OUT of Business 8/9/2011

I was planning on having dinner with the familly at Shogun and there is a note on the front door from the City of Elk Grove listing ""Abandonement of Property"". Everything is gone inside - tables, tv, counter - Gone. Too bad...I have been to Shogun at least 40 times and really enjoyed it. more

This place misses the mark of being a Japanese restaurant 6/1/2011

I can't believe this place is still in business. I was very disappointed with the food and service. Before we could even sit down, the waitress was standing over us wanting to take our order. I had beef sukiyaki which was the worse I ever had, hardly any noodles and my sons had the salmon and beef teriyaki plates. The California Rolls were not on the plates and after asking the waitress she said oh they're coming. I was very surprised about the presentation of the food especially for a Japanese restaurant. I would not be going back and would never recommend it. You would think with Mikuni's next door they would be competitive. Wrong!!!! more

Outstanding food 4/17/2010

I have been eating at Shogun since it opened. I ate at Rainbow where Lee was the sushi chef before he opened Shogun. Lee and wife Mindy are very accommodating. Shogun is a small ""mom & pop"" owner run restaurant. This is the only sushi that my wife will eat. I enjoy everything on the menu, but my favorite is the Todd roll and scallop nagiri. Pros: best fish in Sacramento Cons: don't be in a hurry. more

A true mom and pop 1/22/2009

My husband and I have been going to Shogun for years for several reasons. First, the rolls are truly unique. The chef creates rolls with cooked and raw fish to meet any taste: fishy, creamy, fruity, spicy, warm, cold. Some of my favorites are garnished with a wedge of a jalepeno, a wedge of lemon, and cream cheese. While it does not say it on the menu, you can also request certain things on a roll (I have my own favorite named after me). They also have an ""All you can eat"" option. I say this in quotations because it is not like a buffet. There is not a table with stale sushi from which you choose food. You simply order as much as you want and pay a flat fee. Be careful though, sushi can be quite filling and you don't want to waste. Ask for a split roll with half one order and half the other.\r \r Not only is the food great, but the atmosphere is welcoming. On busy nights all of the customers share shots of sake and sometimes even sing karaoke. While you may feel like an outsider to their following of customers, you are truly welcome. \r \r Finally, we love Shogun because it is a family-owned business. The owners are always cooking and serving food. They may be short staffed, but they work really hard to ensure that you are happy. Lee and Mindy have been like family. They have been there for birthdays, when my husband proposed to me, and they hosted our rowdy rehearsal dinner.\r \r Thanks Shogun! Pros: Great food, friendly staf Cons: A long wait on busy nights. more

Horrible service avoid like the plague. 10/13/2008

This is my first review and this is why. \r I would never imagining writing a review for a restaurant but the service was so bad I thought I would tell somebody about it. \r \r The food was just ""alright"". I would not recommend this restaurant. Pros: At least we didn't choke. Cons: The worst service I have ever experienced. more

AVOID Every day of the week! 10/13/2008

An Owner with a Bad Temper For sure...and all of his lil' helpers too! We were a party of 6 Adults and 3 small children on a Sat night. We ordered meals and sushi rolls, and recvd. the WORST service ever. The Waitress had forgot to do drink refills, after she forgot to ask us what we wanted to drink, The orders came out wrong, and in backwards order...Meal before Soup...Soup before Salad..She said they were to busy for us in a nutshell! We couldn?t believe it. Then when we nicely asked if there was any % they could take off the bill due to the POOR service recvd. The Owner Guy FLIPPED out..asking us what part of our meal we didn't recv.? We tried telling him it wasn't that...it was the SERVICE that was HORRIBLE! He then started making all of these accusations in a loud manner, and became enraged! My Friend stood up and asked him to step away from the infant carrier. He then told us to get the F*** out of his restaurant and proceeded by calling us all Mother F*****$, so we did exactly that, and left. When Leaving we had the Elk Grove Police called on us for skipping out on the bill. The WHOLE experience was a NIGHTMARE; we paid the bill...and have sworn SHOGUN SUSHI off FOREVER, and would encourage you to do so also! Best Wishes~ Cons: Horrible Everything!!! more

