On the decline 8/23/2008

This used to be my favorite bar in Waltham. Two things have happened recently to make me change my mind. First, the bar tenders tend to ignore you when you want a drink because they are talking to their friends or each other. When sitting at a table, the waitresses are great, though slow. Last time it 15 minutes to get our first round of drinks when the bar was just beginning to fill up. That said, if you are at the bar, the bartenders could care less. Last time I was standing at the bar, it was me and three other people, with two bartenders. It took five minutes to get the bartender to stop talking to his buddy and another 5 for him to pour two pints. When I wanted a second round about twenty minutes later, it took three times as long. The other thing making me leave the place is the music. They bring in some Irish musicians to play live, which is awsome, but they are so loud you can't hear the person next to you. I appreciate the music, but I am not going for the concert. I am going to spend some time with friends. They need to turn down the speakers just enough so that I can hear the person next to me if we shout. \r \r That said, if you are looking for a loud, packed house on a Saturday night, it is the place to be. There are always a lot of people, the beer selection is large, but is all national brews like bud and Sam Adams, and the food it good enough to not make you go somewhere else. Pros: Loud. Crowded. Cons: Loud. Crowded. Slow Service. more

Horrible Experience 6/8/2008

Had an incredibly bad experience at The Skellig last night. I walk in with a friend on a Saturday night, we pay the $5 per person cover, approach the bar and order a drink from a waitress who looks about 40 years old with shoulder length blonde hair. A Redbull & Grey Goose plus a double vodka & tonic come to $26. I tip her $4 and remain at the bar. 20 minutes later we are ready for another drink. I look toward the same waitress, who is about five feet away, now fawning over some skinny kid who is playing with his cell phone while chatting with her. Clearly I am standing there waiting for service. In my sober state, I'm a little irritated, but continue to wait patiently, gesturing politely a couple times to see if I can possibly get her attention. While it is obvious she knows I am there waiting, she refuses to even acknowledge me.\r \r After about 10 minutes, another bartender saunters over and looks at me for my order. I \r say, ""Thanks for coming by. Your girl there is busy getting digits or something, but in any case, yes we'd like two more please."" He replies, ""That is her boss she's talking to."" I say, ""I don't care."" He steps away, interrupts the waitress and speaks with her for a minute. She then turns to me and starts yelling, ""I made you a drink, why are you being an %$$hole?!"". She repeats this, to which I reply, ""Watch your language. I gave you a $4 tip already. I would just like to order another drink."" The waitress repeats, her rage \r increasing, ""Why are you being an %$$hole?!"" Unwilling to engage in a shouting match, I calmly respond, ""OK, have a good night"" and turn to the other bartender, expecting him to take my order. He instructs me to ""walk away."" OK, no problem. So we walk into the back room and step up to the bar to order a drink. The bartender immediately says, ""You are cut off, we were just told not to serve you.""\r \r Be warned. If you expect decent service, your business may be turned away by the townie waitstaff. Pros: Ummm... hard to think of anything really Cons: Townie, foul-mouthed waitstaff more

Nice Irish restaurant 8/16/2003

I went here on August 1st on a VERY rainy Friday evening. I was going to go to Burger King, but decided on Skellig instead. They're part of the I-DINE program so I decided ""why not?"" Waitresses were cute and had cute Irish accents. Very helpful in giving me a menu with 1 Burger on it of which I ordered 2 for take-out. While waiting, I decided to check the back room which looked cool and WAAF was setting up for a contest. 2 burgers were just over $20 (extras were 50 cents each). At home my brother and I agreed the burgers weren't the best. Patty was somewhat smaller than most restaurant burgers and kind of bland. Fries were good though. Next time I go to Skellig's I'll try something other than a burger. And will definetely spend time in the back room where a cool band might play. Pros: cute waitresses, back room looks cool, bands Cons: burgers not the best more

A great addition to Waltham 5/14/2003

The Skellig is the best thing to happen to Waltham in the four years I've been living there. Finally a fun, busy place to go out in Waltham, instead of feeling like you always have to go into the city. The crowd is a eclectic mix of college students, young professionals, and townies, and the atmosphere and music are great. I'm becoming a regular... Pros: Inexpensive, Fun atmosphere Cons: Smoky more
