dining area. The atmosphere was just dead. We soon found out why. Our extremely young and inexperienced server took ages to get our drink order, and when we were ready to order our food, he kept disappearing mid-order! He didn't know much about the menu and constantly had to consult someone in the kitchen regarding any questions we had. One of our party was allergic to cilantro, and when a dish was ordered without it, it took 10 minutes for them to figure out if this was possible. When the meal was delivered, the salad on the side was served with cilantro dressing (that we were previously told didn't contain any cilantro.) The other meals were just ok, we had eight people and no one was all that impressed. \r \r When the bill finally came, a few of us pulled out our credit cards, only to be told rudely that they couldn't accept more than two credit cards. Now, many of us have worked in restaurants before and we know that multiple credit card payments are possible, so we persisted, as none of us had cash anyway. Finally the waiter conceeded and finally ""somehow"" ran all of our cards. Just before leaving, the waiter confronted us abruptly and commented that he had heard us complaining about the credit card policy, and tried to blame it on the management. It was very awkward, and we left soon after. I would not go here again.\r \r If you don't like cilantro, DO NOT eat here, as basically every meal is cooked with it. Cons: Service, Food, Ambiance more

Great Sunday Brunch! 10/26/2006

Their brunch menu is very interesting and very different to the other offerings in Milaukee. It is a fun, hip yet casual restaurant where a good time is guaranteed. Pros: Brunch, Date Spot, Food Cons: Limited Parking more

Seafood+.............Steak- 10/23/2006

This was my first time eating at Sol Fire. It was Tuesday night around 7pm and the restaurant was empty with the exception of one other couple. The hostess hurried us to our seats and sat us down with a harsh 'here you are' of our menu's. After a quick glance over the South & Latin American flavors we decided on two entrees. I went with the Argentinian Hanger Steak, and my partner chose the Chili Gulf Shrimp. Upon ordering my steak I was surprised when the waitress did not ask for my choice of how done I wanted the meat, however with the look of the menu I assumed the chefs knew what they were doing. After a short wait our food came out and was very pleasently presented! The first few tip bites of the hanger steak were delicious...however after 3 or 4 bites my plate turned to a red, bloody sauce. The meat was sooo undercooked, and upon asking the waitress she told me the meat was so tender that it had to be cooked to the medium rare grade....this wasn't my first time eating the dish, yet alone hanger steak so I knew this to be false.....it was disappointing to let the rest of the steak go. As for the Gulf Shrimp they were prepared exceptionally well, with just the right amount of lime and chili kick to leave a tingling in your mouth! The rice and even the crispy tortilla strips toping off the shrimp were excellent!!! Personally I would not return here on having eaten the steak alone...if you like your meat cooked to anything past medium I would recommend notifying your waiter. Overall the atmosphere is dim, with Latin flair, and makes for a casual and romantic evening. Pros: Seafood, Atmosphere Cons: Steak, Service. more

Disappointment 1/31/2005

We went on a Friday night an hour and a half before a movie we were to see... The service was awful - our waiter checked on us only a couple times and the food was very late in arriving. When I expressed my disdain at waiting so long, the waiter was rude and not understanding. He sent over the owner of the establishment, who was rude even further and did not want to take any money off the bill. Finally, after further argument one drink was taken off the bill and we never made it to our movie. I was disappointed because I heard so many good things about the place. Now I am totally turned off and won't ever return, nor do I recommend it to anyone I know. more