The restaurant overview (coustomer for over 7 years) 8/4/2008

Reasons why you need to try this restaurant out.\r \r ""Lee"" the main cheif had over 15 years sushi experience...\r and the sushi rolls that he had created are very unique compare to many other different restaurant...\r \r The all you can eat sushi rolls are all fresh made base upon your order. \r All the fishs and ingredients are freshly prepared by the Chef.\r \r Unlike many other buffet is either premade or precut and are no different than a fast food restaurant\r (For example the all you can eat buffet, Fuji in Davis their raw fish (sashimi) are all precut, like presliced meat that Subway and Mc Donald uses. The chefs in Fuji just simply put it on top of the sushi or rolls.\r Most of the time sushi are all premade also)\r \r I am not trying to say that Fuji is not right to serve their food precut or premade.\r But here I just want to help Shogun sushi to clearifly their business model are not base on a mass production style. \r \r Shogun's bussiness model are more towards serving quality and unique sushi at a really affordable rate that allows customers to spend an expected amount of money but in the meanwhile also achieving a fantastic sushi experience.\r \r list of the sushi rolls that are very unique and is a must to try them if u plan to vist the restaurant,\r These sushi rolls are designed to cook in different ways very different than the cold tranditional way, \r \r Deep fried\r Rambo roll (deep fried giant roll /w cream chesse and 3 kinds of fish inside)\r \r Grill\r Henry Roll (sushi roll with grill salmon inside)\r \r Baked\r Bay scallop ( baked roll with scallop on top)\r Lion King ( baked roll with salmon on top)\r \r Furity \r Happy roll (toped with thin sliced lemon)\r \r Spicy lovers \r Spicy Suicide (roll topped with sliced jalapeno)\r \r Since everything are fresh made experienced Chef \r Lee and Mindy \r A little patience must be require \r The experience take about 90mins to 120 mins from begining to end\r If your order everythings at one time it will help to speed up the process\r Pros: diffent fresh made sushi from cold to hot, sweet to spicy Cons: It is a experience that can take up to 90 mins more

Avoid this sushi place and go somewhere else!!! 8/26/2007

I heard reviews from friends that this is comparable or better to fuji's in davis or some bay area sushi places. HECK NO!! Not even close!!\r \r This place has 1 waiter (who refills water to certain tables and forgets the other tables) and up to 2 chefs (who are soooo slow) for a saturday lunch which should be one of their busiest days of business. 1 chef is a waitress who goes around taking orders also, while there is 1 full time chef.\r \r I went on a saturday afternoon and the place was half full (9 tables occupied) and it took 2 hours to get 10 rolls. That is right, 2 hours!!! It took more than 45 minutes to get the first roll. They didn't want to give us the last two rolls because they thought we were full and weren't going to finish it. What?!? There are 4 extremely hungry guys waiting for their food. We ordered it and we will pay the 1 dollar fee for EACH piece left over (which is ridiculous) if we were full. I was hoping to get full by drinking water to fill our stomachs, but we only got one glass for 2 hours.\r \r I watched the other tables get impatient and gave up on ordering like us. Don't be like us, just stay away!\r \r The business should go out of business for charging a large amount of money ($14) for ""buffet"". The definition for ""buffet"" is ""all-you-can-eat-until your-stomach-gets-full"", not ""give-them-a-little-and hope-they-run-out-of- time-and have-to-go-before-they-get-full"". This is false advertising.\r \r The slices of fish on top or inside the rolls were SO SMALL you can see through it!! The pieces were so paper thin that you can't even call it fish.\r \r The service was horrible and the food was just ""decent"" if that. I would definitely drive to fuji's than eat here again. In fact, I would eat ANYWHERE but here.\r \r EVERYONE STAY AWAY!!!!! If only there were negative stars... Cons: long wait for food, worst service, thin slices of sushi more
