Shiro Redux 10/21/2006

Sorry to say that I must take back the praise that I've previously heaped on Shiro Of Japan. On 10/7/06, the atmosphere was less welcoming than that of a soup kitchen. Our waitress must've been an ex-marine because she barked at our tables patrons like a drill Sargent(but even drill Sargents are friendlier). Her goal seemed to be for us to choke down our food as quickly as possible to vacate our hibachi table for the next group. Speaking of the food, all hibachi which included Steak& Chicken, Steak& Shrimp, Sea Bass, and Filet Mignon were acceptable this time but not delectable. The chef had to be restrained from being heavyhanded with the butter on the Sea Bass, otherwise, he was OK. Shiro claims to have the best sushi on Long Island. Be forewarned, the Salmon Sashimi looked so unappetizing that my mom was afraid to taste it. The waitress refused to take it back and called the manager, who was helpful and told my mom to try something else. However once burned, twice shy. If you want hibachi with good and accommodating service, try Gasho of Japan near Roosevelt Field or Benihana. For sushi, go to Negahama in Long Beach but stay away from Shiro. more

One of the best Japenese Restaurants on LI 9/1/2006

At Shiro of Japan, a variety of taste sensations are offered. Their classic hibachi menu won't dissapoint. To start off, mellow Japanese Onion Soup or Miso Soup(additional .50)laden with cubes of tofu wet ones appetite for things to come. Next up, a pedestrian salad is saved from blandness by a thick, tangy miso ginger dressing. If you ordered sushi as an addition or meal, you are in for a treat. Beyond fresh salmon sashimi had a satiny sheen and buttery texture. Squid, salmon skin Rolls, and salmon roe sampled bursted with flavor and melted in ones mouth. All hibachi diners are treated to a sizzling shrimp appetizer and pyrotechnic show. If you are afraid of the trick where the grill is on fire, move back a foot. Your hibachi choices include steak, chicken, shrimp, lobster, fresh fish and various combinations. All are prepared in a teriyaki marinade, spices, and a touch of butter(steak only) to lock in the flavor.A combination of zucchini, mushrooms, and onions along with bean sprouts or noodles are served on the side. If you have stomach space, have ice cream or sorbet for dessert, if not,sip some complimentary green tea.FYI weight watchers, hibachi here is prepared with minimal salt and butter due to good quality of the meats, so feel free to splurge. Service here is fine and extremely friendly. If you don't know, hibachi dining is communal so you may meet people while dining, Shiro has an atmosphere similar to a japanese tea house. Prices are a good value for what you get here. I suggest reservations for dining here so call (516)997-4770 to make a reservation. more
