I'd like to applaud the Einstein at MacAuthority who thinks it is a good idea to limit the Educator's Discount only to Belmont and Vanderbilt. I'll set aside the implications of unwitting racist by not offering the discount to predominately African-American schools like TSU or Fisk, but instead I'll simply comment on the obvious effect of this policy that sends business to other retailers.
I bought a MacBook Pro there a year ago and received the Educator's Discount. Today I walked in to purchase another one thinking repeat business was important to a retailer. Despite the fact that nothing has changed in my eligibility, today I was sent packing because I am not affiliated with either Vandy or Belmont. Forget about all the other colleges in the area or the high schools or the elementary schools. If you are a student or faculty member of these schools, you are just plain out of luck. They either think you'll buckle and pay the extra money or they don't care if you scoot out the door and eagerly go to their competitor which is what I did. I drove straight to the Apple store in Green Hills and bought the top of the line MacBook Pro ($2350 with Educator's Discount) and I bought an iPad to boot.
So, once again, to the deep thinker who established this incredibly creative and insightful policy, I think you should write it up and submit it to Brand Week with your explanation of how it is driving sales increases unprecedented for your store.
